Worth a stop & the $6 charge (Georgia State Parks usually charge to defray tax burden). Considering these earthen mounds were abandoned some 500 years ago, they are well preserved. Mound A is as tall as a six-story building! Even the Cherokee in the 1700s & 1800s considered them historic from a prior society, giving you a sense of their history. While one smaller mound was completely excavated & rebuilt last century, less than 10% of the overall site has been. The lengthy defensive ditch & borrow pits are very evident. The attached museum has a nice display of materials & historical narrative.

I recommend starting in the (small) museum - the mounds are more impressive if you understand a little about them and the history of the area.

The mounds themselves are impressive and the grounds are very well maintained. Beyond the mounds is a river walk and nature trail. All of these are accompanied by information points with signs/diagrams.

If the weather is nice, you could easily spend 2 hours. More if you bring a picnic lunch - just be sure to clean up after yourselves.

I unfortunately picked a wrong day to go. They were having a field trip and I almost left without seeing it at all, but I waited til the kids had all gotten in entered the trails. I then went in and went through the museum, and then picked a trail that would get me the best overview of the site. They had three main mounds a couple smaller mounds. Three of them they have steps going to the top I didnt do that but I saw plenty of the kids doing so. They do have a fee for this site but I think its very worth it and if you do go sunscreen and a hat not a lot of shade on the trails. Also when you turn onto the road leading you back you will think you have mad a wrong turn cause its farm land all around but its in the middle of all that.

Interesting history of the Southeastern Indians settlers who later became the Creek and Cherokee tribes. Watch the movie so you get an idea of the context of the village.

We were stuck in traffic on I75 heading home from a TN trip and decided to visit the mounds to pass some time. Our 8 year old had so much fun and climbed all 3 mounds. The museum is small and perfect for all the information you need before heading out to the mounds. I recommend going during cooler months to fully enjoy the experience. The views from the top of the mounds are beautiful. Be aware, there is no shade. There is no relief from the sun until you head over to the river. The ranger on duty was very friendly and informative. There are picnic tables if you would like to pack a lunch. This is not an all day adventure, but you can take your time and enjoy it all at your leisure. There is a small fee to enter. $6 per adult and $4 for youth.

One teenager, 9-yr old, husband and myself.
We were on a day trip at Red Top Mountain State Park and decided to stop by this site. And it was great! Rich in history and beautiful river flowing by these awesome mounds. It is worth the trip! The fee was $21 total for the 4 of us.

Two adults with a young teen had a great time at this site. Beginning to end, we spent about 2.5 hours here.

When you first arrive, make sure to ask for the Junior Ranger booklet and instructions on the geocache that they have. We’ve had fun trying to collect all the JR pins with our daughter. The geocaching has been added more recently and does add an additional level of fun for our family.

We started with going through the small museum, to understand what we were about to visit. The video was quick and worth watching. Clues for the geocache were here.

Then we walked to the mounds. The weather was perfect for us, but I can imagine it would be baking in the summer. Huge fields of grass and wildflowers led up to the mounds. The stairs up the mounds were shorter than usual and winded us a little, but were well maintained. Lovely views from the larger mound.

The Etowah River was a nice spot to sit and fill out our Junior Ranger booklet & birdwatch. The nature trail started out lovely, and then just ended in piles of mulch. I’m choosing to blame Covid for the lack of maintenance. But it is still a short walk, so not a huge deal.

Overall, a lovely excursion that I would definitely recommend.

This historic site offers an interesting glimpse into Native Mississipean community and culture. There is a short movie ( although it stopped playing after 5 min and kept starting over while we were there) and small museum with historical timeline displays. We were able to climb the mounds and enjoyed a stroll on the nature trail. It was a nice way to spend an hour and a half.

The intro film was very informative. It told the facts of what happened to the southeastern Indians without being maudlin or apologetic. The mounds were interesting to climb up and look over the terrain. You could easily imagine a large village established there.

If you have any interest in history you will have an incredible time. We Loved seeing the amazing artifacts at the museum. It was also a short walk to see the mounds (it was hot outside) They offered a magnificent view of the area. There was a great little nature trail in the shade that went by the river and looped around the park. We had an excellent time and the young lady who worked there was a pleasure to talk to. It wasn't busy and we had a good time talking to her and asking her questions. Overall a great experience. I imagine Autumn would be the best time to visit due to the Georgia heat but we had an amazing time regardless.
