The East Ridge Trail in Amicalola State Park begins at the back door of the Visitor Center and winds up the mountain slope to the top of Amicalola Falls. From this trail, you cannot see the falls, but you can see beautiful mountain woodland. The trail is well marked and in good shape, but it is very steep with tree roots and stones to step around. Hike this trail if you are looking for a challenge.

Instead of walking down the steps at the falls, we chose to take a trail back down. The map said this trail was a mile so we thought it wouldn't be too bad. Starts off easy on a wide road like path then quickly narrows to a path that is so small you have to keep one foot in front of the other to stay in...steep downhill...uneven ground...lots of rocks to step over. Eventually you get to more of a wooded path with signs stating to stay on the trail so you know you are still going the right way. Glad we ventured it, but it was not easy.

Before the Lodge was built, there were three ways to get to the AT approach trail. One was the road to the top of the falls, the second the West Ridge trail and the third was the East Ridge trail. They all get to the same place, but I'm particularly fond of the East Ridge trail. I hiked it with friends for the first time in 1975 and have ascended it regularly since. You start at the Ranger station and simply follow the blazes and go up...and up...and up :). Take the time to enjoy the views along the way and the spectacular view of the valley below and the top of the falls the the end of the trail. Time well spent.

The Trail climbs to the top of Amicalola Falls is strenuous simply because of the climb. kids above 7 can do it.
This is a part of Georgia Appalachian Trail sign and goes upto Maine.
Those who cant hike can drive upto the top.

Well maintained trail, quiet, beautiful forest. East climb, nice zig zag that anyone with minimal fitness should be able to complete if not in a hurry.
