It looks nice
Located in the middle of the town along the Rock River in the President's Park. It looks nice but when I was there it was closed and no information was posted when it will be open or if it is ever open .

Good find!

The cabin and statue sit right on the river side. It’s quite beautiful. However behind it are fast food restaurants and lots of businesses and traffic. Not what I was expecting. BUT it is well kept and still a really cool find!

Replica cabin on site of old military post
2019年6月 • 独自旅游
Fort Dixon was established on this site on the Rock River in May 1832 during the very short Black Hawk War. Because of its central location between Fort Dearborn (Chicago), Fort Clark (Peoria), and Fort Armstrong (Rock Island), it was the headquarters for General Henry Atkinson, commander of U.S. forces during that war. Other soldiers stationed here who achieved later notoriety (three as president) included Winfield Scott, Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis, and Abraham Lincoln.

Speaking of Lincoln, there is a nice bronze statue here of Lincoln as a soldier (the only statue of him in military garb) during the Black Hawk War, along with an interesting bronze plaque that describes his service during that conflict.

The cabin was built in 1894 as "a lasting tribute to the area's early settlers." It was originally located at another site, but was moved here in 1969. It is open on weekends and during Independence Day week for the Dixon Petunia Festival. Sadly, we were not here during either of those times, but then we were more interested in the Lincoln statue.

Another great landmark in Dixon.....

My wife and I were doing the "Dixon Tour" for a fun Sunday trip to the Dixon area. Picked up many sites, this being one of them. The cabin would have been neat to see inside although not on this trip! Tightened up like a drum. With the cobwebs on the doors, who knows how long it has been since entry has been made. Very neat cabin nonetheless. Also, it was nice to see the statue of Lincoln on the same property. How cool it would be to go back in time and live in that history in the making.

State of Abraham Lincoln as a young man, a soldier (during Blackhawk War)

This reconstructed settlers cabin and the Lincoln statue are on the waterfront at the North side of the Rock River in Dixon (just West of Route 26). Lincoln was elected as the leader of his group of soldiers, but the never saw a battle. As president he was asked about his experience in the Blackhawk War and he said his unit had many bloody battles with mosquitoes. There is a smaller reproduction of this statue (along with other similarly scaled-down reproductions of statues of Lincoln) at the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois.

Some history in here

Located in a park very near the river , this home was transported here many years ago. The family still has an interest in keeping it's history alive. There are people dressed in time period clothing telling stories of the home and people who once lived there.
A nice find in such small town.

Lincoln as a Young Soldier
2016年3月 • 好友
The biggest attraction of this site will be the Lincoln statue. It is very rare to find a Lincoln statue of him prior to his Senate bid, but this one is of him as a soldier in the Black Hawk War. Lincoln's service was short and unremarkable, but this statue is still a must see for any Lincoln-lover.

The cabin itself was built in the late 1800s but placed at this location in the late 1960s as a tribute to early settlers. It is located on the former site of Fort Dixon but is not original to the site. I've been told that the cabin itself is open on certain days of the year, but I have been unable to find any schedule to indicate if that is true and when those days would be.

If you find yourself in Dixon and appreciate Lincoln, go see. The site also has good views of the Rock River so it may also be worth going to see for that as well.

Lincoln the Warrior

See Lincoln as you've never seen him before - as a young soldier during the Black Hawk War. His first and only military experience. This small park on the north side of the river was the original site of Fort Dixon build during that war. The Old Settler's Cabin was built in 1894 as a tribute to the early pioneers in the area. Visit the park, stretch your legs and take in some of the local history.

Historic location with many notables passing through.

Located on the north side of the Rock River in Presidents Park along a nice river walking path, immediately off of Illinois Route 2 in downtown Dixon. This is the only statue ever made which depicts Abraham Lincoln as a young soldier. The statue was done by Leonard Crunelle and shows Lincoln as a 23 year old volunteer in the Black Hawk War of 1832. Dedicated in 1930, the statue sits on ground which was named Fort Dixon during the war.

While currently known as Dixon, Illinois, the town was named Dixon's Ferry at the time of the construction of the fort. On May 22, 1832, Fort Dixon was officially named as a base by General Henry Atkinson.

Because the site was centrally located between Fort Dearborn, Fort Armstrong, and Fort Clark, General Atkinson established Fort Dixon as his command post. Additionally, the Illinois militia used the ferry to transport troops and supplies across the river.

Many notable soldiers served at Fort Dixon, including Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Winfield Scott, and Zachary Taylor. Lincoln, Davis and Taylor were at the Fort at the exact same time during the Blackhawk War.
