Fantastic kayak experience. Got there before noon. Paid $45 and could keep the tandem kayak until 5pm. Free parking was available. Staff helped us launch and provided us with necessary equiptment. The water was amazingly clear and warm. We did not see a manatee that day, but would go again and have recommended it to many.

Rented two kayaks. Paid $100 cash at their request to have two tandem kayaks until 5. Was told we could go eat at the restaurant next door and continue our kayaking after as long as we tied up the kayaks up ourselves. At 4 this very rude old, gray haired, cranky, hard living, rough looking owner/employee (I think I heard someone call him Tim) came to the restaurant next door and took our kayaks and threw our bag onto the deck. We tried to stop him and told him we planned on going out after we ate and he was so rude saying we didn't have time to go out anymore (we had an hour before we needed to be back) and that he didn't want us being late, which I told him we wouldn't be but he didn't care. He took our kayaks anyway and at 4:23 we saw the guy at the bar ordering a drink. Apparently our kayaks were the last ones out and he wanted to close up early and start his Friday night drinking so we got shorted an hour that we paid for.. I guess waiting until 5 to start boozing it up was asking too much of Tim. So freaking annoying. Never coming here again and never paying cash again Usually rent at the top of the river but decided to give this place a try. One and done for us. By the way, we live in Tampa and visit Weeki Wachee often. Noticed the business is for sale since the owners are apparently divorcing. Maybe that's why they don't care about their customers. By the prior reviews it looks like the business went downhill when they lost the ability to drop people off at the top of the river. People now have to paddle upstream in the not so nice part of the river. Anyone would be crazy to buy this place now.

I called to ask the question of having a gift certificate extended. I understand they have expiration dates but it does not hinder the business in any way to extend a $40 gift certificate to help out a customer. Not only was the answer a quick no but the female who I talked to was very rude and condescending. I don't need "That's the way they all do it honey!" Very unprofessional and certainly would never give a gift certificate from them or patronize this business.

A lot to like here.
First its easy to find and they have their own large parking lot adjacent to where you launch from.
Great price, $35 for a day. You pay a lot more in other cities
Friendly staff to help you pay, launch and return
River is clear, just like you see in photos
A couple of small boats on the river, I saw nothing dangerous or concerning from the boats
Only downside was the current was running very strong at the time we launched. Research this and I am sure there are times when the current is less.
Of what we paddled one side of the river is pristine woodland, the other side is river houses/trailers.
There were a number of kayaks on the river too, but not overly crowded.
No fault fo Kayak Shack, just be aware and be prepared,

Top notch service!!! Back in February 2019 I went to weeki wachee for the first time! It was a last minute trip, but everything was sold out. We called the Kayak Shack and they were still able to reserve 2 kayaks for me - thank you for giving me the best birthday!
I recently stumbled upon their booklet from 2019, and it made me so excited that I will be back again this February for my birthday :)

What a wonderful place for kayaking on the weekend IF there were no motor boats. It started out peacefully on the quiet, clear waters of the WW River. Then the motor boats came cruising by and I nearly got run over by 3 boats, all at different times during my float.
It is way too crowded on the river on the weekends. This would be a perfect place, a wonderful place if the pontoons, motorboats and jet skis were prohibited from going on the river at the same time as kayakers. Sorry boaters, you are all insensitive punks running over kayakers! One boat almost even ran over a manatee with its motor on. Good thing I yelled and he pulled it up. This is how the manatees get hurt... jerks driving those boats.
I won't be returning on weekends. If I go back and there are boats continuing to run over me, I will never return and let everyone know about it through my posts.

We didn't realize how difficult it was to get a kayak in the park, but were happy the four of us (daughters in their early 20s) could do this together, calling in early for a reservation. We never did a spring kayak before and were intimidated by the need to paddle upstream. It turned out fine. It's 3 to 4 times slower to go upstream than downstream. There were some crowds and noisy people enjoying themselves. We were more interested in nature and enjoyed the clear cool water, fish and seeing 5 manatees including two pairs of mothers and their baby. Unforgettable. We didn't make it all the way to the top of the spring as we didn't know how long it would take to get back. We returned by 4 in spite of the 5 PM deadline, but we were all tired and happy. We brought a cooler with some drinks and snacks but should have included lunch. That's our fault.

Staff were VERY attentive, equipment all in great shape, and the river was beautiful! We saw many manatee in the "hospital bowl" half a mile up stream from the shack! There were several sand bar areas to stop and rest as we paddled upstream. Thank you for a wonderful experience!!

great place to get in and explore the beautiful spring! I was a bit nervous just putting our name in to reserve, but when we got there before our scheduled time, they had us down and enabled us to get in early. Everyone loved and commented on the kayak I was given. It was a beautiful color. I was surprised as how many people said something about it.
Also a plus is they are pet friendly!

This company is easy to access, right on the river, has a bathroom, gift shop and parking. Everyone was very friendly and the process was simple. We rented 4 single kayaks for the day and had a great time. We didn't see any manatee but that just gives us a reason to return!

We are thinking of hiring kayaks later this month with The Kayak Shack but are concerned about the paddle upstream to get to the head of the spring (before floating back down with the current). Please can you confirm how difficult the upstream stretch is, and how long this usually takes? Thank you!

My husband and I had never kayaked before and are not in the best of shape- the river is spring fed so the resistance is fairly low- it does vary at some points- but I think they told us it moves at 1 mile an hour- I am not sure of the distance you are referring to, but I believe we made it to the half way point in about 45 minutes? at a very casual pace. if the halfway point is the ice cream pontoon. Have fun-

I noticed that depending on the time of day the current is harder than other times. But it isn't too bad. When the current is strong it is hard to steer a bit. But the ride back is a breeze. Well worth it

Each model of kayak has a "recommended maximum" weight. A larger person may be more comfortable in a "sit in" model vs. the sit on models. The sit in model offers a lower center of gravity when compared to the “sit on” models. Depending on the person it may be easier to use a “sit on” model than to get into the "sit in" kayak. I know the Kayak Shack on the Weeki Wachee river has an excellent program, the employees assist you with the kayak at the Weeki Wachee park when they are launched. They also have a “kayak dock” that makes getting in or on and out or off the kayak easy. The individual renting the kayak will have to consider; their strength, sense of balance, agility, etc. when selecting the best kayak for them. Call the Kayak Shack (352) 610-4169 and they likely can add some information and help you select the right kayak.
