Visited here in August 2021. This has to be one of the most impressive and largest railroad museums in the country and well worth a daylong visit. I spent most of the day there seeing barn after barn of equipment and numerous exhibits. Enjoyed it thoroughly

Two visits in 2021 have led me to improve my rating. This is because of riding the "re-created" interurban line. First in a restored former North Shore interurban car and on my second visit in a restored former CA&E car. The restorations are impeccable. As would be expected for what started out as an electric/street railway museum. There's still far too many exhibits awaiting restoration. Some may get to the point of being unrestorable if allowed to further deteriorate. Whereas all rail museums face the ravages of damage by vandals, IRM has done their own to many of the steam locomotives on display by removing much of the connecting rods on the clocomotives. The "reason" is to enable realocation. My question is, how many have been relocated? And, how often? Do the rods still exist? Or, have they been scrapped as so many steamers were? While a few steam locomotives have been restored to operation, what has happened to most of the others is a tragedy. I suggest viewing the attached pix to prepare yourself for what you'll see.
There is also a second trolley line in occasional operation. It's useful for transportation around the museum complex. Use it. It'll save on walking!
As for food, be prepared to bring your own. When I visited in August and October 2021, the snack bae was closed. There are numerous picnic tables around. Use them!
Still I recommend at least one visit to this museum. I say that because it's unlikely you'll be able to see all of it in one day. Allow two days minimum!

We’d never been to this museum, so although we are not Sheldon Cooper/Big Bang Theory, and have an obsession for trains, we wanted to visit. Very empty on a Thursday morning. We went to buy tickets and probably didn’t need them, as we were unable to ride a train. We were told they run every 30 minutes, and although it was 10:58 and probably wouldn’t make it to the 11:00 train, the next one wouldn’t run until 12:15! Huh?
We wandered in and out of each one of the buildings and enjoyed the walk. The diner was not open on weekdays due to a staffing shortage. We had actually planned to grab a bite but that didn’t happen either. They’re building some new stores and adding on. No one was around to answer any questions. So, basically we donated our admission to the museum. Disappointing.

I've been to a few different railroad museums over the years, including the National Transportation Museum in St. Louis, the Galesburg, IL and Elkhart, IN museums and even the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. This museum blows them all away.
There is building after building of train cars and locomotives. The mail Steam Engine building was very cool. They offer different types of rides, a good giftshop, plenty of cars you can walk through, and an extensive outdoor display area. The only downer was the constant rain/drizzle the day I was there and the fact that I didn't have time for a ride on a train since I had about 3 hours before I had to head to my next location.
It was really cool and I highly recommend if trains are of interest.

The museum's trains come alive on weekends. On weekdays there's more than enough static displayed locomotives, rolling stock and railroad memorabilia to keep any rail fan happy, but on weekends the trains actually run. I saw two operating steam locomotives, several interurbans and two trolley cars, all available for rides with no additional charge beyond the museum's admission price.
Unfortunately, Covid's effects are still being felt to some degree. Visitors are asked to wear masks inside buildings and train cars, and the diner is closed due to lack of staff, so bring lunch and use one of the many picnic tables on the grounds.

The IRM is a railfan must-see but even non fans will enjoy the museum's excellent and very extensive collections. It specializes in Midwest interurbans since the area had many such services, but there are plenty of fine examples of steam, diesel and electric railroad equipment too. Many are rare or unique. You can ride a beautifully restored interurban car on their extensive trackage and on summer weekends they run steam and diesel trains. Wear comfy shoes; it's huge.

My grandsons ages 14 and 13 loved the museum. It wasn't just looking at trains, but touring them and actually riding in them. Wonderful experience!

Very comprehensive collection from dining car plates and cutlery to street cars, to busses to massive Baldwin steam locos. I've visited many rail museums around the world and this is up there with the best. The staff were informative and happy to chat a while. On a Saturday there was steam up plus caboose rides. The only thing that saddened me is how much of the stock is in a poor condition and will never run again. But it's all privately funded and they do what they can.

This place is amazing. The amount and variety of locomotives and railcars is great. There is an historic depot that was moved there that has a lot railroad memorabilia. I was amazed at the amount of track they have. It is not just rail equipment sitting still, not just an excursion train. They have it all. A great place for anyone who is interested in railroad at all.

Do they ever start the diesel locomotives for customers to hear?

There really are that many on the property. It is definitely bigger in scale than other museums. However, probably only a quarter to a third of them are operable, and on any given day only one or two are operating. If you're after as many operating diesels as possible, look on the calendar for Diesel Days, usually sometime in August. They operate MANY units that weekend - in 2017 they ran about a dozen ranging from a 45-tonner to a B40-8 and the Nebraska Zephyr.
Does it have any ride during weekdays?

The Electric trains run during the week. If you visit the website it has detailed information including which specific trains will be operating each day.

Now, am I to understand that the trolley that runs around the perimeter of the buildings and the "Trolley Bus" rides that the website lists in the schedule, mostly on select Saturdays, are two separate things? Or does the perimeter trolley only run on weekends? We will be going on a weekday in June.

Buenos dias. En Ingles: I am very sorry for the delay. I was not aware of this Q & A capability in Trip Advisor.
Unfortunately, the only public transportation from Chicago is taxi service. Uber seems to be the least expensive.
Hello!! My name is Daniel work on the railroad more precisely in the Sarmiento railway Buenos Aires Argentina .. work with locomotives quisas you know GR 12, GT 22, AG8, G12 these are some of the locomotives have a plaque that reads The Grang Ilinois the point is I wanted to know if they had any of these locomotives in the museum and if they could give me a photo and I give them some pictures of these wonderful machines that even today still in service ... from already thank you very much and greetings from Argentina

Hi Daniel, The locomotive models you mentioned were made by the Electro Motive Division of General Motors at the plant in La Grange, Illinois. That plant no longer makes locomotives. The Illinois Railway Museum does have locomotives made at that plant, but none of those models. Those models were made specially to specifications for other countries and were exported to Argentina and other countries.

We live in England and will be visiting Chicago. This seems to be a lovely railway museum to visit. How can we get there by public transport please. There must be a railway connection from which we can take a taxi.
Many thanks, Frances B

Hi, we have been to the Illinois Railway Museum a few times. It is an outdoor museum. It is at least an hour away from downtown Chicago. There is no rail service to the museum. The town is rural. If you don't mind driving, another option would be to drive. This way you can be there as long as long as you want. It is an all day affair from driving to the museum, to learning about the trains and riding the ones in operation (see website for schedules). Also, if you have children they are having an event called "Happy Holiday Railway" December 5th & 6th and December 12th & 13th.
Wishing you a nice trip

Unfortunately there are no direct Public Transportation links available for this museum. You can only reach this museum by car.
However, if you do make the effort to visit, you would be handsomely rewarded with a great experience!
