We discovered the Bedingfield Inn when we drove into the town of Lumpkin, GA to get a picnic lunch to take to Providence Canyon. Bedingfield Inn is a lovingly restored Victorian stagecoach inn built around 1836. Located in the center of the city, it stands out amongst the dilapidated closed-up buildings. We walked around the 2-story inn building, peering in the windows. On the front of the building, there are 2 entrance doors, one for the men to enter a "public" room where they could socialize and drink. Since women were not supposed to be seen in such places with the men, the women had a separate entrance into a parlor where they could visit together. Behind the Inn is a single story building, which was perhaps a kitchen area. Although there is a historic marker, it does not provide details about the layout of the site. There is also a garden, which was overgrown, but appeared to have roses, and then there was a log cabin "dog trot", roughly from the same period I guess. The buildings are interesting to see, as they represent the bustling frontier times dominated by an agrarian plantation lifestyle. For me, though, the greater intrigue of this site is the story of how such a booming city has turned into a near ghost-town. We passed a closed bbq restaurant and a Dollar General (which had very limited selection). We couldn't find a picnic lunch, but we left with lots to think about.
