Not offering self guided tour today
2021年6月 • 家庭
Planned a stop here on a trip north from middle Georgia. Came out of our way to see this because of all the good trip advisor reviews. Very friendly staff member then told us we weren’t allowed to do a self guided tour and all guided tours were booked up until 3 hours later...in the rain. Bad storm coming and we have about 20 minutes before rain will set in for two days. Upsetting beginning to our mountain trip, couldn’t even see this historical site to take family photos. Not even sure why.

Surprising gem filled with history

So much history delivered well here. We happened to be here for the Battle Field Hospital Civil War reenactment. It is worth you time to come anytime to go through the railroad tunnel and the home that was a civil war hospital for a time.

An off the path delight

Tunnel Hill preserves a railroad tunnel built in the 1850s and is a central figure in The Great Locomotive Chase, during the Civil War. Nice small museum. GREAT tour of the tunnel via electric carts. Ask for JENNIFER as your guide. I was the only one on her tour that day. She was extremely informative, and quite a polite young woman, who clearly loves her job.

cool little museum

We paid the $12 for the museum and the guided tour through the tunnel and around the property. A lot of interesting stuff. The guide was great and had a lot of interesting tidbits about the tunnel and the surrounding area. Definitely worth a couple of hours of your time if you're in the area. Really interesting part of Georgia history.

Just a small wonderful historical part to the war of northern aggression.

I always enjoy the small places. This place has a great little museum that is self guided and if you are lucky enough, you'll meet Judy who was mopping the floor when I arrived and still took time to explain how everything works. She was informative, nice, funny and didn't mind that I was a nearly civil war minded individual. Make sure to take both tours, they are well worth the cost which is only 12 dollars.

Small but full coverage of area Civil War history

I would highly suggest either the phone tour or get the paper copy because it goes into detail what you are seeing. Some of the train items I never knew existed. My wife was impressed with the tea pot as well as the cannon shells.

Small Museum

Its a pretty way to spend a weekend for Atlanta locals. Not worth a visit for tourists to drive all the way here

1. Civil War memorabilia from the railroads of the mid-1800s especially
2. Small trip to the tunnel that was dug directly through a rock mountain in Tunnel Hill, GA
3. Tour is in motorized eight seat golf cart

Fascinating piece of history

My husband and I visited Tunnel Hill Heritage Center on a day when the rest of the family went hiking in the mountains. I love history, particularly Southern history, but didn't know about this. It was amazing to me to know that I was standing in the same places that Gen. Grant and Gen. Sherman once stood. Unfortunately, the tunnel itself was closed due to repairs and maintenance. That is the only reason this doesn't get 5 stars from me. Having said that, our guide was so knowledgeable and interesting. I loved the tour of the house, especially the fact that they had not closed off areas, making it very accessible both upstairs and downstairs. I look forward to the possibility of visiting there again in the future when some of their plans for improvement have taken place.

Heritage Center

This is a great place to go back into historical times. A time to revisit history of the civil war. In 1864 Federal Forces took control of Tunnel Hill making this their first move toward Atlanta. Just one of the fascinating stories to be told and relived in this historical land mark of our Nation. The displays inside the center are very moving and realistic. You will just have to take time to visit this center.
