The Benjamin Stephenson House is the oldest brick house in Edwardsville, Illinois, near St. Louis. It is considered significant for its architectural beauty and its association with important Illinois figures of the past. Located at 409 South Buchanan Street, along one of the busiest stretches of Illinois Route 159, the Federal-style house was built in 1820 by Benjamin Stephenson, a prominent Edwardsville citizen and Illinois politician. He died shortly after the home's completion and it had 15 subsequent owners, including a college fraternity and the city of Edwardsville. Originally designed as a two-story rectangular building with four square rooms, the interior and exterior walls are of three course thick brick. The exterior is composed of 100,000 bricks, all of which were made on the property. Each of the four rooms, two on the first floor and two on the second floor, are 18 feet by 18 feet square and contain fireplaces. The central hallway, which contains the home's staircase, is seven feet wide and stretches in a "Southern manner" from the front to the back of the house. The staircase is made of red cypress and features ornately carved woodwork. While the 20-foot-by-20-foot detached kitchen behind the house was torn down in 1845, a two-story 20-foot-by-40-foot wing was added to alter the house's appearance into an ell pattern. Also, a 13-foot wide veranda was attached to the wing's south side. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

They did an excellent job of restoring the house to 1820 conditions. We'll furnished with period pieces. The staff was very knowledgeable and presented well.

On a Saturday afternoon visit to Edwardsville, my family took a guided tour of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House. Our guides, who were dressed in period clothing, were experts at explaining what life might have been like in that area in 1820. (The 184-acre farm is now in the heart of Edwardsville and occupied by a major road, many businesses and a residential area.) The tour begins with a 15-minute introductory film about the Stephenson family. It then moves outside to a separate brick building that is a replica of the once-attached kitchen had two women in it making beeswax candles. We learned that volunteers are almost always making candles, baking bread, stringing beans, or doing one of the many chores that would have been done in 1820. The home remains quite functional, especially during the holidays. It's the only historic home I've been in that allows visitors to sit on the furniture and try on the clothes. For $6, this tour is a bargain!

Privately funded non-profit well appointed historic home. Docent led tours. Women's circle hand stitch all garments. Decor true to period. Check in advance for special demonstrations of candle making, cooking, artistries. The Stephenson's lived quiet well for the time and area in which they resided.

We just thought we would wander through this historic home at our own pace. However, the guided tour was very informative, as the docents were knowledgeable, yet casual and friendly which made the tour fun and targeted to our historical interests. The buildings are beautifully restored with period furnishings. Highly Recommend!!

A very informative two hour guided tour. We enjoyed learning the history of the home and the family. The tour guides were excellent. Well worth the trip and tour fee. Friendly and welcoming staff.

Step back in time and see what the early days of living in Edwardsville looked like. Look at the period clothes and furniture and see what our ancestors had to deal with. Great tour.

The Benjamin Stephenson house in Edwardsville is a unique tourist attraction. My kids love this place and have gone on several tours with their schools. It's a step back in time to see how things were so long ago. The staff dresses in period clothing and is extremely knowledgeable about the time. I highly recommend a visit!
