Oldest remaining brick house in Pontiac, Illinois
2019年3月
Pontiac, Illinois, is known for high school basketball, its 1875 courthouse, the site for the 1984 movie Grandview USA, and several museums, including the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum. It also is home to the Jones House, which is architecturally significant as an excellent example of the Gothic Revival style and also is the oldest remaining brick home in Pontiac. Located at 314 East Madison Street in the central Illinois community, off I-55, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Built in 1857-1858 by John Dehner, a prominent Pontiac citizen, it was named for the owner who acquired it in 1899, Henry C. Jones, a newspaperman who later founded and served as president of Pontiac Light, Heat and Power Company. Jones lived in the house until his death in 1921. The house, which sits on a limestone foundation, is a unique, pre-Civil War design that features a steep roof with gables and pointed second-story windows that classify it as Gothic Revival in style. Owned by the Livingston County Historical Society since 1976, the Jones House is open for tours and events.

Excellent Old House Museum
2014年9月 • 家庭
The Jones House is the oldest brick home in Pontiac, Illinois. It was built in 1857-58 and is an excellent example of Gothic Revival Architecture. It was the first property in Pontiac placed on the National Historic Register in 1978. It is named after the family who lived there the longest.

The home is a survivor, owned and restored by the Livingston County Historical Society over a 12 year period to what it would have looked like in 1860-70. It is furnished with period items to represent the typical upper middle class home of the time.

The house is open for tours at least once a month - see the Pontiac Illinois tourism website for the exact schedule. Tours are conducted by volunteer docents who are members of the Historical Society and you will learn much about the house, the families that have lived there, and the early days of Pontiac.

The town operates a free tourist trolley for easy transport between the local sites. The driver does a nice verbal tour of what the city has to offer. Come out and see what this great historic small town has to offer!
