Yep, showed up on super windy rainy day. Followed my GPS here, super confusing wetland seemingly crossed with a parking lot, and no trespassing signs.

Screw it, let’s do it. Got the bikes and rode on narrow manmade paths, surrounded by sketchy manmadish swamps. Looked like alligator soup

Did one ride pretty quickly, couple, confusing turns, maybe it took eight minutes. Didn’t see any, my back to the car.

Son really wanted to see, so we ride another time, and bumped into a fat one, eating something right where we had just passed. He gave us the very exciting alligator eating something show, followed up by full eye contact.

Super creepy feel like there were millions in the water, humans on the menu, and saw a couple people walking with their kids?

It was absolutely 1000% worth it. Nothing better than being on a tiny strip of land, water on both sides, and the potential for a big alligator, two big alligators, to block your way out of there.

We wanted to enter to go birding but it appears to be under construction. Hours have changed. No notice as to when it will be open again. It is gated and closed.

Awesome scenery well worth taking the time to visit and walk around for a couple of hours. Too bad they no longer allow cars to drive around the park because it's too far for seniors to walk the whole area. But there is plenty of wildlife and beautiful wetlands to admire. Highly recommend for people who loves natural Florida.

Beautiful area. We saw a huge gator and lots of birds although being blustery today only the hawks were actually in the air. No shade however lots of benches are available to rest and soak in the views.

Free nature area, quite small, not worth a long drive but nice if you are nearby. It is flat and a bit marshy but nice to visit.

I've visited the wetlands numerous times since 2015. The berm roads, once open to vehicles, it is now closed to vehicular traffic. Walking and bicycles are allowed.

I visit this location at least once a year and, to this day, I have no idea what’s going on with the gates. Open sometimes, closed sometimes. On this visit (closed), they have a sign that says it’s due to wet roads. As it’s the end of Florida’s dry season, I was immediately skeptical of this excuse. As suspected, the roads were completely dry and in great shape. One might think that the “keeper” was lazy and couldn’t manage to pull himself out of bed to get here and open up. Anyway, what’s up with this? If you are going to manage this location, then manage it. Either open it for vehicles or keep the gate closed so we have to walk. Walking is the order of the day at Orlando Wetlands and Sweetwater Wetlands in Gainesville (both treat reclaimed water similar to this location) and both operate smoothly. Although I do like the idea of driving through this area (think Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive or Merritt Island NWR, not knowing what to expect is nothing but annoying.

Although the roads were closed we still enjoyed some short hikes. Saw several birds and gators, including one gator (VERY) close to some birds! Some observation towers. Very pretty wetlands. A nice place well done for viewing of some wild life. And up close! Higkly recommend.

Very rarely do you not see a gator. Just wanted to post website's info on gators since a lot of people posting opinions. It is safer than it sounds. There is so much to see. We like walking it since you can do more trails that are closed to cars.

Alligator Safety while visiting the Viera Wetlands:

If you have visited the Viera Wetlands then chances are you have probably spotted alligators in some capacity; either basking in the sun along the banks of the berm roads or slowly creeping through the top of the water column. This is perfectly normal and very common in most freshwater and brackish waterways in Florida. Alligators are generally shy and often avoid human contact and while it is fascinating to observe these creatures, it is of paramount importance to note a few safety guidelines and rules when you come across them in the wetlands or anywhere else, for that matter.

For some, it may be tempting to see how close they can get to an alligator basking in the sun, as alligators sometimes seem like statues that don’t move. As visitors to the Wetlands, Never attempt to approach these animals. You may view them and take pictures from a safe distance and if they happen to be in the middle of your walking path, please turn around and go the other way. It is important to note that feeding or harassment of these animals is illegal and you will be reported and possibly prosecuted if caught doing either. Never attempt to feed an alligator anything. In addition to being illegal, feeding alligators (no matter the size) makes them associate humans with food. Alligators that are fed will often become emboldened to approach people in hopes of being fed. Not only is this dangerous to humans, but it is dangerous to the alligator because when they show no fear of humans or actively approach people, they are considered a threat and may be killed. A fed alligator is a dead alligator.  No matter the size of the alligator or how experienced you think you are with alligators, never attempt to approach or feed them.

Risk of alligator attacks are higher during mating and nesting season from about April, when they begin mating through late June-July when females build nests and lay eggs. You should be especially cautious and aware of your surroundings during this time, when visiting the wetlands. Stay up on the berm roads and never walk down the bank to the water’s edge even if you don’t see any obvious signs of alligators in the area. Thick vegetation can easily disguise a resting alligator or an alligator nesting site. It is important to note, however, that you should never approach alligators, regardless of the time of year.

Some other important considerations to keep in mind when dealing with alligators at the Viera Wetlands include keeping a close eye on small children and keeping them away from the water’s edge and keeping dogs on short leashes and away from the water’s edge. It is worth noting that the odds of being attacked by an alligator are less than your odds of being struck by lightning in Florida. With that being said, precautions should not be ignored and keeping a safe distance will lessen your odds significantly of any serious injury to you or others. It will also protect you from any legal recourse involving harassment or feeding of wildlife.

If you should come across any nuisance alligators, alligators that seem aggressive towards or approach humans, you should contact the wastewater treatment staff, 321-255-4331 or contact Natural Resources, 321-633-2016. A qualified alligator removal contractor will trap and remove the animal if it is deemed necessary. Never attempt to remove or handle an alligator on your own.
