This is a magical place.
The dedicated staff and volunteers have made a comfortable and loving home for many creatures who could not survive on their own in the wild.
Plan to visit both the indoor and outdoor exhibits. If you are fortunate enough to arrive at bird feeling/training time, you are in for a treat, And so are the raptors -- although theirs are frozen-and-then-thawed mice and rats, chicks, rabbits, and quail.
Expect to see turtles, a coyote, a fox, owls, an eagle, snakes, a Komodo dragon (who will soon be moving into the tank vacated by the traveling otter), etc. And of course, overweight Boris the bobcat.
See my earlier reviews ( April 17, 2020, December 26, 2019; June 14, 2019; June 2, 2018; September 2, 2016: and October 14, 2013) for more details.

We had a great time here in July of 2017. The staff was kind and helpful and informative! They treated both the animals and Humans with great care. We got to see them feeding Bob the Bob Kit and Arty the armadillo.
My daughter and I went there as a day trip while in town for her husband’s Navy graduation.
She was pregnant at the time with her first child we had to walk a ways on the paths but, it was worth it.
We had a good time and got up real close to all the animals. It was kept clean and we were able to see the reptiles in the amphibians and quite a few more things!

The animals appear to be well cared for, and the exhibits are clean. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed watching the otter swim and play. We thought the architecture of the buildings was interesting and beautiful. We thought that there should be more signs on the cages that would identify the species.

This living natural history museum is following government guidelines and is closed until April 30. Check the Lake Forest Parks and Recreation page for updates.
Meanwhile, after the closing on March 13, the Center used its Facebook page to offer a "meet the staff" series.
Starting March 21, the curator, Rob Carmichael and other staff began an ongoing series of educational and entertaining videos with Facebook Live episodes. Colouring pages are also being posted. As someone who grew up with Marlin Perkins and Wild Kingdom, I am delighted by these family-friendly activities and encourage you to take advantage of them until the WDC re-opens.
Parks and Rec has set up a virtual recreation center that is could be a model for other communities. Follow the links on their website for a well-chosen collection of resources under the categories of "Stay Active," "Keep Learning," "Be Informed," and "Feel Connected".

See my earlier spring and fall reviews (October 14, 2013; September 2, 2016; June 2, 2018; and June 4, 2019) for more details.
The special bonus of visiting the Wildlife Discovery Center in a cold season is to see the luxuriant winter coats of the bobcat and foxes. New residents, Spartan the Arctic Fox and Jax the Red Fox, are definitely worth a visit. Jax's white-tipped tail is storybook perfect.
Cuddly Hazel the sloth is another don't-miss attraction. As is the rare komodo dragon. Speaking of komodo dragons, this might be the day to find the hysterically funny Bob and Ray komodo dragon expert interview sketch on YouTube. (You can thank me later.)
The bald eagle will be happy to pose in profile and/or to show off its impressive wingspan.
The Center is always free and always fascinating!

Once you find this place you'll come back again & again. Great for kids of all ages & adults too. Friendly, informative staff that answers all questions. You can touch huge snakes & lizzards. Outdoor exhibits closed in winter but trails for walking. Best of all, this is owned by park district & no charge, so you can come often.

They have many rescue animals and lots of reptiles, snakes, alligators. A bobcat, eagle, owl. And there’s a park next door to play on with a picnic area. Walking trails are also available.

Wonderful place for the entire family. Get an upclose look at a wide variety of animals, you might even get the chance to pet one of them. They have an inside exhibit as well as an outside one. Double check to make sure they are open before coming.

See my earlier reviews (10/14/13; 9/2/16; and 6/2/18) for more details.
The Center is open from 10 - 4 on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
You can coordinate your Friday/Saturday visits with the Elawa Farm Garden Market (8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) through October 26.
Even when the indoor exhibit center is closed, there are creatures to observe outside. The outdoor exhibits are open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Perhaps one of the employees will be taking Lincoln, the squirrel owl, for a stroll, One of Lincoln's eyes is permanently dilated -- impairing its depth perception. That makes flying -- and landing -- a problem, but you might see Lincoln, safely tethered to a handler's wrist, enjoying the sun and breezes.
Or, perhaps Boris, the resident bobcat, will be getting his meal of rats or mice.
Or perhaps you will be drawn to the majestic eagle.
If you would like to help, the Center can always use donations of:
paper towels
bleach
bath towels (gently used, no holes)
mops
cleaning supplies (simple green, scrubbers, scrapers, etc)
dawn dish soap
hand sanitizer
sponges

We carefully planned our family trip to make sure both the inside and outside exhibits were available and Fridays are clearly stated as both open! Upon arrival we were told a function was planned and all inside exhibits were closed. I pointed out that their website did not state that and the function for that day was clearly planned well in advance allowing their website to proclaim that..... they walked away!
My grandkids were very disappointed that they couldn’t see the large reptile collection I’d told them about.... but I guess that’s one of the learning center’s mission, why do a thorough job when a half assed effort is acceptable on the taxpayer’s dime!
Instead of relying on their website, I’ll call before returning......
PS. It’s an excellent resource when it’s open!
