I took 40 Canadians for a visit to the park and later lunch at Leonard’s pub ….Toss Gibbons brought to life a spectacular story for the Canadians …phenomenal story teller …the park itself and its setting are beautiful …our Canadians , who earlier in the week had visited the Titanic museum in Cobh all agreed this was a much more moving compelling experience…I thank Mary Rowland for helping put it together …wonderful afternoon

This is such a discovery! Make it your point to come here and take your time. Also visit the nearby church on the corner in Lahardane, on the main street like this memorial. The church houses an amazing stained glass window with a scene from the sinking of the Titanic.

It was from this village, with Nephin mountain hovering in the distance, that the group known as the Addergoole Fourteen, started out to make the long journey south, across Ireland to Cobh, in Co Cork, to board the RMS Titanic, on spring morning in 1912. “Ireland’s Titanic village” is now an essential stopping place for tourists who are keen to learn more about the stories of locals on board the ship, now memorialized in this lovely memorial park.

The most striking piece of sculpture is the Titanic bow and two bronze statues signifying the departing emigrants by the sculptor Mark Rhodes, a Professor at University of Richmond.

The 4 bronze statues (three women and one man) are very well realised as they walk to the Titanic in the anticipation of a new and better life. In a corner of the park is the ‘Addergoole Hearth’, made from stones from each of the houses of those departed. A most evocative memorial of the tragic sinking of the Titanic back in 1912.

A fitting tribute to 14 locals who were on the Titanic that fateful night in 1912. We had the benefit of a local who was familiar with the site who gave us a tour both in English and in Irish. The 4 bronze statues in the middle represent both walking towards the ship in anticipation of a new start and a goodbye to Ireland. As I understand it, the plan is to add another sculpture every 10 years until all 14 victims are depicted.
The hearth was made from the stones of the house of one of the victims, which I also was impressed by.

The area around Lahardaun in County Mayo pooled their money to send some of its young people to America by boat. to earn money. Unfortunately, the ship was the Titanic. The survivors and those lost are memorialized in a lovely park and by brilliant stain glass windows in the town church. Annually, on the anniversary of the tragedy, they have a tasteful bell ringing ceremony. Not for everyone, but for those interested the Irish town that suffered the greatest loss loss with the sinking of the ship. Food and bathroom available at Murphy's Bar and Funeral Director, a short walk from the monument and next to the church. The publican was most personable, a bonus.
