This little park has great potential, however, the water quality has become so poor that the only visibility is directly over the spring itself. It’s very sad to see how murky this tidal River/spring has become.
The boat traffic that passes the swimming area is constant. Private Charters and Manatee tour boats seem to make up the bulk of the traffic.
No doubt, the rainwater runoff from all the homes, lawns, driveways and roads around it contribute to the pollution that is killing this river. I would imagine that all the flooding from last year, likely added to the water quality problems as the water receded back into the river, taking pollutants from homes, roads and yards with it.
We go there often, and it is becoming more and more common to see trash in the sand and in the water. One morning we even found a dirty diaper left in the sand. Very sad. Some people just leave their trash behind! Possibly because the trash cans are frequently overflowing?
The park also has rules that people ignore, such as no smoking, pets, or loud music.
The bathrooms are pretty rough looking and there are often unsupervised kids running around.
On our last visit, a few days ago, there was a young teenager smashing rocks on the sea wall and throwing rocks into the water, in the swimming area. Later, he was seen hanging, like a monkey, from the flag holder on one of the light poles. Everyone was surprised it didn’t break!
Not trying to discourage anyone from visiting, because it is a pretty park, but I think it’s fair to give an accurate review.
Once in a while there are manatees swimming through the area, and that can be fun, but the water is so murky that they can pass by you within just a few feet and you would never know they were there.
A couple weeks ago I watched a boatload of tourists corner a manatee against the dock area, across from the swimming area, and watch it for probably 10 minutes. The guide should have had the people back off but she didn’t. I felt bad for the manatee, who had nowhere to turn, to avoid the crowd.
I feel like there should be some changes made to save this river and better protect the manatees.
Until the water quality recovers, I wouldn’t pay a dollar to go swimming with manatees in this area, as most of the time, you can barely see them in the gloom. 😔

Great little beach. Manatees swam right up to us. Sometimes the County will show movies at night. Parking can be a problem. No pets allowed.

Very cool place. Seen several manatees, clean clear water, cool play area for the kids to play on. Nice sand also for kids to play with. It wasn’t too crowded when we were there. People snorkeling and swimming, I would check it out if in the area.

Incredibly clear water, a beautiful place. Two manatees swam through the water for us. Almost up close! An unforgettable experience!

Dropped by to take a look around. Ended up having a great manatee encounter! My granddaughter and I saw "footprints" (manatees tail swirls in the water) and we quickly got our masks and snorkels and went out. The manatee swam right up to us and interacted with us. We didn't have wetsuits so it was pretty cold but well worth it! Great!

Didn't see the sign. Got a $50 ticket. Many people out of town fell into the trap. This is an intentional scheme. Don't go Don't go. A terrible place

I live in Ocala Fl. I was told about Hunter Spgs so I drove down there with my Grandson. I pulled in just to check it out. We walked down to the waters edge. Went back to the car to leave and Found a $50 parking violation on my windshield. Told Park Ranger and he said Sorry. I did not see the parking pay sign until after the fact. Wont go their again.

Cozy place, very small. Due to the storm in September 2023, the water is cloudy and not very clear! But nice with a cool dip. It costs $5 to park for a day.

DO NOT EVER GO HERE. Apparently it is pay to park... but the signage is severely lacking. For one hour at a tiny spring... $50 ticket... this is either an intentional scheme against the tax payer or INCOMPETENCE of park operation.

We stopped for a picnic after kayaking all morning at another area. We completely missed the small sign entering the park saying that they have paid parking. It was a busy place with lots of cars coming and going. The 2 pay kiosks are not obvious unless you park near one. A 30 minute stay - normally $5 for all day parking - turned into a $50 fine. Crystal River seems to value the money rather than a friendly welcome to out of town tourists. A park ranger (who said he didn't write the ticket) told me the city will not waive any parking tickets. The Hunter Spring itself was overrun with power boats, paddle boards, and kayaks. We used a picnic table under a tree and then left, at which time I noted the paper ticket on my windshield. Definitely will be more careful next time we venture anywhere near Crystal River. At least they do have public restrooms.

If I just want to rent a kayak (without guided tour) to visit the springs, should I make a reservation or is there enough capacity?
Also, do they provide lockers? If no, where to leave your belongings while on the trip?

Do you have to get there early to get in? If the park opens at 8am, is there usually a long line to get in like some of the other springs?

I would love to swim with the manatees. Are there hotels near by? I live in MN. and am seeking guidance and direction. Thank you

We rented a house through Airbnb, but I did see many hotels in the area.

There was no sign when we were there. There were numerous swimmers and classes (scuba and snorkeling). We snorkelers for quite some time.

I saw trailers parked there set up for kayaks, but you have to get there very early to get space. The parking area is small.
