Fascinating tour (20 stories underground!) of Dahlonega's gold mines and the brave miners who worked there. Tour guide was informative with a good sense of humor! A lot of steps and some slippery rock areas so wear sturdy shoes.

This was one of the BEST things we did while in North Georgia! The mine tour was terrific. My kids (16, 12, 9) loved it. If you have mobility issues, it may NOT be for you, though. There are lots of steps, ramps, uneven surfaces, and walking. It is wet. Do not wear nice shoes. It is nice and cold down deep in the mine, so on a hot summer day, it feels incredible. Our tour guide was so informative. We did pass another tour while in the narrowest part of the walkway. It was a t--i-g-h-t squeeze. My son was a bit scared while we were on the dark, wet ramp, but putting him between two parents made everything ok.
The price of your ticket includes the ability to pan for gold. It is more complicated than it looks, but it is enjoyable. We also bought a massive bucket of gems to "mine for." The $50 bucket was ample for our three children. They came home with gorgeous gems. The gold panning and gem mining are all done inside, under fans. The staff is all very nice and helpful during the process. You take your gold home in a tube, and your gems go home in durable plastic bags. They have a gift shop and clean bathrooms on site.

This was a on a whim excursion. We were not planning on visiting here, but when we were recommended it by a family member we couldn't pass it up! We did the underground tour, panned for gold and did the gem mining. The tour was great, not too long and our tour guide was great (even with his dad jokes)! My kids especially liked the panning for gold and gem mining. I would highly recommend!

This place is great!! We visited on a recent GA Mtn. trip and really enjoyed the mine! The guides are very knowledgeable and present in a way that kept everyone engaged. We've been in many caves, but never a real gold mine so this was both fun and educational for our family. The panning for gold was fun, my grandson found the most in our group, he had 4 pieces. We got the $50 bucket of gems to share and everyone ended up with a good amount of gemstones, I even found an emerald.

We just went as a couple, but this is definitely fun for the whole family. Our guide was Miner Lisa and she was phenomenal! She had a very engaging affect while giving us an incredible amount of information about the mine. She included the children in her storytelling, and was very knowledgeable when questions were asked. We also enjoyed the gold panning at the end; the staff there was also very friendly. The only thing you want to keep in mind when visiting is it is a mine, so there are significant declines with water and stairs to climb. Aside from that, I definitely recommend checking it out.

What a great experience. We did the mine tour with the panning for gold and everyone in the group got a little bit. We added in the gem mining and our group found emerald, sapphire, ruby, garnet, and many others. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the facility clean. Be sure to see Mike the lapidary in the gift shop area!

This was a very comprehensive tour. Chandler was our guide and was excellent. He had the perfect balance of historical knowledge mixed with humor. The tour was about 45 minutes long and after exiting the mine, we got to pan for gold (silver coins are included in your tour ticket to exchange for a pan after the mine). We also purchased a gem mining bucket. The restrooms are clean, the staff is very friendly and there are ample shaded picnic tables.

This was a surprisingly fun adventure. We got to explore the mines with our guide Kennedy who was very knowledgeable! Be ready to climb a lot of stairs!

Hello. I'm a bit claustrophobic and concerned about the small spaces etc. Did anyone find this to be of any issue? I can do elevators etc, just don't like tight confinded spaces. Thanks!

I did not feel any discomfort in there. The tunnels are opened up pretty well. There are a couple of low spots. They break up the groups really well so there is not many to a group, which helps.

Is the mine tour safe for smaller children (3 years old)? Some of the pictures make me feel hesitant with a small child.

I think it might be a bit much. An adult could fall, a child more so. Also, a 3-year-old might want to be carried, making it even more dangerous.

Hi, I am curious how long I should plan to be at Consolidated Gold mine with the tour and panning. I am trying plan my family's travel time to make it there and another location the same day. I don't want to cheat the stay if I only plan for 2 hours there. Is that enough time to take in the experience? Thank you for your opinion and help on my travel plans.

Yes, 2 hours should be fine. You go in and purchase your tickets. The tours leave about every 20 minutes and you can do a little gold panning until they call your tour. Seems like it was only a bout 10-15 minutes. Tour is maximum 45 minutes and includes a brief movie.

Is the ore that is panned from the mine itself or purchased from somewhere else? And has the ore been added with gold so visitors are sure to find something or the ore in its natrual state?

The mine isn’t active. When we went we were (that’s a lot of w’s) given pans with the sand in it. I can’t say if the gold is added or natural to the sand. Everyone in our party got something to take as a memento though.
The tour of the mine is really neat and informative. Especially if you’ve never seen one.

Is there wheel chair access? And if not, how much stair climbing is there? Have elderly grandparents who can walk but have a hard time with too many stairs.

Our gold panning, gem mining and gift shop are wheelchair accessible.
The Underground Gold Mine Tour is NOT wheelchair accessible. The total tour is about 0.5 miles round trip and consists of three flights of stairs (46 stairs) and two inclines. You enter and exit the Mine the same way.

Cutting stones starts at $25 for the majority of stones. Sterling silver mountings start at $25. We offer yellow and white gold too. Rubies, sapphires and emeralds have a higher price due to the labor involved in cutting those particular stones. Gold mounts vary with market.
The larger your earring, necklace or ring ( size of stone you choose) the higher the price. For example, if you purchased a $25 stone then added a pendent mount for $25 your total before tax is $50.
