It was hard to find the beach area, but we did and were able to enjoy it.
There were dogs with no leash on a couple occasions, but they seemed friendly.
A sign to keep dogs on a leash at all times might help

We just had a fishing triip on Lake Sara this last weekend. Some friends took us out on their fishing boat. We took time also to see some of the beautiful homes there and some under construction. Great way to spend a relaxing day!

Found a one bedroom mobile home at the Lake Sara campground for a last minute getaway. Rented a pontoon boat from Larson's Landing. Nice lake with some beautiful homes. They also have a small beach to go swimming since swimming is prohibited while boating.

Take your boat or rent a boat at the marina. Lake Sara is comparatively small with waterfront that is both natural and developed. Cruise all the inlets to see stunning lake homes. The lake side of these homes are like showcases. Almost every home has their own matching "pimped out" boat house/dock used for outdoor entertaining. You simply must see it to believe there is a place like this hidden in Effingham, Illinois. There is also two restaurants located on the lake.

Rented the cox cottage, stayed on lake for 4 days. My wife and 3 year old, and my in - laws and some other aunts and uncles. Wife’s family is from Effingham, and the lake is not far from town. The lake is narrow. We went sunday through Thursday and only saw 5 other boats on the water the whole time, but neighbors said it gets really congested on the weekends. The water was good, we had a floating island that we anchored off our dock, we fished,kayaked, rented a boat at larson’s Landing “whole other story”. It is a small, narrow lake, so when boats go through the waves hit each side. It is lined with a bunch of mostly expensive houses with expensive boat docks. You can NOT swim from your boat. If you ski or tube you must have an orange or white hat on. We had a good time, but next time we will be going a lilttle further to a bigger lake Shelbyville. A little bit of fun, on a small lake.

I had never been on Lake Sara until I purchased a house there in 1999. During the past 20 years I have had wonderful experiences on the lake. I like that they don't allow Jet Ski personal watercraft and wish they didn't allow wake board type boats because the narrow lake is not suitable for the large wake generated by these boats. Generally during the week, there are only a few boats on the lake and it is very pleasant. You can go whatever speed you want and enjoy the ride. On the three summer holidays, the lake gets busy and it loses its charm due to the waves and rough water. Good fishing, no swimming from boats, only docks, the west end of the lake is always quiet and peaceful. The conservation police do a good job keeping the boating public safe.

Yes, there is camping and other homes to rent on this wonderful lake. Cardinal Cove Retreat has all 5 star ratings and sleeps up to 12.
