A great history lesson for the family

This is a beautiful museum, with a outdoor tank park and a great indoor museum covering from WW1 to the present. You can experience a life like WW1 trench, Normandy Beach on D-day, and other fine exhibits....and it only cost $5 to park! Been there 6-7 times and will go again.

See the cane and the prosthetic leg

My father was a dental surgeon in the 1st Infantry Division in World War II. He served from Normandy to Aachen, earned two bronze stars and was promoted from Lieutenant to Captain to Major. He was proud of his service in The Big Red One and always kept in touch with soldiers who served with him. And he loved to take my brother and me to the 1st Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois. Located at 1S151 Winfield Road, it opened in 1958 as part of the 500-acre former estate of Chicago Tribune publisher Robert R. McCormick. Open from 10 to 4 Tuesday through Sunday, the museum displays nearly 14,000 artifacts, including weapons, helmets, maps, uniforms, flags, canteens and medals. Even the cane used by Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who suffered from arthritis caused by injuries he sustained in World War I, and the prosthetic leg worn by Staff Sergeant Bud Ireland after suffering wounds during a tank battle in Germany in 1945. Among the exhibits are First in War, following the 1st Division from World War I to Vietnam, and Duty First, exploring the history of the U.S. Army's five basic missions--military assistance, counterinsurgency, battle, peacekeeping and deterrence. Stroll through the Tank Park, which displays tanks, jeeps, trucks and a Huey helicopter used from World War I to Desert Storm. Finally, visit the bookstore where you will find books and videos that preserve and promote the history of the 1st Infantry Division.

Well worth the trip

This museum was an unexpected surprise (We stayed in Schamburg and found this highlighted in TripAdvisor). Agree with many of the reviews here. Well done museum with lot's of interesting stories (of those who served) and information about the Big Red 1. As a veteran from recent history, I found the grounds beautiful, the Tank park spectacular, and the museum well worth the visit. The past conflicts section is devoted to WWI, WWII, Kore and the Vietnam conflicts and the integral part played in those by the First Armored Division. The WWI and WWII portions are particularly well done. The Modern conflict part of the museum ties in multiple personal stories from those who have served, touching on several different aspects of how being part of their service have affected them. As a veteran who cares for veterans, I very much appreciated getting into the human side of what it means to serve. Easy to recommend.

Awesome but educational

This museum has an interaction side and a walk though side. I would suggest the walk through side if you do not have time for both. On the interaction side there are VR headsets that take you on an army mission. There are tanks outside are kids can climb on. This activity can take 1-2 hours long.

Interesting and engaging exhibits

We could have definitely stayed longer here - exhibits about the wars and conflicts were interactive and very appealing visually. We enjoyed the "new" section with video interviews of veterans. People of all ages can engage with this museum.

Outstanding Military Museum

By far one of the best military museums I have visited. The tank displays outside the museum were exceptional with equipment from WWI to present day. The museum tour itself was equally great and despite being a military history enthusiast, I learned several new facts and stories that I had not previously been exposed to. Thank you Jessica for sharing the history of the 1st Division.

Cantigny Has More Than Just Tanks

The tanks outside were incredible to get up close to. My husband and son are huge military buffs and were impressed to see the tanks on display outside on the grounds. I myself tagged along but was not bored at all looking at the tanks. Inside the museum are wonderful displays depicting all phases of wars that the 1st was involved in. The grounds had wonderful gardens to wander through. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Military history of the Big Red One

My father was a member of the 28th Infantry Regiment of the First Division of the U.S. Army, the famed Big Red One. He landed at Normandy on D-Day and served through the end of World War II. He kept a daily diary of his adventures. He was proud of his service and always enjoyed a visit to the First Division Museum in Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois. My wife and I always make it a point to visit the grounds whenever we are in the vicinity. Located at 1S151 Winfield Road, off I-88 three miles north on Winfield Road, it is part of the Cantigny Park complex that includes the Robert McCormick house museum and a 27-hole public golf course. Open Wednesday through Sunday for limited time entry from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and from 1:45 p.m. to 5 p.m., the First Division Museum is dedicated to the Big Red One, which Colonel McCormick served in during World War I. It presents a military history of the longest continuously serving division in the U.S. Army in WWI, WW II and Vietnam. There are life-size dioramas and interactive exhibits, including First In War, which covers the divisions service in WW I, WW II and Vietnam and Duty First, which explains training for First Division soldiers for all aspects of battle, counterinsurgency, deterrence, military assistance and peacekeeping. Outside, be sure to visit the Tank Park, which features tanks, trucks, jeeps and artillery from WW I to WW II to Korea to Vietnam to Desert Storm to Desert Shield. Most interesting is the M1917 Light Tank, the first official tank for the U.S. Army, the M24 Chaffee, the M41A3 Walker Bulldog, Pershing, Patton and M1 Abrams. My father, who was a dentist in the medical corps, loved to tell stories about how he and his staff converted a GMC CCKW 2 1/2-ton troop-carrying truck (one is on the grounds at Cantigny) into a dental office to follow the soldiers close to the front line. He earned a bronze star for his service.
