I teach GA Studies and the Little Grand Canyon is Providence Canyon State Park - so we came for a visit to see it in person, as it’s considered one of GA’s 7 wonders. The website does a great job explaining the canyon trails and what to expect. It’s very muddy - GA red clay muddy. If it had rained, we would’ve sunk into the clay in some areas, and hiking boots would have been needed. We hiked the white blaze - which was about 2 miles - and circles the canyon. There are some great views into and across the canyon from this trail - better if it was fall or winter, as the trees block some of the viewpoints. We also went to canyon trail 3,4, and 5 - as it looked the least muddy (we were only wearing sneakers) and got some great pictures of the canyon from the floor. Really neat looking! Glad we went when they first opened, at 8:00 AM. Hikes and exploring took us about 2 hours. Side note: there’s an old cemetery just before you arrive at the trail start and many of the graves are pre Civil War or just after. One person buried there died in the Battle of Griswoldville - a battle that occurred on Sherman’s March to the Sea, in Nov 1864, and was one of the last skirmishes fought in GA, with the end of the War in site. The city manufactured revolvers and was burned, and never rebuilt.

I found out about this park when I was in graduate school when I was watching a television show. I always wanted to see this park, but I never had the right opportunity. This park was about an hour‘s drive from Columbus. The staff was friendly and there was a five dollar ($5.00) parking fee which one must drop into a box. There was also a gift shop, some bathrooms, a playground, and some grills. The walk down to the canyons was steep, but the nine (9) canyons were absolutely incredible! The signage was not my favorite, but I got many beautiful pictures of the canyons. It was buggy and the ground was wet and sandy, so please use the best judgment with regard to these factors. The canyon loop trail was also very interesting and one was able to see many rusted cars. I arrived on a Monday at about 8:30 AM, and I was the only guest there for quite some time. I walked about five (5) miles in the 2.75 hours which I spent at the park. I did see a few rodents but no other significant animal life. The cell phone reception was poor within the park. One should also carry some water during his or her time on the trails.

Who would expect to find something like this in Georgia? Although not as large by any measure, the colors will remind you of Bryce Canyon National Park. Easy to just stop and take in the overlooks or take a trail and see more. Plenty of parking available, clean restrooms and affordable entrance fee make this well worth a visit. The fact it is the result of human activity and not God created should give us all pause as we consider our actions...This is definitely one of the better state parks we have visited in the SE U.S.

Went with my family which included my grandkids ages 1-7. We had such a great time. We were so glad we waited in line to get in. They were having a run the day we went so it was really busy. We waited about an hour but it was so worth it. The canyon is beautiful and the hike was so worth it to get to the bottom of the canyon. Would definitely recommend and can’t wait to go again.

We had a great time enjoying the views and the hike to the bottom. We had a family from 5 years old to 62 and we all make it just fine.

My party and I had a great experience at this park. Entry was very affordable, amenities appeared well maintained, and the park itself is beautiful. We walked the White Blaze Canyon Loop Trail which was slightly steep for a short period of time, there were many with dogs or young children. I wouldnt have wanted to hike this trail with my young child out of fear of slipping or sliding but many did.

I enjoyed hiking to to the canyons which was essentially just walking next to streams until we reached the canyon walls.

This is a beautiful park!

What a magical place, it truly was the little Grand Canyon of Georgia! We stayed at Florence Marina State Park which was about a 20 minutes away. Hiked down to the canyon floor, pretty mucky so boots are advisable. But if you are careful you can avert the muck for the most part. Lots of footprints in the sand of what we think were bobcat. We had read reviews that wild boar were prevalent here on the Backwoods Trail, so we decided maybe to skip that. At the intersection of the upper rim and backwoods trail we spotted them. It was a stampede of about 30! They are not little either, 200+ pounds as adults. We saw one the following day hit by a car in the road sadly. Just be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine!

When planning our trip to Georgia I found this canyon on the internet. While it looked really cool, the pictures just don’t truly capture how pretty it is in person. We only did the shorter hike, but I would still highly recommend planning a trip here.

A very enjoyable day of hiking can be had here while exploring the white trail canyons. The park is well maintained and facilities are very clean.

Beautiful colors abound in the Providence Canyons, from the red squishy sand in the canyon trails, to the multiple colored rocks lining the canyon, some great pictures are in order. The trail to the canyon starts from the top - just remember you have to climb back up the trail to get to your car. The beauty of the canyon is relative. If you are from the West, the size and uniqueness of the canyons will be small and boring. If you have never been to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Bryce, etc., you will find these structures to be larger than life and fascinating. In any case, my order of recommended canyons, from best to least is 5,4, 2, 3, 1. Be open to taking an occasional side path to get up closer to the cliffs. You may have to cut through a little brush to get there. On the downside, a few inconsiderate people have carved their initials into the soft stone canyon walls - too bad. Consider stopping at the playground and look out over the canyon from the top. Also consider the longer canyon edge loop to see things from above. Suggest going in spring or fall, as the heat is relentless in the summer.
