I went for the books, but was just as inspired by the architecture. There are a ton of obviously really old books, which were really nice to look at, although I would have loved to look at them more closely. The translucent marble that the place is built with was a fantastic surprise, though! Some light shines through, so it looks different depending on how much light is shining through and apparently looks even more beautiful if it has been raining and it’s wet. It almost made me wish for rain while we were here.

As for you, I would certainly stop in and walk over the floors for the rare box. They had nice displays and let you see some overall definitely worth the 30 minutes.

What I really want to do is get into that enclosed box with all the rare books! Failing that, browsing the displays ranging from the historic maps of New Haven on the outside windows to the rotating exhibits (when I went there was a very complete Frederick Douglass exhibit) to the traditional displays (Gutenberg bible, Audubon books, Declaration of Independence broadsheet).
One thing I loved was their take on "exit through the gift shop." There was a table with various items ... and it was free! Take a copy of the Declaration of Independence, take a pamphlet about Frederick Douglass, take a pin. Really expresses the concept of freedom of information in a library!

We loved visiting the Beinecke Rare Books library! So interesting to see how they preserve all of these rare manuscripts. They have a Gutenberg Bible on display here.

This library is SO special to visit. It’s like witnessing all of human kinds history in books & rare texts - all safely saved in one location. You feel like you are witnessing all of humans history in one location. The Beinecke Library hosts some of the rarest books on Earth, stored safely in an air tight glass structure & locked away in an environment that’s made to preserve them for humanity to treasure.
It’s free to enter. Upon entering, you are blown away by just how MANY books live here. Photos online don’t do it justice. The glass vault goes for many floors & has thousands upon thousands of historic books. You can walk around inside & view them from the outside.
It felt like viewing all of human kinds most precious books & manuscripts all in one spot & felt really magical. It felt special to witness such a rare treasure trove of human knowledge from hundreds of years ago. The outside of the library is stunning & deserves to be admired from the outside as well as the inside.

What a pleasant, peaceful place to celebrate books. The security staff at the desk were really helpful and welcoming. The exhibits (beyond the Gutenberg bible!) were so well done - re Fredrick Douglas when we were there. Would recommend!

The library is one of a kind and a must visit while in New Haven. Striking display of five floors encased in glass and lots of exhibits as well which perhaps are themed and changed periodically

The feeling that the stone used on the walls transmits light is extraordinary. When combined with the books, an indescribable visual feast is observed.

Really worth a look inside this building to see all the rate manuscripts and books from floor to ceiling. The architecture of the building and the ingenious approach to keeping the books safe from light damage is worth reading about

As an architecture enthusiast, I found this Mid-Century Modern building as stunning as I had seen in photos, both inside and out!! The exterior of Vermont marble, granite, bronze, and glass is innovative and has stood the test of time 60 years later. And inside the glass tower of books--the stacks holding the University's rare books and literary manuscripts collection is amazing!! Be sure to go up to the mezzanine and walk all the way around. And don't forget to take in whatever exhibition is on display on the ground and mezzanine levels. There is always something on exhibit that will pique your interest!

Is the tour for the inside of the library only available on Saturday? Or is it available on other days as well? Do we go to the visitor center for the tour or is the tour given separately by the library?

If you want to visit there is call 203-432-2300, that is the Yale visitor information center. They can provide you the best information to visiting the library. The group tour is Saturday at 130 pm, but you can go in and walk around on your own
