Visited this location with my teenage daughter on a weekday afternoon during her winter break from school. Museum had a special deal for free admission for students, so we took advantage of the discount. However, even if we didn't, prices are reasonable considering just how much this museum offers.

The permanent exhibit on the main floor is both extensive and impressive. They provide a comprehensive review of the holocaust, which starts with the a brief review of Jewish history before getting into the details of the build up to the holocaust. Most of the museum walkthrough does a really great job of moving things forward in a logical and mostly chronological fashion, so that one can see how things progressed and why. Ultimately ends with post-WWII view and how the holocaust affected things afterward. We spent a couple hours touring the main exhibit, and we could have definitely spent another hour or two to more thoroughly view and review all of the artifacts and details that they present.

We also spent another couple of hour viewing other aspects of the museum (beyond the main exhibit). We attended their interactive hologram presentation with a holocaust survivor, Fritzie Fritzshall. Presentation and interaction was both informative and very moving. We also briefly walked through some of the more temporary exhibits and took a few moments in the Hall of Reflections to truly appreciate everything we'd seen.

Thanks for the glowing review, the details of the exhibitions, and how they connected with you and your daughter. Fritzie is always moving and appreciated. It's wonderful that we had the chance to capture her story while she was active with our Museum.

I highly recommend visiting this museum if you are in the area!

I visited on a Saturday and ended up spending 7hrs reading the material, watching the videos and testimonies, and viewing the artifacts. I didn’t make it all the way through the museum and will definitely have to come back for another visit!

Thank you for preserving these artifacts and testimonies of this time in history.

The permanent exhibit is very well done and should be a required field trip for all local high schools. It is well laid out, moving and very very sad. The virtual reality show is also very well done and worth seeing. Finally, the temporary exhibit on delis is enjoyable.

This museum has a very thorough walk-through of the entire period of Jew persecution in Germany, going back to the Weimarch period, and continuing well past WWII, including the controversy in Skokie. Many testimonials by survivors, and numerous artifacts. Also had a special touring exhibition of "The Green Book". Well worth the visit.

There is no cafeteria inside.
There are vending machines in lower level with soft drinks, chocolate, snacks, etc.
There are a number of good restaurants in the nearby Old Orchard mall.
Simply keep your admission tickets and show them at the entrance when you return. Be sure to get back before 4:00 when the doors close. The museum is open till 5:00.

Currently, masks encouraged but not required.

See my earlier review (Ma 29, 2022) for more details, including the history.

I have been visiting the Holocaust Museum since its beginnings as a small store-front facility on Main Street in Skokie. I think it was a dentist's office before that.

The original building is still standing and I marvel every time I drive by at the concept of "The Little Museum That Could" -- now the third largest holocaust museum in the world. Yes, you read that right -- in the world.

Here's the back story:
Neo-nazis attempted to march in Skokie in 1978 but were stopped by a last-minute court injunction. The attempted Skokie March galvanized a group of local Shoah survivors who knew that the strongest weapon against bigotry is education.

They rented office space on Dempster and eventually moved into the Main Street location in 1984. School groups came to visit and a speakers bureau was established to reach those who couldn't visit in person.
'
They raised funds for the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising memorial which was erected in 1987 on the Village Green between the Skokie Public Library and the Village Hall. There are ashes from Auschwitz buried behind the monument.

In 2009 the current state-of-the-art Museum building opened.
All multimedia is captioned and resources are available for the visually impaired. Docent-led tours are available in four languages (Spanish, Russian, French, and Hebrew).

For me, the highlight is the hologram exhibit, which is computer generated; is changed every month; and is included in the cost of your ticket. You will experience an interactive, 3-D survivor testimony. The schedule right now spotlights Pinchas Gutter till the end of May; Aaron Elster from June 1 - 30; and Renee Firestone from July 1-31. The amazing technology allows members of the audience to hear the survivors' stories and to ask them questions. (Pinchas Gutter will sing a song for you.) The last time I was there the volunteer docent rephrased some of the questions in order to include the correct trigger words.

Museum admission is free on the last Friday of every month in 2022.

See my earlier review (August 20, 2022) for more details.

Great museum. Actually thought we wouldn't be there long, didn't think there would be much to see. Boy, was I wrong. Allow a good 3 hrs when you go.
