We go there often. This review is for French composer Georges Bizet (1833-75) 'Carmen' on March 8th, 2024 - to celebrate the International Women's Day.
The opera house is ok, better than St. Petersburg's ... It situated near the Main Street, and cross street is their Selby public library. The house produced four operas each season, or at least in 2022-3 and 2023-4 two seasons.
The three floor opera house was opened in 1926. Architect was Roy A. Benjamin (1887-1963) who moved from Ocala to Jacksonville in 1902. Before, it was named Edwards Theatre for the first mayor of Sarasota – Arthur Britton Edwards, who envisioned it.
The mediterranean revival style theater has 1,119 seats. Although it had a major renovations in 2007-8, but the air conditioning system doesn’t work well tho.
Carmen is the 5th opera we've seen here. As usual, decently produced, with wonderful sopranos. It's a nearly full house, on this Friday. Many people, mostly women are dressed up. However, the audience is tough: talking, phone ringing, (the orchestra stopped), dropped phones, candy wrappers; two couples near us got up and left in the middle of the Act.

Whether a local or visitor to Downtown Sarasota, do take the very interesting Backstage Tour of the Opera House. Not only do you learn much about the current performers and the story behind the opera but the history and architecture of the building itself. Tour guides are lively and well learned on details.
THERESE, currently playing is superior!! A must see. The three main leads were excellent......and we were on the edge of our seats near the finale!!
A definite easy listening performance of a Massenet opera.

We saw Madame Butterfly and everything about the production was top notch. Outstanding orchestra and singers. Very well done and very enjoyable! Will be back for sure!

Sarasota Opera is a wonderful facility with just a terrific set of acoustics and a stage that is close enough to the audience to be intimate. Every performance we have seen has been very well produced and directed. The orchestra is talented and amazing, and the actors are all top-notch. We were at the opening of "The Secret Marriage" this past week and while the show is not one of the most well-known of operas, it was very enjoyable nevertheless. The Opera House is within walking distance of dozens of the nicest restaurants in the area, so taking in a pre-show dinner and a comfortable stroll to the show is absolutely a benefit of its location.

I have been attending RoSFest since 2012 starting out at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg PA. and the festival has always been a cut above the rest, what makes this festival special is it is held indoors for 3 day's and the is a nice break in between each performance. This gives the music fan time to eat and socialize with other attendees who have become family. In 2019 the festival moved to Sarasota to the Opera House. What a pleasant surprise. The music was just as amazing, all the usual attendees from Gettysburg showed up to show their continued support, the only thing that changed is the venue. While the Majestic Theater will always hold a special place in my heart, I believe the festival moving down south to the Sarasota Opera House was a big improvement. Great venue and world-class Art-Rock festival.

As Opera lovers, we were excited to return to the Sarasota Opera. This is a fully professional operation - terrific singers, beautiful old concert hall, full orchestra, full sets, etc. It follows the traditions by not updating the settings or costumes. The three operas that we heard this year were extremely well sung and done. This Operas company is a real winner.

We made our first visit for a Friday evening performance in March 2020. We were delighted by the lovely venue, the wonderful pit orchestra, the beautifully created sets, and the well executed performances by the singers. Our seats were excellent (AA 10 & 11) in the front row of the 1st mezzanine. One note is that they do not allow you to bring anything purchased from their two bars into the theater.
We will definitely return.

We always enjoy opera, but this season is particularly stellar at the Sarasota Opera. La Boheme and Romeo and Juliet were both outstanding and beautifully sung, staged and conducted. Elixir of Love is lighter opera and cute but equally as well done. It was amusing and got some chuckles versus the sad endings of the first two.
The opera house itself is stunning and with only an 1100 seat theater there are no bad seats. So enjoy a dinner out and a lovely evening at the opera.

If you love opera, definitely worth a visit. Seat a little over a thousand. No bad seats. The singers are young, but excellent. Nice to see the leads in La Boheme in the right age range! Definitely worth a trip!

All evening opera performances begin at 7:30 pm sharp. For most performances there will be no late seating. Latecomers will be seated at Selby Lobby—on the second floor of the Opera House, where they will be able to see a video and audio feed of the performance until the next late seating opportunity arises. I hope you enjoy the performance tonight!

I don't perceive the first row seats being too close to stage. That having been said, sitting on the first row is a matter of preference. There are some people who only want to sit in the first row, and some people, like me for instance, who prefer the back of the house, where there's a better "blend" between the sound of the orchestra and that of the voices. Being a small opera house though, there really isn't a bad seat in the house. I suggest trying different locations to find your "spot."

Hello - I work for Sarasota Opera and can answer your question. A good opera for a 14 year old would be "La boheme" which the opera company will be performing this fall (October 30th - November 17th). I would suggest looking it up on Wikipedia and reading through the synopsis prior to attending. YouTube is also a wonderful resource. It is a very familiar opera with beautiful music.
Another opera to consider would be our Youth Opera production of "Brundibar" this fall on November 14th. Our Youth Opera program has about 90 kids between the ages of 8 - 18 so if you were to come to that one, they would be watching kids their own age performing on stage. I hope these two suggestions help.
