Scenic Views, Unmarked Trails
We decided to visit Casper Bluff while trying to take up time before our hotel check in. It's a really beautiful location. At first I thought we were on private property as the entry road is narrow, dirt and runs next to a farm but keep going and you'll reach the destination. We didn't walk the trails far as we began to notice there were no trail markings and we forgot to take a picture of the trail map at the beginning (please do this so you'll have something to reference). Overall the scenic views were wonderful and were the only people there at the time which make it even more peaceful. Make sure you have good shoes as the grass trails are lumpy with divots and sometimes on a slant which made for a more attentive walk than anticipated. Even without the trail markings, I'd still recommend checking this place out. I just wish we made it to the Thunderbird time.

Cool for the archaeology buff
Fascinating history of local Native American tribes and interesting effigy, only Thunderbird effigy in Illinois. Short walk, hilly, mostly wooded, overlooking the Mississippi River basin.

Nice hiking....... Poor trail markings
This is not your typical trail hiking area. Pretty much wide open with minimal tree shade. The paths are mowed grass in prairie grass/vegetation. At the trail head/parking is a map that supposedly lays out the various trails. Not so much. Since there are so many mowed areas that cross each other it is difficult to find where you want to go. I would suggest staff install some posts with color coordinated signs that coordinate with the trail markings at the trail head. Other than poor trail markings the area is very pretty, quiet, and serene..... a great place to walk .

Gorgeous views and trails
We were SO glad we drove the couple miles south of downtown to this beautiful park. We were treated to 100s of American pelicans(we think) floating on the Mississippi River air currents. We walked our leashed dog through the trails of wild flowers. It was just gorgeous.

Grass trails are not trails!
We were excited to go to a walking path/trail with a view of the Mississippi River. Casper Bluff appeared to be the only place nearby that had that view.

When we arrived, we checked the information board that had a map of the trails. There was nothing to take with you, so I took a picture of the board. There were several different trails with names, but unfortunately there were no markings in the preserve, so even with the picture on my phone, it was very difficult to decipher which trail was which.

The other reason we had difficulty finding the right trail is because the paths were mowed grass, and not even mowed that low. There were some places that looked like marked trails that weren't. We were expecting dirt, gravel, asphalt or something hard and distinguishable, but it was just grass. I also felt like it contributed to more bugs being around. There were these crazy bugs looking like mini-dragonflies that would stalk and chase us, and continually try to land on our body and clothes. Yeah, I sound pathetic, but I didn't like it.

When we finally found the right path that goes closest to the Mississippi, we were happy to see that we could go to a paved path! However there is only one way in and one way out of that path by foot unless you want to walk miles. In addition, the river view was just of the retention areas of the river, not the actual Mississippi, so it wasn't very pretty.

I'm sure there are nature lovers and other people who would really enjoy this reserve, but for my wife and I who were just looking for a scenic place to walk, it was a disappointment.

Beautiful place for a long walk.
Visited this bluff/preserve area hoping to see Thunderbird Effigy but without proper signage we had no idea how far it was or what to look for. I love that the Galena Territory path ways are wide but the only signs we saw were 2 small arrows nailed to a 12 inch piece of wood. I imagine if you make it to the lookout point the view of the Mississippi River must be amazing. And if the effigy can be viewed that would be spectacular and a blessing given its Native American heritage. Maybe on the next trip there will be better signage or better yet an app that lays out the trails and history.

Due to snow, trails were ones that others started.
Good for hiking short distances. Very few people out on a cold mid-week morning in January. Not sure about groomed trails.

Disappointed. Not as described in brochure. Tiny Dirt road to get there- thought I was going up a farm lane. Walked a while on trail then turned around and headed to the car. Never saw river or much else interesting.

A relaxing, summer stroll
We walked this trail from both trailheads. It's about 5 miles one way. It's a very pleasant walk. Starting at the south trailhead is better (a bit more scenic). There is a marshy area you pass (just beyond the railroad tracks). It's a nice place to walk the dog, too.

If I could give this a zero I would.
Trails were maintained and that’s about it.
The provided map didn’t match the trails and there was numbering that wasn’t indicated on the provided map.

We followed the trails- ended up on a driveway off of the map and gave up.

There needs to be a better map and marking system (maybe have it match might be a good idea) - Indian burial mounds are supposed to have some kind of indicator- some have rocks. Having some sort of indication of where the heck you are besides arrows pointing at each other (Alice in Wonderland, anyone)

Not sure what we saw w this - it must have been a mound but nothing on the map showed a #2

The park was very poorly planned out and it’s obvious that someone had a very good time larking about on their John Deere mower.

Total disappointment.
