This is a small park with a lot of signs and a stature. But it’s a big part of American history. I like that we preserve places like this. It’s interesting to stand where the debate took place.

It is an interesting park. There is a nice statue and plenty of signage so you can learn about the history and talking points of the debates. Parking is nearby and the visit is free.

For anyone interested in Lincoln history or United States history, a 15 minute stop at the park in Freeport is a necessity. Besides the statues, there are a number of plaques which describe the momentous day in 1858 when the Illinois Senate debate took place. Beyond that, you can also sense how history changed because of this debate. Nicely done and easy parking on street or at adjacent library.

Beautiful display and tribute of the Lincoln Douglas debate.
This is the second location that I have visited. Lovely statues, nice signplex displaying different events, and beautiful trees.
Also, right next to the ice cream shop which is a plus.

Learned so much from the plaques around this small courtyard. Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt were both there at one time.

Takes 10 minutes to view the handful of displays and read the various plaques. Next to Union Dairy so a quick refreshment after your viewing of the square is in order.

Not much to see but it's a cool spot to stand on history. Close your eyes and imagine the olden days. The crowd and the wild west feeling.

I took a quick walk around the Debate Square. I appreciated the signage that helped put the debate in perspective. 10 minute stop.

It’s great Freeport has preserved the history of a famous Lincoln- Douglas debate which occurred there in 1858. Seversl well-written interpretive signs are placed in the park-like block where the debate happened. An excellent life-size sculpture of both men depicting a moment in the debate brings history to life. I especially liked the interpretive signs where a button can be pushed to hear a re-enactment of key exchanges during the debate. Hearing words exchanged between Lincoln and Douglas reminded me ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’, especially when it comes to politics. Next to debate square, you can enjoy a great ice cream treat at Union Dairy, a fun, old-timey soda fountain.
