We went into the Glass House visitors center, and we paid $4 for a parking pass that lets you park all day in the municipal parking lot a block away. We took the 2-hour tour. I thought it was too long, but it ended up being ok, you first go on a short van ride to the property. The guide was really knowledgeable about the property. If you're like me and have medical issues they will let you sit on a golf cart for the tour. It's a lot of walking and there are not that many places to sit.

My family did the glasshouse tour at 11:15 on Friday. It was just three of us at that time, so it became a private tour for just my family. The whole 2 hour tour was amazing and very inspiring. I highly recommend the glasshouse tour to anyone who visit New Canaan, CT.

This extraordinary house and grounds designed by Philip Johnson are a must-see for fans of mid-century architecture. Our guide, Katherine, did a terrific job relating the history of Johnson and his work. We splurged on the two-hour tour, which included The Glass House, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, outdoor sculpture, and a small structure just inside the gate that showcases temporary installations. We felt it was well worth the $50 ticket price!
Note that there is no parking on the grounds...leave your car in a municipal lot in New Canaan, walk to the Visitor Center, and you will catch the shuttle there.
I wouldn't recommend going on a very hot day, as the guide mentioned some buildings are too uncomfortable to go inside.

The tour lady Katherine is so knowledgeable and sweet. However, the tour itself in a heavily rainy cold day with a no refund policy was unfair and poorly enjoyable. I believe this should definitely be an option for your guest! We buy the tickets in advanced and it should def be if weather permits or we should have the option. Theres a lot of walking, you will get soaked. No umbrella, capes, nothing is provided by them. Sorry, $189 for 3 people for this was not worth it

The Philip Johnson Glass House is essentially at a secret location on Thomas Ridge Road. The tours shuttle you up from The Glass House pick up on Elm Street.

This is an extraordinary excursion for any lover of minimalist architecture, being surrounded by the beauty of nature, and design that is so aligned with function it is hard to believe possible. Philip Johnson really did create one of the wonders of the universe in this, his beloved, home. Our docent Marylou was clearly an enthusiastic admirer and she had a depth of knowledge that deepened our experience greatly.
The very next morning I found myself moving around furniture and paring down decorative touches in my home. Nice influence this man continues to make.

We bought our timed tickets online, ($45 for 2 seniors) and drove directly to the site. Fortunately we were permitted to enter early showing our receipt at the 1995 "Da Monsta" entry building with no right angles. After inspecting the huge entry gate with its counterweighted white ship’s mast, we walked the curving lane down to the 1949 home with its 1954 pool. We knew about this architectural masterpiece but did not know of the other functional and contrasting structures; the 1949 988 sq. ft. Brick Guest House, the 1965 3778 sq. ft. underground Painting Gallery, the 1970 3650 sq. ft. Sculpture Gallery with a skylight roof and his 1980 384 sq. ft. Library. Plantings of white pines, rows of maple trees and a sculptured pond accent this previous 49 acre former dairy farm with its stacked stone walls intact. Excellent docents compliment the educational visit.
We then drove 2 miles into New Canaan to visit the Johnson Design Store with its wall of photos and videos of the overall project.

This fantastic architectural beauty by architect Philip Johnson is absolutely worth a visit, especially on a sunny day when you can admire how the sun filters through the glass. You need to buy tickets in advance and can only walk around outside (they're not letting anyone inside the House yet due to COVID-19 restrictions), but with 49 acres, there's still plenty to see, including outdoor sculptures and other buildings, ponds, and nature's floral beauty. It's a serene, creative way to spend a day. Definitely bring good walking shoes, as the ground isn't always flat. Staff were very helpful about how to best enjoy the property.

With C19 visitors are limited to the grounds but the upside is that you can freely roam the 49 acres. The property is filled with ups and downs, texture contrasts, beautiful trees and interesting sight lines. Not being able to go inside the house was somewhat disappointing but given that all walls are glass it's almost like being inside. Guides are positioned around the property to give directions and answer questions. Terri was very knowledgeable and helpful.A great way to spend an hour.
