Scheduled a Saturday morning tour of both the Funk Prairie Home as well as the Mineral Museum for my teenage daughter and myself. The museums are located nearby to each other, but you do need to drive out into the countryside near Shirley, IL to get there. Tours must be scheduled in advance, but there's no charge to do them.
Erin was our tour guide for the Funk Prairie Home Museum, and she did a spectacular job walking us through the house and the surrounding grounds. Erin’s knowledge of the house and the family’s history is truly impressive. It’s also impressive to learn about the Funk family’s history and how each of the members brought their own special accomplishments to the home and broader community. House is wonderfully preserved and maintained, and there’s plenty of the original furniture to help show just what things were like back then.
After the home tour, we went had a tour of the Mineral Museum with Bill, who was also very knowledgeable. Where the house was very clean and organized, the mineral museum was packed full and a little cluttered (since the collection had grown so much over the years). Despite being a little overwhelmingly full, the mineral collection was extremely impressive. There was such a wide variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, and more. Bill even mentioned that not only was this one of the largest mineral museums in the world, but other locations (e.g., the Smithsonian Institute) don’t have some of the things that this museum was able to obtain).

I have been visiting my husbands family in Illinois for many years, and this is the first year I knew about the Funk Prairie Home Museum. It was so interesting - and amazing! The Tour Guide, Bill Case, was a wealth of information - and so entertaining! So glad we decided to do the tour this year!

Having an Interest in minerals I thought that Funk Prairie Home Museum and Mineral collection would be neat. OMG So much more then I anticipated. We set up our time to have our tour and right as we pulled in Bill came out to great us. We started out with a tour of the yard and flower gardens. The whole time Bill explaining every possible knowledge you could imagine of the history of this beautiful house. Looking at him and knowing he was not around in the late 1860's you would of assumed he helped build everything. His knowledge of the grounds and of the family is amazing and the driving force that makes you feel like you know the family, their accomplishments and what this family did for our country. The house, the artifacts (family things) and the history as told makes you feel their accomplishments. Bill explaining how the interests of each person varied and each had it seems like their own individual specialties. The rooms are preserved back in time showing modest accommodations for themselves but for help on the farm having equal conditions as themselves. The visitors room was much nice then their own showing how much respect for others.
The mineral museum was amazing. Not only a big collection but minerals that today are hard to collect or are no longer able to collect. I saw some that I have never seen before.
I can't say enough about the day. Bill of course made it a great experience and he also has a helper, sorry can't remember her name, but told us she is so fantastic on the Funk family and the history. Spend a few hours or more there. It's awesome

Fascinating history. Amazingly-well-preserved house. Well worth visiting. Found the docent’s focus on how fast fossils can form to be odd and wondered if he was pushing a creationist viewpoint. He criticized public school education and said there is a low literacy rate in the US - holding up five fingers, signifying who knows what. He also dismissed the idea of the Earth running low on natural resources. Would be a better experience if docent stuck to the Funk family history and geology.

I was really nervous that my junior high students would think this was too childish, but they LOVED it!!! The mineral museum was amazing, as was the barn tour. Very engaging tour guides that are SO incredibly well-versed in their topics!

I took my 9-year-old grandson to just the gem and mineral museum tour. We both had a great time. The entire experience was very interesting, educational and enjoyable. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, good-humored, quick-witted and enthusiastic. In addition to my grandson, there was a girl about the same age in our tour group. They were both engrossed in the fossils and the mineral collection, and the tour guide did a great job getting them engaged in questions and discussion.

I first visited the Prairie Home and Gem Museum so that my jewelry designer wife could experience the excitement that others had told her this place held for lovers of gemstones. We have been to the home five times, and every time, it is an incredible visit.
The picture above is an incredible wonder of sliced gemstones glued onto a wall and back-lit. It is your greeting as you enter the gem museum.
The home part of the tour is one awe-inspiring lesson to be learned after another, as you move from room to room.
The curator there, Mr. Bill Case (I hope he is still there) was incredible. He told me he had given this tour thousands of times, yet each new tour receives an enthusiastic display like it is his very first.
BTW, the first time my wife finished this tour, she was in tears from the joy and amazement. This is the best gem and mineral museum in the nation, possibly the world. People from the Smithsonian Institute envy it.

Took a family reunion group to this museum and it was the highlight of our time together!
The guided tour is magnificent. Very knowledgeable tour guides and they speak with enthusiasm about the Funk family. Can't wait to share this with more people who visit our town. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Planning is required though. This museum only takes reservations and the minimum tour number is ONE...but you do have to call ahead.

I had heard great things about this tour but was not expecting much when I actually went. I was blown away. One of the students in our party put it best: "I just want to go home and invent electricity or something". Very interesting and inspiring. Go now!

I have lived across the US and have written dozens of reviews on TripAdvisor and this is my single favorite attraction nationwide. Make a reservation. It's a very peculiar historic house that was home to some fabulous people and inventors. Go for yourself to find out why it's so good. It's completely free.
