The Farmington/West Hartford area does not lack for spectacular places to walk. The good thing about Reservoir #6 is that it has something for everyone – – the full 3.8 mile loop around the water is both scenic as well as fairly level for the majority of the walk; the non-paved roadway portion has a few ups and downs for those liking variety but nothing too taxing or strenuous.
The part I like about it is that the major trail abuts a reported Revolutionary War campsite which was converted to a military hospital after the fighting; you can see these areas on the map however there are no dedicated or marked trails to the site, you need to step off trail to investigate. As a major history buff, I am a little disappointed that the importance of the area isn’t celebrated as much as it should be. The only visible remnants of the campsite are ruins of prior fireplaces – – the coordinates to find the exact spot are located online, on the town site so if you are packing a smart phone, you can easily find it using the maps. The stationary map at the entrance of the park also indicates that there is a memorial to the hospital somewhere in the woods but I must confess, I was unable to find it.
Dog walkers rejoice! Our furred companions are welcome on leash
Parking is limited on the same side of route 44 at number six but there is another lot across the busy thoroughfare for additional trails down to the other reservoirs. Route 44 is a busy road, and on the down slope, cars cruise by at amazing speeds— be sure to step lively if you attempt to cross.

We go here frequently with our dogs. The loops around the reservoir is a mostly flat 3.5- 4 mile and an easy walk. Yo I an also access the Metacomet and alternate Metacomet trails from here.

The MDC water commission allows people to hike its paved roads and hiking trails. Biking is limited to a few roads.
In most areas you can't hear traffic sounds. Challenging hiking trails lead to the famous Hublien tower.
Open during daylight hours with ample free parking.

Reservoir #6 is a beautiful spot for a walk or run. The perimeter is almost 4 miles around and is almost completely flat. It gives you a sense of getting away from it all as it is situated on Avon Mountain where there is relatively little development and a big corridor of woods. You can also extend your walk on the Metacomet trail which is marked by blue blazes and cuts off on the north side of the reservoir. The trail goes up to Hublein Tower where there are excellent views of Farmington Valley.

Twain said golf was a good walk, spoiled. A walk in the reservoir is never ruined. It is peaceful, tranquil and energizing. No matter the season there is always a surprise from nature and after 3 miles you feel renewed and refreshed. A true gem.

We loved walking Reservoir 6 but after encountering a large bear we decided not to return. We fully realize this area is part of their habitat. We would prefer not to impose. The grounds are beautiful, the wooded areas are dense and we would do a 3.8 mile power walk around the area. Usually busy at peak times, a lot of dogs being walked, many joggers and a lot of movement. Foxes and snakes can be seen on most visits. The MDC patrols the main roadways but bring a cell phone. They can't be everywhere and there's plenty of areas they are never seen.
Best bet: Go during busy times to have the extra security of people being around you.
