Mike was a great guide with interesting and relevant information and stories. A good variety of things to see, both expected and unexpected. Not a lot of time for hiking, of course, but a fun way to see the whole island in a day.

Exceptional tour. Mike was our guide and he was so informative and interesting. I highly recommend taking the tour to see sites off the beaten path and at the North end of the island. Mike ensured that we all comfortable and had several restroom breaks along the way. If you love history and nature this is a must do. The Plum Orchard House tour was worth the price of the tour. We packed a lunch and ate marshside watching the wild horses under the live oaks dripping in Spanish moss. This was a perfect day. If you are reading this, Mike, thank you for sharing your knowledge. You made things extra special.

Excellent tour with extremely engaging, well researched, and entertaining guide, Bill.
Clearly, the wildlife, the history of Cumberland Island and inspiring knowledge of its uniqueness and treasures is his passion. His joy and humor is contagious, making for a fun and highly informing day that is not to be missed.

From start to finish, Mike (our tour guide) was such an informative, professional and fun tour guide! His knowledge of the history of the island was incredible!!!! It is an awesome tour to take if you want to get the full history of the island. There was so much packed into the day and yet the time went very quickly. We would definitely do this again and would request that our guide to be Mike again!!!!!!

This is a fantastic tour for anyone wanting to visit many different areas of Cumberland Island and learn the history of the island. Our family of four (two kids ages 16 and 19) enjoyed hearing about the history of Cumberland Island and the people who inhabited it, including perhaps it’s most prominent owners, the Thomas and Lucy Carnegie family, kin to Andrew Carnegie. If staying for multiple days, we would recommend taking the tour on the first day of your visit to learn about the various mansions and the neat features across the island before taking more time to explore the island further on foot or by bicycle. Mike was a wonderful tour guide, and we enjoyed spending the day with him as we learned about Cumberland Island. He is very knowledgeable about the history and made the story of Cumberland Island very interesting and engaging. Our daughter is a second-year university student taking United States History, so it was neat for our kids to learn about the extravagant lifestyles of the wealthiest Americans during the Gilded Age. Mike encouraged us to ask questions and made the whole experience very enjoyable. He even was able to show us the ruins of the Dungeness which was a special surprise. To see and learn about many of Cumberland Island’s highlights, the Lands and Legacies tour is a great experience, and we can’t recommend it highly enough!

Mike was an excellent guide and provided tons of information during our trip. He was accommodating and helpful the entire day. It is clear he has a love for this place and was able to share it with us highly recommended

Our Land and Legacies tour of Cumberland Island GA took about 6 hours. Our tour guide, Mike, was a wealth or local knowledge and island history. He was very entertaining and could sure tell a story. It was a gorgeous blue sky day; quite cool for March and no mosquitoes or no-see-ums. We saw lots of wild horses, wood storks and even a random armadillo. It was a great overview of the island. We will definitely return.

Mike was an Excellent guide today! Loved the narrative of the island history, and we had no knowledge of previous details about Cumberland other than the wild horses! Not we know so much and Mike embellished with some marvelous info.

Bill Floyd was our guide, and he was TERRIFIC! Lots of history to learn surrounded by wild horses and armadillos. We were in the van longer than I expected, but there was a lot of scenery to enjoy while listening to Bill. The 45 min ferry ride to and from the island was relaxing.

Is there any opportunity to do any walking on this tour, or are you on the van most of the time? If we take the tour starting at 9:45 am and have a return ferry trip at 4:45 pm, will there be enough time at the end of the tour to walk to the Dungeoness ruins?

Your tour guy will take a survey when you get on the van. If the group as a whole agrees to have an 1/2 hour lunch at Plum Orchard (plenty of time) he will do everything he can to get you back to Dungeness. You will have about 20-30 minutes to see the ruins (plenty of time). He'll also do a quick trip around the ground of Dungeness and point out other buildings. You probably will not have time to see the eastern beaches, which was fine with us. We are planning a trip in the spring to explore the beaches which is doable from basecamp. The van tour is sooo worth every penny you spend. It's a bumpy ride...but we had a great time and Mike, our tour guide was a wealth of knowledge. Perhaps, you'll see Matilda at Plum Orchard... we did and believe we have a picture to prove it.

No. We didn't get to explore the beach at all. We as a group chose to cut our lunch break at Plum Orchard from and hour to 1/2 and hour so we would make it back to see Dungeness. But no way would we have had time to make it to the beach.

What a wonderful question! You are more then welcome to call the reservation office to schedule for the tour as well as the ferry tickets, the number is (877) 860-6787. Or if you wish to make them online yourself, go to Cumberland Island Ferry and when you are on the home screen scroll all the way down until you see a box that says "TOURS". When you click on that it will take you to a screen with all the information regarding our tour of the island. On the right side of the screen you will see a button that says "Book Now", once you press that it will give you a list of dates you can choose from. Make sure to also book the 9am ferry from St Marys and the 4:45 ferry from Cumberland! I hope this was helpful!

I think it depends on the 11 year old. If he or she enjoys history and museums then it might work. It's an all day tour with no option to depart early so also bear that in mind.

We have the Land and Legacies Tour available 7 days a week from March 1st through November 30th. Through the winter season we only run the tour Thursday through Monday. So to answer the question, yes we have the Land and Legacies Tour available in January just not on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Since the Dungeness ruins is not included in the 5-6 hour tour, will I have time to tour it independently afterwards?

Depending on what time the tour finishes determines whether or not if you have time to explore. It usually ends around 4-4:30pm and the boat departs Sea Camp at 4:45pm.
