A Must Stop
A great place to stop in and learn about the history of Lincoln and the area. The lady gave us a tour and it was really nice.

History worth stopping for!!
It was time to take a break from driving, so when I saw the sign for a National Historic Site in Vandalia, we got off the interstate and drove into town. Actually this was one of the few Lincoln sites we had never visited. Although it was too late on this Saturday afternoon for a tour, we still parked the car and walked around the grounds of this awesome historic building, peeked in the windows, checked out all the statues and historic markers on the grounds. Awesome to know about the Madonna of the Plains honoring all the mothers who braved the trip westward in covered wagons. And the historic National Road that ran westward from Cumberland, Maryland and ended in Vandalia.

Great guide

We were traveling with a person who was blind. The guide ( I am ashamed to say, but I forgot her name) was great. Where appropriate, she allowed touching (reproductions, etc). And described things as well.

The young adults enjoyed the tour.
The tour doesn’t take long and as we are all able we went upstairs as well. The admission is by donation.

Walk in Lincoln's footsteps

This is such a nice stop not far off the highway. Especially for a history buff. There is not an entry fee, but donations are requested. We paid $10 for our family.

The lady who greeted us was very welcoming and informative. After telling us a bit about the the site, we were allowed to roam and take our time. While you can't actually walk into the rooms, each is set up in a manner that allows you to see what it must have looked like all those years ago. Upstairs, where the Senate and House of Reps met, the wood plank floors are original. The same ones Lincoln walked on.

The site itself is not very large, so it did not take much time to see everything and take photos. So even if you are just looking for a break from the highway, it won't take long.

Interesting Illinois History

We've passed by the Vandalia exit many times and noted the sign about the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site. This trip, we had time and we finally stopped. It's a nicely restored building, well marked with informative signs. We were fortunate that they were having tours that day, and a well-informed guide tol. us many interesting facts about the history of the Statehouse. Abraham Lincoln served in the Illinois House of Representatives in this building. It is probably most interesting to Illinois residents.

Second Illinois state house visit

We got here and the sign said it was open on Friday but they were gone for lunch. It was a little after 11 so we decided to go across the street to the distillery for lunch. Pretty good burger and fries.

No one had opened the site so we walked around and read all the signs around the building. Then we walked down town and stopped in at the flower shop.

By then the building was open so we gave our donation and listened to the information given and then walked around the building. It didn't take very long but it was interesting to see all the rooms. We climbed up the stairs to the senate and representative rooms and enjoyed walking on the original floors.

We had a nice trip to Vandalia considering there was a lot of construction on I-70 and it took us a lot longer to get here from St Louis than we planned but it was worth the drive.
