The Bridgehouse Museum is located in one of four classic structures that "guard" each end of the bridge on Michican Avenue as it crosses the Chicago River. Each structure is decorated with sculpture. Their height is deceptive at street level because Wacker Drive is elevated. The "house" on the east side of Wacker and Michigan contains the river museum that is entered at the lower level along the river. Unfortunately, it was closed today in preparation for upcoming Halloween festivities, but one was still able to enjoy the impressive structures. In fact, the evening before, they stood out even more sharply with all the night lighting along the river and streets.

A Gem of a Museum. It not only provides interesting information about the workings of the many bridges that span the Chicago River, it also provides a really interesting explanation of the growth of the city, and how water quality and waste disposal needs were effected by growth and then managed. As we toured parts of the Chicago later in our visit, what we learned in this little museum enriched our experience. Doesn't take long and is worth the time.

The Chicago River Museum (located inside the McCormick Bridgehouse) provides an Interesting history of the Chicago River since colonial times. It's located along the River Walk, so it's another interesting item to see if you're walking its length. Different rooms (there are 5 stacked on top of each other) cover different periods of history, and how the Chicago River contributed each.

See the mechanical lift gears (on the lowest level) was interesting; considering Chicago has so many of these lift bridges. Also interesting was hearing more about the story of how the River's flow was reversed to allow better removal of waste water. There are plenty of historical pictures that illustrate these stories.

Pequeño museo donde conocer cómo influyó el río en la ciudad de Chicago y la importante de aquel en esta. Nos resultó porque interesante, obsoleto y mal cuidado. Los domingos el precio de la entrada es sugerida.

What a little gem this museum is. Good information giving an overview of the settlement and history of Chicago. Particularly interesting were the efforts made to clean up the severe pollution by reversing the flow of the river. Information about the bridge raising mechanism was good also. Very enthusiastic young staff.

A fascinating little museum detailing the history of the Chicago River and its bridges.

Going up 5 stories of an actual bridge house we understood what a brilliant feat of engineering these movable bridges were.

From the top there’s a great view of the river and its buildings.

Small interesting museum inside the original bridge pylon. Provides information on the workings of the bridge and the history and of the Chicago river.

While good, perhaps a little overpriced for what it is.

Have you ever stood at the corner of North Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, overlooking the Chicago River, and watched the Michigan Avenue bridge's two massive leafs soar into the sky? And then take advantage of a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore a historic landmark bridgehouse? Located at 376 North Michigan Avenue, or the southwest corner of the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, the Bridgehouse Museum is accessible at the Riverwalk level and is open to the public from 10 to 5 Thursday through Monday from May through October. Opened in 2006, the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum were designed to provide new access and understanding of the dynamic relationship between Chicago and its river. Today, the Bridgehouse Museum stands are the cultural anchor of the new Chicago Riverwalk and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the summer months. Exhibits celebrate Chicago's river and world-famous movable bridges. Visitors learn why it is important to protect the river and how to participate in its renaissance. Try to be present on bridge lift days every spring and fall, when the museum's gear room comes to life, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the giant moving gears as they lift the massive Michigan Avenue bridge leafs, allowing boat traffic to pass through the heart of Chicago. Opened to traffic in 1920, the Michigan Avenue bridge is the first double-deck, double-leaf, fixed trunnion bascule bridge ever built.

This museum is devoted to the history of the Chicago River and its raised bridges. It’s located in one of the bridge towers and includes a view of the gears and ingenious counterweight system that allow the bridge to operate. There are tiny galleries on each level with panels about the bridge, the terraforming of the river, how it became polluted and then cleaned over time. There’s more than I expected and it is free on Sundays. One star deducted for a climate change panel that notes how Chicago - where snow in April is common - will suffer from higher average temperatures that will lead to more hot summer days. Anyone trying to convince me that warmer Chicago weather would be a bad thing is pushing an agenda, not providing information.
