If you are thinking of visiting to see the interior:
It is gorgeous. It is almost too much to imagine that blue collar workers pulled together to offer up this space for worship over 100 years ago. If you are interested in the architecture of American churches, you will love this one. Don't be content with viewing pictures. You really have to walk in the place to experience it properly.
If you are thinking of attending a worship service:
Although on a previous visit we attended services downtown, we had to come to Our Lady of Sorrows this time to see what made everyone love it so. From the photos, it could have been the beautiful worship space. (And it is beautiful. It feels rich and full of history inside.) It could have been that they loved getting out of the cathedral. That might be closer, because this has all the power and beauty of the cathedral while feeling very much like a parish (which it is) full of dedicated people (which it is) who want you to come be part of their community (they certainly seem to want to share that blessing with you). Actually, it probably is the people. We were welcomed by clergy and parishioners from the moment we crossed the threshhold. They didn't just vaguely say hello. The priest knew we were new. (If you are looking for a home parish, it's nice to know that the priest knows his flock well enough to be sure of that.) The ladies in the pew behind us helped with a teen's runaway sweater. The hugs and handshakes felt really welcoming.
Some other reviews had notes about the neighborhood, but on a summer Sunday, it felt safe and lovely to head down the sidewalk with the whole family, including teens.

Advice: drive. We rode the train and walked. It's was snowing and in winter. But I was scared for my and my wife's lives. A beautiful basilica, accomadating staff and clergy. A definite trip worth being martyred for.

I attended Our Lady of Sorrows elementary school from the second grade through eighth grade graduation. Every school day prior to the commencement of classes we would attend Mass at OLS. As a child I would stare up at the magnificent art work on the ceiling , counting the tiles as if counting sheep, somewhat bored , somewhat awed.
As the the years went slowly by I began to appreciate the works of art, the carvings, the stained glass windows , the side alters, the way of the Cross , and many statues of Holy figures. There were Novenas every Friday in those days and people came from all over to attend a Novena. The mass in those days was said in Latin and the responses by the attendees was also in Latin. I can still hear the sounds of the Priest singing in Latin ringing in my ears. I still remember the Latin words that we sang in response. As a boy , I was confirmed by the ROMAN Catholic Cardinal of Chicago , Cardinal Samuel Stritch. So many memories of time spent in that Church, going to Mass, Confession , Confirmation etc.
Somewhere along the way I fell in love with the beauty of the architecture of the Church.
I love to visit Churches whenever I travel. From the tiny Catholic Church of Mission San Xavier del Bac, Tucson, Arizona to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, Argentina , where I shook hands after Easter Mass with the then Cardinal of Buenos Aires , now known as Pope Francis. I love Church architecture. It all started with the beautiful Basilica on the west side of Chicago. I went back there in October , 2015 to attend a mass. Naturally , memories came flooding back. Our Lady of Sorrows , one of the most beautiful Catholic Churches ever built. If ever in Chicago it is one Church you must visit. There is usually street parking available.

I came here on Saturday, April 30th, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this church's elevation to the title of Basilica by Pope Pius XII. As soon as I entered, I though I was in Italy! Believe me, I own and operate a Catholic Pilgrimage apostolate! Visiting grand and historical churches and shrines is a great part of my business!
All the artwork (statues, paintings, architecture, etc) is magnificent! They even have a full size replica of Michelangelo's Pieta! The main Altar is spectacular but so are also the lateral Altars! You can't believe you are in the USA! God bless all people who built this church long ago and those who maintain it today! What a work of love that still remains super impressive today! This is a cultural must see!! If you are a Christian, this place has the added bonus of being a most formidable place of prayer!

The architects of this spectacular building, inside and out, were Henry Engelbert, John F. Pope and WiIliam J. Brinkman. It was built 1890-1902. On January 8, 1956, the church received the honorific title of Minor Basilica from Pope Pius XII who in his Apostolic Proclamation declared it the "foremost Church in America and most important Church in populous Chicago teeming industrial center is the Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows." It was in this Church, in 1937, that the Sorrowful Mother Novena started and quickly spread to 2000 other churches in the US and around the world. At its peak in 1938 there were 38 services every Friday attended by some 70,000 people.
