This county museum has a little bit of everything for everyone! Local history as well as some one of a kind items! Stopped in with my Sister and we both agreed that it was well worth the stop! You'll need about an hour - this should be on your list for Franklin!

If you liek small county museums, this one has a nice collection in a highly historic building, ranging from pre-Columbian (small section) to a nice exhibit on Franklin in the 50s. It's free, and the cabin exhibit is also fun. Great for a rainy day. If you want to do historic or geneaological research in Franklin, then head downstairs. Friendly.

We were in Franklin and decided to revisit this interesting little museum housed in the rather imposing former Masonic Temple near the courthouse square.
The main floor houses various permanent and temporary exhibits in a series of rooms. One room combines the fossil past of the area including a display of typical albeat small examples with the story of the Native Americans who called the area home before European settlers arrived and the narrative of those pioneer settlers. There are some interesting artifacts on display, such as the side panel of a Conestoga wagon as well as items from Hendricks family, whose cabin has been relocated to the museum grounds.
Next door is a very nice display on the Civil War unit (Co. F of the 7th Indiana) that was raised locally with more artifacts as well as some overviews of the battles that the 7th fought in, etc. - most interesting here is the large United States flag made by the women of the little hamlet of Hopewell given to the soldiers when they left for war.
Another room offers a look at a Victorian parlor with period furniture and artifacts on display, while yet another looks at local businesses into the 1950s and the construction of Camp Atterbury that strides Franklin, Bartholomew, and Brown Counties. One final gallery houses a temporary exhibit on the ice cream shops that have flourished over the years in the area.
There is also a small gift shop that offers, amongst other things, books by local authors on the history of the county. The building also houses a genealogy library on another floor.
We spent the better part of an hour here learning about the history of Johnson County - best of all it's free!

The Johnson County Museum of History offers a snapshot of the area's past during a variety of periods -- Native American and pioneer, the Civil War, the Victorian era, Camp Atterbury during World War II, and the 1950s. In addition, short-term exhibitions focus on special topics, such as local athletic heroes and area ice cream companies. Outdoors, a log cabin from 1832 offers a realistic look at pioneer life. Finally, in the basement, one of the region's best genealogical libraries is an invaluable aid to family history researchers. And admission is always free!

We come from a large city and decided to check out the museum. There was good history to it and interactive for the children. It is fairly small compared to the museums we have been to but they did have some nice exhibits.

It's small and local and probably not ideal for kids. That aside I enjoyed seeing some cool old artifacts at this converted Masonic Temple. There were some Civil War memorabilia plus an old pharmacy Cabinet and a cool old juke box. Hey, it's free and within walking distance of the downtown area. Stop by Benjamin's for a cup of coffee. There was an inviting diner called Ann's that I may try next time in town. By the way there is street parking outside the museum and I believe there is a small parking lot that was filled at the time I arrived.

If you need to do research for genealogy or regional history, this is the spot. The museum itself is neat and orderly, nice staff, but nothing in the collections to write home about.

Self guided tour of Johnson County history. Kind of basic and nothing too excited to see. Kids may find it a bit boring where adults like the historical facts, etc. Nice free attraction to talk a brief look.
