The experience was a positive one from the moment we arrived. The parking was good and allowed for sufficient space for a wheelchair user. The response from the staff was excellent recognising a person with a disability and the person with them as a carer in an inclusive way. The museum was accessible in every sense; sufficient space, information at an accessible height and a lift to be able to see all the exhibits. In the cafe there was again appropriate levels of space and a clean bathroom. We would thoroughly recommend the museum.

We had a rainy day so decided to go to the museum and we are so glad we did. It is absolutely fantastic and the fact it is dog friendly is amazing. The £12 entrance fee is extremely reasonable for what there is to see. We spent 2 and a half hours there which included us stopping for coffee and cake in the restaurant which was also reasonably priced. Friendly staff and a nice gift shop.

Super museum with a good range of beautifully maintained vehicles, relevant information & a staggering collection of garage signage & what Henry Cole would describe as 'trinketry'! There are some other interesting historical displays & vintage games. Also the lovely cafe overlooking the river was an unexpected delight. I would have loved to purchased a replica poster of one of the fab deco style posters dotted around the museum, perhaps the gift shop could consider!

During a week long holiday in the lakes with friends, the weather forecast was rain so we needed to find an undercover activity to keep us busy and oh my did we hit the jackpot here. This wonderful museum was jam packed with exhibits big and small and beautifully laid out. An informative welcome greeted us and we then followed the arrows on the floor so we didn’t miss any of the cars, motorbikes, scooters, cycles, car and bike parts and so much more. All well explained at each exhibit with text and many videos. Having taken our time to enjoy seeing as much as we could, we then had a nice bit to eat in the superb cafe restaurant before finishing our visit in the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition before spending a few quid in the gift shop!
All four of us plus our 4 legged friend thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

We planned this museum into our itinerary whilst visiting the Lake District as a wet weather attraction. We'd heard many good stories about this place from friends and online reviews so we thought let's check it out, we like cars and we like museums!
The weather for our trip turned out to be one of the funniest of the year so we spend a good deal out and about, because that's what you do in the Lake District. We thought we were not going to fit the visit in, until one morning it was so wet and dreary so alas we got in the car and headed down.
The car park is more than ample to handle decent numbers and is literally across the road from the museum. Upon entering we paid at the entrance via the shop and had a lovely chat with the staff. They explained toilets, what to look out for and was a nice change to miserable staff in other museums.
The museum itself was a treasure trove of vehicles and motoring memorabilia from years past and there was always something that caught your eye wherever you looked. The museum is not the largest place considering its location but boy they have thought and planned this out magnificently.
We spend a good two hours here in awe at the exhibits and reminiscing about the old cars that were once road Worthing in our childhood.
It's a great little place to spend a few hours.
Downsides - it's small so can easily get overcrowded quickly and make enjoyment a little difficult when people get in the way. Photo opportunities aren't the best and you are stuck with where you can access to get a decent photo.
The gift shop is surprisingly good and is probably one of the best I've seen in a museum setting.
The cafe onsite is fantastic too but the menu is limited to what my kids called 'old people fodder' and offered nothing exciting. It's ok for a cuppa and some cake.

On a drizzly grey lakeland day when the cloud cover is so low that you can’t even see the fells that you’re not going to walk up there’s little for casual tourist to do aside from mooch listlessly around one of the picturesque but over-crowded towns and villages or visit a museum. We opted for the latter. A good choice as it turned out.
I have only a passing interest in cars, essentially no interested in motor-cycles and the last time I was on a push-bike I was in short trousers as opposed to shorts (there is a difference). Having said that, I do enjoy history and engineering so in the absence of a steam train (there is one nearby but I only discovered that afterwards) we went to the Lakeland Motor Museum.
The Lake District is not an obvious location for a museum dedicated to the internal combustion engine. True, parts of the lakes do have an industrial past but much of that industry was water powered not petrol or diesel. They have a lot of water. The site where the museum now sits, on the banks of the river Leven, was once the dye packaging sheds for a Blue Mill (blue being a thing as well as a colour) located just upstream in Backbarrow village. Here they produced ultramarine pigment used (amongst other things) as a blue dye for whitening laundry (known as Dolly Blue). I know! Mad, right? They do the same thing these days on teeth on Instagram with purple toothpaste. This probably explains the striking shade of blue the museum building is painted in.
For your £12 entrance fee (kids £7.20) you are guided by red arrows on the floor round the exhibits. The one-way system feels appropriate. We wandered past Donald Campbell’s 1937 Bentley (blue, naturally), a vintage American something, probably a Cadillac, purporting to be connected in some way with Al Capone (I didn’t read the information board, the shop dummy in the black fedora was a bit intimidating and there was a queue for the info). There were vintage Jags, MGs (the 1960 MGA Roadster police car, replete with mannequins looking like extras from Heartbeat was a special favourite), an amphicar (handy for nearby Windermere), the oldest TVR in the world and the almost obligatory DeLorean. There are newer “classics” too - Fords (Escort, Cortina and Capri) as well as a Vauxhall Corsa (the right way up and without a teenage boy inside, and no, I have no idea why it’s here either). The motorcycles and scooters evoked less nostalgia for me but there’s no doubt the collection here is impressive. The highlight for me though was wandering through the galleries of bicycles. The steady stream of people walking slowly past things and pointing would concertina up to an almost imperceptible shuffle as it passed those icons of a 1970’s UK childhood; the Raleigh Chopper and Grifter. Classic.
In a separate building but included in the entrance fee, there’s an exhibition dedicated to Malcolm and Donald Campbell and their Bluebirds of various types. It’s a poignant exhibition. Ludicrously dangerous feats of speed and derring-do, proper Boys Own stuff; but when you consider that Malcolm was that rare beast amongst his pioneering speed freak fraternity in that he managed to die of natural causes when many around him didn’t, you do wonder why his son, Donald, appeared to be somewhat blasé about the dangers and comes across as slightly cavalier. Famously and tragically Donald was not as lucky as his father and was killed on Consiton water in 1967 during another attempt at the world water speed record. The exhibition should serve as a salutary reminder, particularly to the younger male portion of society, that speed may be exhilarating but coming to a sudden, uncontrolled and unexpected stop is what will kill you.
The nostalgia is heavy, the setting beautiful and the cafe’s pretty good too. Rain or shine, worth a visit.

Great motor museum covering cars, motorcycles and push bikes. Well worth the visit whilst in the area and not too expensive £12 each like others we have visited. Nice cafe and a second museum dedicated to the Bluebird nearby. Got there 30 mins after opening and was not too busy and spent just over 2 hrs there , although it did start to get busy with a coach arriving.

Well worth a visit, if only to see TT bikes and video. Big fan of TT and to see,a Joey Dunlop bike.,was unbelievable. All well presented.Campbell exhibition very informative, visited Coniston afterwards to get full experience. Would highly recommend for a visit.

Visited on Friday 6th September. Very good. IT is almost impossible to appreciate all the exhibits as there are so many in limited space. A fabulous collections of motorbikes. I liked the mannequins for their realistic looks and dress. And the food was good and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit

It depends how much you like cars and bikes. If you're really interested you can easily spend the whole morning or afternoon. Otherwise I would say an hour to one & a half hours. There is a really good cafe there so slow extra time if you want food and /or a drink.

However if there is something you're specifically interested in engaging with, please contact us in advance or speak to our staff on the day and we'll see how we can offer assistance. There is a 1930s dodgem car on the ground floor and a static pedal car on the first floor viewing gallery children are allowed to sit in. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the question. We receive a lot of visiting children, both families and schools who enjoy the Museum. We offer a free children's quiz which is well suited to this age range - children receive a medal for doing the best at the quiz, which follows the route around the Museum.
