I have been here many times and sometimes you see a lot of birds and possibly gators . Sometimes you don't see much at all or everything is really far away . It costs 10$ to drive on the Black Point Drive. I don't know why some people are saying it's free because it's not unless they just drove on by the pay station ( honor system) . You can drive the roads on the other side to the right if your coming from the bridge side and they are free . There are usually birds there .

Simply a great place to go and it's free. This nature reserve is just a few miles from the launch pads at Merritt Island and NASA, so closed when a launch is due. It's a 8 mile slow drive through the backwaters of NASA. lots of wildlife to see including some huge aligators, so be careful if you leave the car. I saw one gator crossing over the road as I drove. If you like wildlife and especially birds then this is well worthwhile. Some sites say a small fee is charged for cars, but I have visited over 10 times and never been charged.

Very beautiful park especially when interested in wildlife. Has some nice viewing platforms. Take your time to look around as birds are not easily seen.

My wife and I along with our 11-year old twin girls recently had an opportunity to take in Black Point Wildlife Drive during a recent trip to the Space Coast. That said, here was our takeaway.
ARRIVAL: Crossing over from Titusville, the drive to Black Point on Merritt Island is both picturesque and beautiful. You can feel yourself leaving civilization behind the further into the island you go, and there’s an almost primordial feel as you venture further away from the mainland. Crossing the bridge to the park entrance is about a 5 minute drive, where you’ll find a welcome billboard and a mailbox slot to deposit donations ($10 per car is suggested). Tip: Bring cash, envelopes are provided. On this particular day we went on a Tuesday afternoon, so it was very quiet (maybe only 5-6 other cars witnessed on the whole drive through. There are no washroom facilities at the park entrance, but rather some located toward the park exit so keep that in mind.
THE DRIVE: From end to end, we allotted ourselves about 30-40 minutes, but pace is very much dictated on your own terms (some seemed to zip through while others lingered for a lot longer). We went at a fairly slow, even pace to come up with that final time allotment. There are a couple designated stops where we saw people getting out and having a look around, but this is predominantly a drive-thru park. The drive itself is incredible, with lots of diverse wildlife and not a trace of civilization to the naked eye. We marveled at the array of birds and had several alligator sightings throughout as our girls watched with eyes wide open. There’s certainly a Jurassic park-esque feel to it at times, likening it to a place where the Everglades would meet the Australian outback. Lots of photo ops throughout, and there’s a serenity here that contrasts starkly with the hustle and bustle of the mainland. You’d never imagine the Kennedy Space Center was so close by!
VALUE: For the cost of a $10.00 donation that goes towards the upkeep of the park, this is a total win for all those looking for an affordable daytime activity that allows one to take in a different perspective of Florida, away from the tourist hordes. Black Point Wildlife Drive might not be as well known as some of the other local area attractions, but provides as a trip off the beaten path, away from the cacophony of noise, with sounds of nature providing the soundtrack for the drive. A definite win, not to mention being incredibly atmospheric.
THE BOTTOM LINE: A guidebook recommended Black Point Wildlife drive to us, and we were glad to find this hidden gem. A budget friendly attraction that will get you up close and personal with nature, without having to leave the comfort of your air conditioned vehicle. Five stars, a beautiful costal central Florida attraction.

We stopped at the Visitor’s Center and learned about this scenic drive so decided to do it. For several miles, we saw nothing until a car ahead of us was stopped and we saw what they were looking at- an alligator was laying along the side of the road. Further on we saw another gator and he headed for the bushes when we tried for a picture. The only other wildlife we saw was a heron or crane in the swamp but it started raining and that might have kept others away. The drive is free so take your time and keep your eyes peeled on both sides.

The earlier the better for bird watching - although we have been midday and still saw great birds- just not as many.
Are there lots of pot holes? I have a mini van and plan to go and take the drive with some friends. Is it ok? Thanks in advance.

I did it in a mini van. wasn't all that bad. plus everyone goes really slow. shouldn't be a problem at all. don't remember many pot holes.

I would like to do is drive where does it begin and where does is it end how long will I need for the drive I'll be there in May is that a good month
As Fletchia comments above, the heat it full on in May. However, if the trip's purpose isn't for birding, there's still plenty to see. It's a great place to soak in natural Florida, and spot alligators basking in the sun.

Titusville is the nearest town and we stay at the cluster of hotels round the I95 (have tried Ramada which was OK, but have now stayed at Fairfield Inn & Suites twice)

you can fish in the vicinity - the Merritt Island Visitor Centre are particularly helpful we found - you can do an internet search for it and there is info on there about fishing and hunting etc
Can we visit this drive on a Sunday? The visitor center is closed
