The zip line experience was great. Guides Cyril and Christian were a hoot and made it great fun. We did the first two levels which was perfect for us. It was clearly their off-season which meant no crowds! Our only criticism is the lack of directional signage getting into and out of the facility. We had to go back into the lodge to ask how to exit and were told to "Ignore the two arrows on the road and drive back up the hill."

Place is great! But the food on the other hand is quite lackluster. It feels like it’s missing a lot of components. When we ate it tasted like literally nothing. The breakfast lunch and dinner. They also had confederate flags on some of their trucks (red flag).

Friends and I went on a trip that was hours long and spanned a lot of the course. Having been a former 5 plus year tour guide, I am well aware of the safety standards for courses as well as what this course was capable of.

In short: food- good as always. Wait staff/ office staff- perfectly pleasant. Online waivers etc- easy.

The long: everything here is about the safety of the course. Again, having years of experience in the industry I’m very familiar with the course and what it “once was.” Unfortunately this isn’t only my own experience but that of many other former guides….

The flight of the falcon tower- needs repainting immediately. It looks unfinished with the stain. This is cosmetic. The railings are wobbly and therefore unsafe as you don’t clip in anywhere til you get to the top (or free fall etc). Screws in the center supports of the stairs are splitting the wood deeply and a lot of nails/ screws are sticking out. L brackets have 8 screws in a single plate thereby splitting the wood behind it and weakening the integrity. There’s safe ways to do this of course but the wobbly-ness at the base plates show that this is likely a significant cause.

Screaming eagle tower- the ground 2-3 floors have many nails/ screws sticking out causing trip hazards or, with a bad step/ misplaced hand, an impacted body part. The whole tower appeared to have shorty craftsmanship and other guests remarked at possible wood rot in many areas or need of resealing. The top of the tower is even worse. First, guides standing on the box that heads on ridge runner is a major safety concern and merely inches from falling off the tower entirely especially when leveraging weight to hook up guests. This has been a guide complaint for over a decade. The fences blocking the bath of the screaming eagle lines are OK but mismatched and make the entire look appear “janky.” It’s cheap and not reassuring. Guests will focus on the differences wondering “what else doesn’t match around here?” Lastly, the fence that stops someone from falling off between the two eagle lines wobbles a lot. If a person leaned on it, say to take a photograph, it could very easily fall leading to a 100 foot drop. This used to not be a major concern as one could “clip in” to a life rated for wire that hung in the middle of 2 of the poles. However. Now, guests must stand in awkward areas utilizing these flip in methods of the newer system which can’t hold but a few guests at a time because of the limited space and length of rope on the “clip” device each guest is given.

Throughout the course: several branches hanging along the lines. I even hit on myself, causing some pain to my hand and leaving a small bruise. I’ve photographed the branch I hit, screenshot from my video camera. This was done on a 50 plus mph zip line and a guest not paying attention or “tucking” could definitely have been hurt. Note that the course is very large and it takes a lot to maintain but major ziplines, ridden so frequently, need to be maintained regularly.

One line needed definite replacement “little daddy” which is a short access line off of big daddy. Other may need it too but this was evident due to the amount of burrs within a certain amount of feet per industry standard. Not my expertise here but another guest; who has built courses, remarked it a violation of standardized practices.

Next: many of the bridges, mainly those in the terminator area are in need of a lot of work. One entire board came completely off with just a mere step. It fell to the ground, having had several exposed nails/ screws. No big deal- lots of wood is there that needs to be maintained and it’s hard to spot it all. But this isn’t a one-off. This is the entire course in the terminator section. Wood on some of the swinging bridges have begun to rot. Wood on the platforms have shifted away from the tree due to growth/ use and thereby weight upon the boards causes them to sink as they’re no longer secured.

Two springs appeared to be in good order minus some of the stair cases. One was missing a wire that would feed through the hand rails, creating the hand rail. Else it’s wobbly posts which have small spot welds that can fail at any moment. Granted you’re “hooked in” but you’re not utilizing your hook as a way to help you up the stairs as you would do with the handrail.

There’s much more to remark upon but it’d take a long time to document and my purpose was to enjoy an old memory and not do a full evaluation of the course.

Having spoken with other tour guides both active and present I’ve learned a lot of the business, zip line side, has slowed down immensely. This could be because of covid but needless to say- less customers equals decreased staff equals decreased repairs.

Having had a full experience once more, I would not go back to the course until many of these things are fixed.

If I can take a moment to brag about other things- the new braking systems on the faster lines are excellent and a great addition to safety as are the new harnesses.

So, Mr. Younger, Mr. Krause and Mr. White, all past guides a long time ago: All came out in February 2023 for an All Day Rush tour. This year, 2023, has been very busy so far but February is cold and we do not get a lot of outside adventure bookings during these cold months. Not sure how you can assess business on one day in the winter?? And .... it is always beautiful at Banning but winter can be monotone in colors since the leaves are not green. But in saying that, winter allows for fantastic long views with all the leaves gone. Winter is still beautiful at Banning. As all three of you know, we build zipline canopy tours all over the world as well as train and inspect courses. We have an excellent reputation over the last 20 years in this industry. To my knowledge, all 3 of you were guides and not inspectors or builders. But let's address your comments: First, the AT tower, not the Flight of the Falcon tower has not been stained in 3 years. We do every 5 years. With the wind and sun and weather elements 24/7, it is going to look a bit weathered at times but that is not a safety isssue. The rails are built as continuous so If a rail came off (never has), the whole tower would have to come down. You know that we inspect the course and towers daily when in use. There are always nails and screw heads that have to be torqued down due to the continual movement of towers (as it should be). Again, this is not a safety issue. Also, wood discoloration is NOT rot. No rotten wood. As to platforms: Guides are secured with a crab claw system and guests are secured with the continual closed belay system. This is the safer system currently being used in the industry. Just because a platform is small does not make it insecure. Again, all are secured into the system. Our platforms are checked daily when in use and are secure. And platforms do not push Out because of growth of a tree. The tree actually would grow over a platform if left unattended. None of our platforms are like that. We do continual trimming of trees because trees grow! Sometimes the wind will blow a small branch close to a guest but all trees are kept trimmed and out of the way of participants. We have no control over the wind or when the wind moves a branch. And: a guide goes down First before a guest ever goes down. A guide would have called in to the office if a tree limb, branch, etc was a problem and would not let a guest go down until fixed. Guides: really not sure who you are talking to on guides and if you are not working here, why are you so interested in this? Our guides are appreciative of their jobs, feel very secure in coming to management with problems or things noticed and overall , love working here. We appreciate our staff very much and when you left, all of you expressed the same thing. Finally, if you were so concerned about safety, why did you do an 8 hour course and leave without stating one problem to staff? Any problems stated to staff have been and always will be checked out because safety of our guests is main priority with us. Any concerns you had could have been noted to management without going to a public forum to try and hurt not only us but everyone that works. here. And, your concerns were not warranted for such a long discertation made here. The concerns were not safety related as you thought. We have a pristine record in the zipline canopy tour industry. And that has been over 20 years. We must be doing something right. We are standards developers, voting members of ASTM and Professional Vendor Members of ACCT and certified level 3 inspectors. We built and manage 11 other parks including Banning Mills which is the largest in the world. Our parks are all inspected by a third party annually as well as our daily inspections. There is not a higher standard. Again, such concerns, as a courtesy, could have first been communicated with Mike but I guess you were too busy being anonymous and upset that the tours were not free to you.

I can not recommend the ziplining at Historic Banning Mills highly enough. The zip lines are fast, thrilling, and give you nice views of the scenic environment. The guides were awesome!! They were helpful, personable, and made you feel comfortable with the equipment and activity. My only warning is, they have different bridges you need to cross while you are doing the tour. They were challenging and a bit unnerving for me, but others in our group seemed to enjoy them. All-in-all I say if you are in the Atlanta area and want some outdoor fun and excitement, give these guys your consideration!!!

Being a zipline canopy tour, the bridges are used to go upwards to get to the next level of ziplines. They can be a little challenging but that is part of the adrenaline rush. And, our guests are in a continuous closed belay system so you can't fall off! So glad you came out and pushed thru! You are a trooper! Come back soon. You have got it now!!

My Senior's Group had the best time ziplining! The instructors were knowledgeable and patient with the Senior Group. First, they fit you with your gear, and then you go through training. Even though I was a little nervous, I am so glad to have had this experience. And I will do it again!

Visited to celebrate a 75th birthday for a friend. We elected to do level 2. There were some moderately challenging rope walks, mostly after the level 1 course was completed. We all just loved it, despite some trepidation at the start. Jumping off that 1st platform is a bit unnerving!

My daughter and I try to take a "baseball trip" once each summer. We try to catch at least two games with one often being a minor league game. This year was a last minute plan with Atlanta being the only MLB team we hadn't seen that was playing the weekend we could both travel. So off to ATL we went. On our trips we also like to do something besides baseball. It might be a walking tour of Boston or visiting the local zoo. This year when looking around we noticed a lot of ziplines. Most seemed good but Banning Mills stood out.

We found the place rather easily and found the check in process simple. I had never been and my daughter had only gone once when she was in grade school, which is now a frightening long time ago. I had no nerves prior to my arrival but once I got there they started to ramp up. The trees are tall, the zip lines long. What was I doing? I'm old, not that much of an adventurer any longer, so what's the point? Well, those thoughts were just plan silly. I was here because this is one of the most fun things I've done in my life.

Keep in mind, there is some work involved, but that makes it all the better. The bridges aren't simple but pretty much anyone can do it. You just need to have a little patience and the guides will talk you through it. Our group was large and we had some very slow people but everyone was encouraging and we eventually got into a rhythm and everything went smoothly.

We only did the first two levels due to time but if we had been able to stay we would have done all 4 levels. Also, while at the start the guides seems a bit "stern" there is good reason. This is not an easy job. They are trying to a) keep things moving, b) make sure everyone is safe, c) make the adventure enjoyable for a wide range of people. Once we got into it the guides were able to relax and little and the fun increased throughout the tour.

Also, I was so impressed by the main building and the grounds. I had zero idea what to expect but everything was so well kept and clean. It's a rustic place but at the same time very neat and tidy. Not an easy task given the size of the place and the number of visitors.

Last, their safety system is brilliant. They claim you are always attached to the line. They are not kidding. Once you hook on at the beginning you literally attached to a line until your feet are back on the ground.

We came to Atlanta for a baseball game which we enjoyed but this was the highlight. If I was ever back and was given the choice of Ziplining or attending another Braves game...Ziplining at Banning Mills wins 10 out of 10. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Couple of notes: 1. You can leave your keys at the front desk if you don't have any place to keep them. 2. Bring something to carry your phone. While they do take and share photos (for free btw) I really wish I had my phone with me to take photos.

We had an excellent experience. The guides were very patient and helpful. This was my first time zip lining and I had a lot of fun. There are multiple 'stages' that you can do. I did only the first stage which had 9 (I think) zip lines. The other three people in my family who had all zip lined before also did the second stage which included more ropes course type elements. They enjoyed them but it would have been too much for me. There was also a lot to do on the property besides zip lining.

Tracy, the level 1 tour you did had 9 ziplines and 1 sky bridge. Many have trepidation on the sky bridges and they are geard more towards building self confidence. Very glad you got to come out and maybe one day you can go on to the other levels. Longer, faster ziplines and beautiful views.
