This small museum flies somewhat under the radar, but it has a world-famous collection. It's on the University of Chicago campus just across the street from Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House. In the first half of the 20th century the University's Oriental Institute, funded by John D Rockefeller, led excavations in Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Palestine and Egypt and brought home treasures including important neolithic and bronze age artifacts and some truly monumental sculptures from Assyria, Babylon and Persepolis. The collection is housed in a beautiful art deco building (thanks again to John D) and is very well displayed and interpreted. A short (1.5 hour) visit and extremely worthwhile.

Like most people I know, we find ancient Near Eastern history and civilizations the most fascinating! Mesopotamian (Sumerian/Akkadian (Assyrian-Babylonian)) and Persian history is our passion, especially the former as it is SO rich and complex. We know an Assyriologist from London who showers us with respective knowledge, and to see some of it in person at this museum was quite something else. I spend most of my 2 hours in the Mesopotamian (Sumero-Assyro-Babylonian) rooms. The rest were interesting, and all had overlaps of Assyrian history (like Persian empire, Anatolia, and Egypt), which made it so much richer and complex. HIGHLY recommend if you appreciate antiquity and historical, archaeological and scientific findings of the cradle of civilization (Mesopotamia) and subsequent rich civilizations (Egypt, Persia, Anatolia).

Guidebooks for Chicago all list the "big five" (the Art Institute, the Shedd, the Adler, the Field, and the MSI) but neglect this hidden gem. The University of Chicago's Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (formerly the Oriental Institute) is physically small, but houses a major collection of artifacts from the university's many archaelogical expeditions.

A friend and I both enjoyed our visit here and could have stayed much longer. For me, it was a second visit, but for her, the first. The museum suggests 2 hours for a visit, but my friend (who has a serious interest in the archaeology of the Near East) spent that amount of time on the first room alone. Be prepared!

Highlights for all include the enormous reliefs in the Assyrian room, especially the 40-ton relief of a winged bull with a human head, the huge statue of King Tutankhamen in the Egyptian gallery, and the 10-ton bull's head in the Persian Gallery. When I last visited, there was a bench in the Assyrian room, and just sitting on it let me feel how impressive its enormous reliefs were.

Although the building is small, the museum didn't feel cramped, and everything was laid out in a way that made the displays accessible. Among the smaller items, I spotted the fragments of tablets with the Gilgamesh epic easily, and appreciated the cylinders and small statues relating to the story nearby. I also found the cases with small amulets and scarabs fascinating.

This is obviously a museum of special importance to those interested in history, archaeology, and/or the Near East. Depending on the children, it could be, though, a good place to take a family. Children may be bored by broken pieces of crockery, but would be amazed by the giant bulls. My first visit was when I was a teenager, and I found myself looking for the displays (like the amulets) that had impressed me decades ago.

Admission is free, though donations are requested. The Institute is less than a mile from the Museum of Science and Industry, but walking between the two is probably not for those who don't know their way around Chicago. Limited street parking is available. We lucked into a spot close to the institute, but we had to wait a few minutes for its current occupant to pull out!

A hidden gem on the campus of the University of Chicago, this museum is incredible. The collection includes artifacts from Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, and Egypt. Descriptions and the history of each artifact are clear and easy to read. The exhibits are well presented. It is also FREE! Definitely going back this summer.

This is a lovely museum on the University of Chicago campus, it makes a good combined trip for the DuSable Black History Museum.
It's packed with exhibits and information, and not crowded at all. I spent about 2 hours here. Shame it didn't even have the most rudimentary coffee corner, though, that would have been ideal to give your feet a rest between the rooms.

Newly renamed the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, this hidden gem was established in 1919, is the University of Chicago's interdisciplinary research center for ancient Near Eastern studies and archaeology museum. It was founded for the university by professor James Henry Breasted. It conducts research on ancient civilizations throughout the Near East, including at its facility, Chicago House, in Luxor, Egypt. The institute also publicly exhibits an extensive collection of artifacts related to ancient civilizations and archaeological discoveries at its on-campus building in Hyde Park, Chicago. According to anthropologist William Parkinson of the Field Museum, the ISAC's highly focused "near Eastern, or southwest Asian and Egyptian" collection is one of the finest in the world.

This small museum far exceeded my expectations. Had to admit that I found the term "Oriental" a little confusing, as the numerous items on display were mostly from the Middle East and Egypt, with a smaller display of Roman statues.

The items were all stunningly displayed with good captions. There were only six other visitors there so it made me feel very select.

This was a real highlight of my visit to this city, and was only a five minute walk from the famous Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House.

Loved our visit to the Oriental. The exhibits are beautifully displayed and curated. Small enough to thoroughly enjoy each piece and to learn about each of the cultures. Often the pieces on exhibit are real treasures, with lesser pieces also displayed in cases. One of our favorite museum experiences in Chicago. A real jewel.

We were visiting our son who is attending grad school at the Univ. of Chicago and as he was showing us campus he said--"you've got to see the OI!" I was like, okay, what's the OI? He took us to the Oriental Institute and we were blown away! Admission is by donation so anyone can go in regardless of means and the displays of ancient Far Eastern artifacts is phenomenal. Most was collected by professors at the university pre-World War II or donated. There is an abundance of Sumerian and Persian artifacts and excellent examples of cuneiform writing as well as ancient texts.
Most impressive was the complete coffin, sarcophagi and mummy on display.

This was awesome. It’s not a large museum at all. Quite small actually. But each piece has a narrative. You have to start with the first window, read the description, then move on to the next. Read everything you see. Take your time and don’t skip any. If you do, it will take you on a journey of written language and mathematics from thousands of years BC to the near present. To actually see the clay tablets with cuneiform written millennia ago about mundane things transports you back to that primitive time, and the overall experience becomes quite magical if you let it. My favorite was the clay tablet with a student’s math homework from 2000 B.C. Funny thing is that he got the math problem wrong. Guess we didn’t evolve that much after all.
Plan to spend at least 2 hours here and then leave with your feet hurting but your minds flying high. This one is a must see again on our next trip.
