Great wilderness camping, but encountered a few unpleasant drawbacks

nice secluded trail
Trails were well-marked and there were several covered benches for a break from the sun. The Jennings trail (our starting point) was wooded and serene, encased in pines. The North Loop to which it led was fully exposed with no natural cover (just the shelters listed above). It's quite wide and easy to trek on - but be cautious of the many ruts left from wild pigs.

This trail was a great place to take our dog off leash as we only encountered a few others in nearly 6 miles of trekking.

Need trail markers!
A lovely environment and large...but needs trail markers and some tending to those who would visit...including where the mud holes might impede or make totally impossible where people might want to walk...we were on a very long hike and had to turn totally around because we couldn't get through...would've liked some signage about that before attempting the walk!
Not understanding why more care isn't given to marking trails and education for all who might want to enjoy these wonderful environments! The more we all are aware, the more we will all care for the environments and wildlife!

Not good
Very boring. A dirt road goes through but you won't see much wildlife. No envelopes to pay the fee so you have to pay online. Except we couldn't get cell service so you pretty much have to pay before you go. There is another entrance at the end of the road but it was closed. Very little in the way of trails or parking. No parking on the road. Could be a great recreation area if they made just a small effort. It is a state forest vs. a state park but other than some camping pretty much nothing to do here. sad.

The Area was apparently closed due either to hunting season or Covid. In any event we didn’t see a Ranger Station sign so proceeded down the only road in the Forest. There were small parking areas along the way without any indication why they were there. At the end of the road was a non descriptive parking area but no real indication or signs about what to do. We parked and saw a sign that said Jennings Trail. It was the only adventure available that we saw. The trail was interesting since it meandered through a replanted maze of pines that challenged you to followed the marked trail. I think that visiting the house to the left after entering may have provided a clue.

Nice forest trails to explore.
We came here at the end of the wet season and some trails we still had to avoid due to flooding. You enter through the unmanned gate on long forest road. They want you to pay a small fee of $1.80 on line which is not easy with practically no WiFi or phone service in most of the forest.
We first went to the ranger station to see if we can get hiking trails map but it was closed likely due to COVID adjustments.
There are small soft grassy parking spots at the trail heads along the main road.
We liked hiking Jennings trail. It leads through the planted pine forest with encroaching low palm plants. The contrasting colors and soft carpet of long needles are really great. We have seen the signs of presence of wild boars or pigs intensely digging in many places along the way. They can be aggressive so it might be smart to have a walking stick if hiking solo.
The forest road ends up at the larger parking area. You have to turn around and go back to leave the park.
It is an OK location for some picnicking but not a prime one.

solitude and wildlife found here
This is NOT Myakka State Park, but it is Myakka State Forest.

There are far too few places like this left in Florida. It was the best part of our recent camping trip to southwest FL. I wish we would have spent more time here. I'm hesitant to say too much about our experiences, but if you are a solitude seeking, able bodied, and self-sufficient camper who loves nature and associated outdoor activities, you will like it here.

No maps, crappy signs, didn’t say much at all!

We were so disappointed with this park, no maps nothing, and had to drive to the end of the road just to turn around and nothing at the end of the road.

Alligators and a nice boardwalk
We started off with the alligators along the river which we could see clearly from the bridge. Four of them where close, other lay further back. It fluctuates every day and hour how many you can spot. On the way towards the boardwalk there where only 2. When we were on our way back there were 4.
The boardwalk is really wonderful. And from the tower you can look a long way across the forest. There were vultures in the sky souring by which was cool to.
Further along there’s another walk (little loop) were there were alligators as well as a lot of birds. There’s a lot to see for $6 it is really worth it!

Okay for a picnic!
There is a nice picnic area immediately to your right with several private dining areas. Overall there is not much to do here. Took a walking trail but not very scenic. There may be more to do in this area which I didn't discover.

Parkland Adventure
There are so many fun, interesting and learning experiences waiting at the park . Great spot for either a quick day trip or overnight camping. A bird walk with posted descriptions of the feathered residents takes you out into the savanna and close to rivers edge to get close to all the action. Some of the more reptilian species can be found on various shorelines for close views .A short walk through the forest brings you to a tree canopy tower that lends a 360 view of miles of space with birds flying above the treetops. Take a guided boat ride on the river to get a closer view of alligators and learn more about the park. Great restaurant fare -even gator nuggets , gift shop with interesting souvenirs, lots of picnic sites and kayak rentals. Beautiful camp grounds with friendly neighbours and volunteer staff . There are weekly special events to take advantage of so check the park postings ahead of time to plan better. Bring bikes for a lovely , leisurely cycle .The established forest provides a gorgeous overhead canopy to keep things cool. Entrance fee low .Highly recommended !
