I used to come here as a kid for the Labor Day festival. I haven’t been here in 30 years (1992), and I was happy to come back. I was a bit smaller back then, and the park was a bit bigger. Now it’s a bit smaller and I’m a bit bigger. The cafe was still open and the bait shop was closed because of a lack of workers. When I was a kid there was a zip line here, and I was sad to see it was taken down. I’m sure some guy in Nebraska got hurt on a public zip line which ruined it for us all. Overall it was great to come back and see the state park.

We take our RV and then I ride the bike, go boating, occasionally eat at the dockside cafe, walk, and visit with other campers. There is a kids discovery play area. The small nature place is interesting when it's open. We used to take our grandkids camping until they outgrew spending so much time with us. We have pontoon boat docked there, so family joins us to go boating. My husband loves to go boating and fishing. I tag along.

Park used to be the sight of a wonderful flea market amongst the trees. False claims by environmentalist fringe caused the demise of this a few years ago. Now it is held in an open field, no shade, rough ground & no attendance. Only my opinion, but those pine trees have stood tall and proud for years & I think one weekend a year of people walking though them certainly would not cause the environmental disaster foretold by the tree hugger faction. Why have a park with a tree forest and not be able to use it.?

The park is very large, it takes some time just to drive the loop. The roads are very smooth, but the terrain is very hilly. Restroom are compost-style without sinks, and placed pretty strategically around the park, so you won't ever be that far from one. Garbage was contained in bins. The showers are only open for half the year, I don't think there's any potable water on-site.
It gets very dark at night, and the stars are very beautiful. The lake is also beautiful, and quite a few people fish and boat, though swimming isn't allowed.
Campsites are honestly a bit expensive for what they are.. and the park gets a little repetitive (it's big, but almost indistinguishable from itself) for lengthy visits.. great spot for a day hike though!

I make the trip to Argyle State Park every fall. I typically visit in October in conjunction with the fall trout release in Illinois.
Argyle SP is a typical Illinois campgroud/park. Illinois of course has issues that have little to do with the park, however, Illinois problems trickle down to the parks with poor maintenance, lack of services, etc. That said, Argyle SP has fared pretty well.
The park is quire large and has plenty of space for camping if that is what you seek. Sites are nice and big, mature trees for plenty of shade, and a variety of settings to choose from.
Many of the hiking trails are closed to hikers. I typically do not hike at this park because of the fishing that I am there for, however, I see lots of barricades restricting access to several of the trails that the park still advertises use of. That said, you may still be able to access other parts of the same trail in different areas, just be very careful.
I highly recommend Argyle Lake SP. I still think this is such a lovely setting that it is well worth the trip even if the park has fallen victim to poor state support. They still do a nice job with what they get in fees and state support.

Very nice destination in Central Illinois. Beautiful lake, pine trees and open spaces. Nice camping area and home to many special events.

The dump station is not working, the shower house is closed because of mold and leaking roof. The trails are no kept open and the horse trails are a mess. Most of the camp sites do not have a decent fire pit. Most of the pit toilets are full(need pumped out). The electric at the camp sites is in poor condition. Very few 50 amp sites

We have always loved going to Argyle Park. Since we need 50 amp, we usually go online at reserveamerica.com to pre-register. This time, though, we drove up the registrar and was able to get a spot without reservations.
Currently 2016, the state of Illinois has not funded it for repairs, yet this is not a detriment for us with a modern camper. I love that there is so many places to bicycle or walk. The trails are nicely arranged around the campgrounds. A friendly staff at check in were really helpful. The quaint cafe by the lake has great food. There is also a Native American area and a natural garden with life size wall carving of area birds, such as the Bald Eagle. There are many shelters and also an old fashion outdoor chapel. We are planning a large family reunion for three days at Argyle. It will be grand. Now, if the state of Illinois would only open their pocket book and make some minor yet needed repairs, it would be fantastic.

Clean, green and full of wildlife, Argyle Lake State Park is a great oasis in an ocean of corn! Camping, hiking, boating and fishing fun for everyone!

They have recently redone all of the roads and areas around the park. Very nice get away for some quite. Has fishing with a boat ramp and there is a small restaurant/ bait shop/ boat rental.

Dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on a leash, are up to date on shots, and you clean up their poop and take it with you when you leave. There are some areas that are off limits and are posted. I would check with the park office to be sure because some of the camping areas they are not allowed.

as long as you keep it on a leash and clean up it's poop and take it with you when you leave. There are some areas where dogs are not allowed and are posted and they must be up to date on all shots. There are special rules for horses brought in for trail rides. When in doubt I would check with the park office.
