While there are many places that are not open to the public, this still a cool place to visit. Check out the bison! If you have any interest in Science (or other STEM careers), they often have Ask a Physicist programs, Open Houses, lectures and other special events. There are many programs for children - be sure to check out the education center. In addition, it has many cultural programs in their auditorium. If you ever get the chance to catch a Mr. Freeze presentation, do it!!!

Fermilab has been on our son's to see list for a couple of years. We were so glad to finally make it. Check their website for special events as they do hold lectures, teacher training, and guided tours on very set days. The famous building is open daily for the public to go to the 15th floor. Great views, several videos to watch, and some exhibits. On the 1st floor, there is also a few exhibits and they had posters my son and nephew could take. On the 2nd floor is a small art gallery. Another fun part is getting the map so you can drive to the pi-shaped power lines, a few large sculptures, and the field of bison! When we were there we saw 3 new bison calves! Note there are age restrictions for some of the guided tours but visiting the building on your own or the grounds has no restrictions and worth the stop!

I always bring here friends who are out of the area and know nothing about existence if this laboratory and surrendering grounds. It is open for visitors 7 days a week. You don’t pay to visit it. There is a great view from the 15th floor where displays and scaled mock up for tourists are located. It is just a great place. You can come here to see concerts or lectures which are usually free of charge or don’t cost much. Best check Fermilab website before you come here. A lot is happening here. Also you can bring kids with you. A lot of interesting activities for kids. There is also a pasture with bisons on the grounds.

I am continually blown away by what scientists are doing and have discovered at Fermilab. It’s a fabulous place to visit (scenery, buffalo herd, vista from the observation tower, art gallery, and following the docents around as they tour you through this terrific place). Fermilab has been a Godsend to Batavia, Kane County, and the State of Illinois. Not only is it open to the public but they host classroom events and field trips, schedule entertainment in the Ramsey Auditorium, and provide lectures to the interest of all. Your visit will not disappoint!

Our docent Cathy took five of us on the regular Wednesday tour but we were no ordinary group. One was an employee with a friend, and my buddy and I can speak technology well. Besides, the two of us are known for asking questions, which Cathy handled well. She added in a couple of extra stops to delight us, and she even chatted with me about my science fiction novels, since I told her one of my reasons for the visit was to stimulate story ideas. Next time (I will go back), I'll stop at their tourist store and get a FermiLab t-shirt with their cool magnet design. Expect to park at some distance from the main building because of all the employees and outside workers.

Since 1967, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, more commonly referred to as Fermilab, has worked to answer such fundamental questions as "What are we made of?" and "How did the Universe begin?" and "What secrets do the smallest particles of matter hold?" and "How can they help us to understand the intricacies of space and time?" and to enhance our understanding of everything we see around us. Located at Kirk Road and Pine Street in Batavia, Illinois, about 40 miles west of Chicago, Fermilab is the United States' premier particle
physics laboratory. The 6,800-acre site is home to 1,750 scientists and engineers from all over the world who collaborate with more than 50 countries on physical experiments based in the United States and elsewhere. They work on the world's most advanced particle accelerators and dig down to the smallest building blocks of matter. They also probe the farthest reaches of the Universe, seeking out the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The data from these experiments is collected and analyzed with powerful detectors and computers. And it's all there for one and all to see via public tours, tours by appointment, self-guided tours, audio driving tours, student field trips, even videos. Fermilab is open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through March and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the rest of the year. Visitors are allowed to visit two buildings on their own: Wilson Hall, which contains the Fermilab Art Gallery, and the Leon Lederman Science Education Center. The 30-minute, free audio driving tour is particularly illuminating. It guides you around the site, shares Fermilab's science and history and offers such highlights as Wilson Hall, neutrino experiments, magnets, bird-watching, the bison herd, the Proton Pagoda, the Bubble Chamber and the Lederman Science Center. It's an educational experience unlike any other.

Went to there a few years beck when volunteering as mentor for the local high school math and engineering program, also I studied radiochemistry as my major in college. With a great respect for this place that many famous nuclear scientists worked at here here before. Many areas are restricted so just the conference room and reception area. But it was enough to give me a chill.

Two years ago we visited the Homestake Mine in South Dakota and learned about the dark matter experiment. So cool to visit here and see the other end of the experiment!

Loved all the exhibits on the 15th floor of the Wilson Building.

We only had an hour but it was time well spent. We will have to come back again!

I grew up near FermiLab and would actually ride my bike out there to take advantage of their huge Steinway concert grand to practice on. When it was built, I was a little girl and loved visiting the bison herd with my dad. All I knew back then was that. It was an “atom smasher” and imagined that the tower was where they smashed the atoms... like a huge plunger dropped from top to bottom where the smashed atoms would be picked up like pieces of smashed marbles (what can I say.... I was 5 and not exactly a theoretical physicist!)

Fast forward 50 years and my oldest son IS studying to become a theoretical physicist so stopped on my way through town. He had only read about and studied accelerators in school and had heard of FermiLab so he thought it was extremely cool. Going up to the top floor where you could still see the mounds from the decommissioned partial accelerator and reading about the research was amazing for him... and fun for me as his mom.

Both boys even enjoyed seeing the Bison though the Bison kept their distance. Would have loved to taken the meet the physicist tour but it was full. Also wished we lived closer because there is a public colloquial talk that my son would have been very interested in attending.

Whether you are there for the views / Bison or enjoy geeking out about physics and science, definitely worth the stop... it’s free and doesn’t take long to explore. Plus, it is one of the few places I can think of dedicated to Richard Nixon!

The cancer research has been wonderful. I don't think the public knows how much they have done. They have interactive displays which makes it interesting for children. Love walking the paths. My favorite is stopping to see the buffalo on the grounds.
