Quick stop and glad we did!

This was a quick stop to check out the cave. We were quite surprised at just how big it was and how far back it went. Not sure if the legends are true of 'river pirates' hiding out here, but certainly can see how they could have! Also imagine this area gets flooded quite often, as it's right on the river bank. We didn't check out any thing else in the park (trails, etc), but are glad we made this stop. Very interesting.

Secret Trail to Cave - Easy Peasy!

Here's a tip: The best way to get to the cave without climbing ANY steps is to park at the first parking lot to find (there is an old Pepsi sign there). Walk toward the end of it and you will see a smooth rock trail just ahead to the left. Take that to the right and keep going. You will go through a gravel area, and then find the smooth trail again that takes you to the mouth of the cave. Too easy!

Awesome day trip

Such a great place to visit and explore. We rode the ferry over into Kentucky and back, then hiked down to the cave. The history of Cave in Rock is interesting and this was our grandson’s first cave, so it was a perfect start for him.

Great stop

So happy we stopped to see the cave. I felt like the signage in the Shawnee Forest left a lot to be desired. But we found our way. It was helpful to read that this cave was used in the movie How the West Was Won. We are old enough to remember that movie. The part about the cave was something I’d always remembered. Great stop

Neat little spot to visit. Very scenic right by the Ohio River, and interesting history.

This cave is in a neat little park right by the Ohio River. At first, we didn't know quite where to park, but we figured it out and then took several flights of steps down to the cave. It was interesting figuring out the history of the cave. It was a really hot day, and we didn't do much hiking, but I appreciated seeing the cave and then going to the lodge dining room for an afternoon dessert.

Hole in Where?

I'm not sure how to rate this. This park is there, but with no info. There is no visitor's center, no office, no nothing. We finally went to the restaurant where the manager said they had no hiking maps but could use our phone to photograph a map glued to cardboard. Turned out this was a road map of the park, not hiking trails.
We finally found the Cave in Rock partially by accident and partially because the park is not that big. No signs for anything.
ILLINOIS: DO A BETTER JOB. YOU HAVE SOME NICE PARKS - PUT OUT SOME INFORMATION FOR VISITORS.
If you're in the area, its kinda nice - don't drive over 30 minutes through... The main attraction is a large hole in the sandstone rock bordering the Ohio River. That's it.

So-so, know what you are getting into!

The park is easy to find, the cave less so. You can park in the lot that appears right after you enter the park. Then you have to go up a series of steps and then down another series of steps. Alternatively, you can drive past that lot, and the road turns to the right and more or less doubles back on itself. There are 3 shelters on this part of the park road. Park on the side of the road just before shelter 3, or in the parking lot for shelter 3, and you just have the steps going down to deal with. Vault toilets are available near this parking site. If you pass shelter #3 you have gone too far. The cave is not too far from the bottom of the steps, to the left. The entrance is worth a picture. However, be aware that (at least when we were there), this place was VERY MUDDY, and I don't think it had recently been raining. If you fall, you will be a mess! I went part-way in only. I don't advise going too far if you are unsteady on your feet or if you have nice clothes or shoes on. Wear gloves at least, if you can. The view is ok

A neat place to visit

This cave is a neat place. The entrance is right next to the Ohio River. You can even put your hand in the water as you walk to the entrance. The cave is not too large, but it is impressive. However, use caution inside as the uneven dirt & rock floors can be slippery. Because of the many stairs required to get to the cave & the uneven surfaces inside I do not recommend this for people that are mobility impaired.

Whenever I visit Cave-in-Rock State Park on the banks of the Ohio River, I always think of the epic movie How The West Was Won and wonder if James Stewart, who played the mountain man Linus Rawlings, really fought Walter Brennan and river pirates in this cave. A scene in the movie actually was filmed here. Over the centuries, the majestic Ohio River has silently carved the limestone bluffs that line the shores of the scenic Shawnee area along the southeastern border of Illinois. Among the most beautiful and visited tourist attractions stands the historic cavern of Cave-in-Rock State Park. Located in the village of Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, it was acquired by the State of Illinois in 1929. It was discovered by a European explorer in 1739. The earliest known permanent white settlers arrived in 1816 and started building a town. Today, the population is 318. Historically, beginning in the 1790s, Cave-in-Rock became a refuge for frontier outlaws, river pirates, counterfeiters, horse thieves, robbers, gamblers, bandits and highwaymen. Western explorers frequently used the cave for shelter during their stops along the river. They knew a good thing when they saw it. The cave's primary feature is a striking 55-foot-wide riverside cave formed by wind and water erosion and by cataclysmic effects of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes. You will stand in awe of the 100-foot vertical fissure leading to the top of the entrance, forming a natural chimney that provided fire and warmth to visitors. Today, Cave-in-Rock provides more than memories of the 1962 classic movie. The 204-acre state park allows camping, hiking, fishing and boating. There also is abundant wildlife, including deer, raccoon, opossum and the occasional bald eagle. Shawnee National Forest and Garden of the Gods are a short drive down the road. Or take the Cave-in-Rock Ferry across the Ohio River to Marion, Kentucky to visit the many small Amish shops. How to reach Cave-in-Rock? From I-57, exit at Marion, Illinois, on Highway 13 East. Proceed through Marion and Harrisburg to the intersection of Illinois Route 1 and Highway 13. Turn south on Route 1 and drive 22 miles to Cave-in-Rock.

A very nice hole along the River.

It is such a beautiful place to visit. You have to go and learn the history that actual Pirates used this cave. Unfortunately it was flooded and we could not go in. The rock formations around it are so beautiful to look at.
