Very nice restaurant with a nice park, a good fall drive along the bluffs.

Small museum in the visitor center. The main Lodge has a nice dining room. Great food and good service during these
COVID times of not enough help.

Great Hiking!
2021年8月 • 好友
My husband and I finally got a chance to come out and hike here and we loved it. There’s some great elevation gains (for Illinois anyway) and you’ll get some nice views of the river from McAdam’s Peak. We picked a two mile trail and it took us just about an hour to complete with stopping to take photos and admire the nature. There’s lots of parking and it appears to be relatively empty on weeknights, we didn’t see any other hikers. Can’t wait to go back!

LOTS of territory
2021年7月
Stayed at the lodge, which was first rate exprience. Biked the trail into Grafton (surprising up and downs, great scenery along the river), and did the scenic road. Unfortunately hazy out, so views were limited from the bluffs. 8000 acre park has a lot to offer.

Fatherly advice for Pere Marquette
2021年6月
First time visitor to Illinois state parks. The great rivers are the real attraction. I mean, huge! No wonder the ancients a 1000 years ago flocked here, with Cahokia near STL America's "first city" of up to 30,000 inhabitants with only stone and wood to work and build giant mounts.

As for the park:
PRO:
* Relatively small but level sites, elec only
* Huge shade trees
* Quiet at night
* Nearby Grafton a hoot. Try turtle soup and catfish.
* The CCC built lodge and its cabins impressive
CON:
* No ranger check-in; just a camp host - with a sign DRUNK CAMPERS MATTER. Huh?
* Google Maps sent us into the boonies. Ranger saved us saying he finds "9-10" lost campers every day due to this. DON'T USE GOOGLE MAPS!
* Zero-one bar wifi. With hellacious tstorms imminent sure could have used that. Boo!
* With so many campers now pulling megarigs it seems bathhouse hygiene and amenities are no longer prioritized. 30sec spurt showers took forever to heat up, especially in afternoon. They back down heaters then? pfft. Rusted stalls.

Outdoor Wonders
2021年4月 • 家庭
We fished, we hiked, we spotted the eagles flying over the Illinois River. Life is very good and so are the hiking trails in the park. But if you’re not a hiker, there are good roads to take you up to the scenic viewpoints and safely down again.

Great day trip

Beautiful park, some fun hiking. Some short but uphill climbs lead to a beautiful Vista. The visitors center was nice and the two guys working on the pond were extremely nice.

Not what we expected

This lodge at one time was beautiful. With that being said we stayed there a few weeks ago and it has gone downhill something terrible. Nothing is open not even the hot tub. The indoor pool had clothes and kids toys around the pool area but all of the towels had holes in them, I’m assuming the staff brings their kids to use the pool. The web site tells you none of this information it’s just a surprise once you check in that the restaurant, winery, hot tub, and even morning coffee is all closed. The rooms could use a deep clean.

Great get away during the pandemic, close to St. Louis
2020年11月
We went to this very hilly forest of luminescent golden trees during the Covid19 pandemic just to get away from St. Louis for a day. The visitor's center was locked contrary to the October reviews here. Not sure if that was due to recent new restrictions in Illinois or because it was presidential election day, 2020. Trails are well marked with both different colors and symbols, so they're "color-blind" friendly. The ones we went on (Goat Cliff and South Hickory) were accurately described as moderately difficult: some very steep portions, some level, some tree root obstacles, some muck with considerately placed stepping stones. Moderate number of people, some wearing masks. Saw a few people with walking sticks which would be a good idea if you've got any balance issues or if like one long legged runner who passed us with poles, you're traveling at deer speed. The right amount of exercise for us (fit and 60's). There were also some easier and shorter trials if that's more to your liking. It's also a lovely drive along the bluffs of the Mississippi river to get there. No real scenic overlooks on the hikes we chose.

Plenty of choices for things to do
2020年10月
After touring the visitor center, we decided to take the scenic drive around the park. Many of the lookout points have an obstructed view, but this probably changes once all the leaves have fallen.
We also walked through the lodge. It's worth a quick tour.

Charming state park
2020年10月
This park is located on the Illinois Great River Road, roughly an hour out of St Louis. It is a beautiful park, right off of the Illinois River. The park consists of a visitors center, a conference center/lodge, a scenic drive, equestrian trails, and more. The visitor center was ok, with restrooms, some exhibits, and an information desk. Outside there is a little pond for "catch and release" fishing only. The lodge and conference center looked impressive to me, with chess and checker sets in the lobby and Connect 4 as well. The dining area seemed pretty big. The scenic drive was nice, not spectacular but worth it. We were there on a beautiful day in mid-October, and the fall foliage had started but was not that impressive. Overall, a nice park and worth a visit.
