I was visiting Rockford as a daytrip on a Monday, and stopped at the Nichols Conservatory and found out that it is closed on Mondays (and half price admission fee on Tuesdays). So, instead I had the time to walk around in the beautiful Sinnissippi Riverfront Park inside which, in fact, the conservatory is located. There are a variety of impressive features in the park including the lagoon, the rose garden and several small fountains and waterfalls. A pair of white swans and several ducks were living in the lagoon. The Flower Clock is a beautiful centerpiece. Plants and trees are meticulously labeled so a visit here is very informative. The park also has a paved trail next to the Rock River and along the trail are installed large sculptures such as the Symbol and the Rock Guardians of Rockford. The trail is well maintained and is quite popular. A visit to the awesome Sinnissippi Riverfront Park is well worth the effort.

I wandered Sinnissippi Park for a few hours before going to the Conservatory. I started on the south end and walked all the way to the end of the rose garden and back. There are plenty of interesting plaques and art to see, including the Rock Men sculptures, which are impressive.
I happened to be out on a perfect Friday morning. I sat on a bench and enjoyed the mid-60's temps, sun, and the sounds of birds and the river. There were plenty of people out walking, jogging, or biking and most everyone was pleasant.

Sinnissippi offers a park setting with well established gardens indoors and out. The here is a hiking/biking trail that follows the river for about 3 miles. For a more casual walk, you can stroll through well maintained outdoor gardens. The greenhouse is definitely worth a visit of its own.

Leave the Library out the back door if it's open, or walk around to the river front, then walk North to the Whitman Street bridge, East across it, then South along the river and through the displays to the end of the park and the street which has several nice restaurants, then to the State Street bridge and West to the Library's street for a nice hour, or two stroll on a nice day!

Nice place to visit in Rockford, you can walk & sit around the pond, there are ducks in pond. If you like to bike they have a nice bike path. Seasonally the boat rides are offered by the park.

I love to come to the snow sculpture contest and see what people have created. And also during Christmas to see the light displays. Its free to drive through but they suggest for a small donation as you drive out. It does get congested so be prepared to drive slowly or if allowed, park your car and walk to see everything.

The first time I was at this park I was too young to drive. That makes it about 1960. I attended a concert at the park's band shell. My aunt and uncle loaded lawn chairs into the trunk, and we drove over. I was impressed even then by the wooded, foresty look to the park.
I've been back many times since then. Illinois 251 runs through the middle of the park. The area between Illinois 251 and the Rock River is, for the most part, flat. The area east of 251 slopes upward and road winds through stands of trees, going past the open air amphitheater (not really a band shell) enroute.

I arrived in Rockford for the first time and the first spot I was taken to was Sinnissippi to walk down the pathways and see Symbol. I actually really liked the park and thought the location was quite tranquil. It seemed like the residents really liked the area and there were a lot of people riding bikes and walking dogs.
The river walk was relaxing and seemed pretty well maintained. I feel like if I lived in Rockford, I'd probably visit this trail quite often. Definitely a good spot if you've never visited.
