This 104 foot span was constructed in 1876 to bridge Little Raccoon Creek, near Possum Bottom. It was moved in 1972/73 to its current location in the Ernie Pyle rest area on US 36 between Dana and Rockville. It is one of 4 surviving covered bridges in Vermillion County.
There are restrooms here, but they are of the pit variety, and need some work. The bridge itself is in good shape, and open to pedestrians year around.

Ernie Pyle was a famous WWII correspondent who was killed in 1945 on Okinawa by a sniper. There is a small museum in small Dana, IN but we have always stopped at the little rest area on two lane US 36 over the years.
It has green grass, a replica memorial, parking and a covered bridge now placed there for safekeeping. A good place to stretch, walk the dog and consider the horror of WWII and the efforts of the Greatest Generation to keep us all safe and free.
US 36 is a nice two lane drive through real America. Small towns and farms. And this is a nice stop on that road.
