To be a 5 everything has to be exceptional. In all honesty, if you are not a reader, you are going to be disappointed.

As a reader, it was great. It is small and plan two to two and a half hours

We went with a few friends mostly to see the Eva Kor exhibit. That exhibit was really informative. The hologram of her was beyond interesting. Being able to actually ask her questions was an experience that I'm sure took a lot of technology to make happen. The rest of what we saw was limited- Cole Porter, important books/documents area, and the military area. The architecture of the inside was interesting and they had a gift shop with many things reasonably priced. We spent exactly 2 hours.

Founded in 1830, the Indiana Historical Society is one of the oldest and largest historical societies in the United States. Commonly referred to as "Indiana's Storyteller," it is the oldest state historical society west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is housed in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center at 450 West Ohio Street in Indianapolis, in the Canal and White River State Park Cultural District, adjacent to the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art. The 165,000-square-foot facility was opened in 1999, built on the site of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis. It maintains a research library and is one of the largest archival repositories of material on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. The collection is composed of 1.7 million photographs, 45,000 cataloged printed items, 14,000 pieces of sheet music, 5,450 processed manuscript collections, 3,300 artifacts, 1,700 cataloged maps, 800 broadsides and 129 paintings. More than 70,000 digital images representing 61 collections are currently available through the IHS website. Some of the most interesting and rare items are a 130-year-old Bible used in 2008 to swear in Mayor Greg Ballard of Indianapolis and the original glass-plate negative of an Abraham Lincoln photograph taken by Alexander Gardner just weeks before Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. Subject strengths include notable Hoosiers, architecture, agriculture and the Civil War.

All of the staff were wonderful and so sweet. The museum itself is in a beautiful building. The historical actors were a nice touch and I'm sure are fun for kids. I went during COVID and most of the museum was closed and many elements were changed. My friends and I were only able to visit 4 exhibits and we finished the museum in <1 hour. The free parking with admission was really great. I'm sure this is a 4 star experience without COVID.

Came for the tree festival. Actually didn't know anything about it but we were staying at the Residence Inn across the street and saw that there was a Christmas Tree festival wrapping up that weekend and figured it was worth checking out. Got tickets for the next morning and had a nice experience. Trees are sponsored and created by commercial entities and it is a major fundraiser for the museum. Surprised by the back-in-time actors in various locations. Enjoyed the lovely lady singing Cole Porter tunes to us. Nice location at center of canal walk. Onsite parking lot.

This is a review about the 2020 Festival of Trees. Admission price was affordable for families...under 17 was $5, so yay.

50 trees this year and the theme was “Life Is A Gift”. If you’re just wanting to see pretty trees, then you’ve come to the right place.

I personally was disappointed because I was expecting more of a history lesson education from the trees, since the historical society puts this on.

But nope...while the trees are engaging and eye catching, they are not meant to educate. I was hiking to learn more about Indianapolis through the trees. I totally expected a Lincoln history lesson tree.

Instead, each tree was a commercial for the business that sponsored it. The donut tree, eyeglasses tree, etc. The Right to Life Christmas tree (representing 7,637 abortions) right next to the ALL IN FOR CHRISTMAS tree (representing that they accept alternative lifestyles and BLM political views) is a great example of how far removed from teaching history the trees are. I’m not saying that people don’t need to know about those topics in general, but I certainly didn’t expect the trees that I paid to tour to be used to make personal opinion statements at a historical society building.

Instead, the trees are simply commercials that you pay to view. I wish the trees would have been consistent with the entire purpose of the building-to teach local history.

Otherwise, it was pretty and organized. And we found Buddy the elf.

I love the interactive parts of the museum, that help make learning history more real. I've gone several times to the museum to walk through different rooms they've created, seeing different stories recreated, and acted out. I also love going to the Indiana Historical Society every year around the holidays to see The Festival of Trees, it's become a tradition with my family and some of my friends too.

Be sure to visit the Cole Porter Room, dedicated to the life and legacy of American composer and songwriter who was born in Peru, Indiana. See the Tony Award he won for Kiss Me, Kate, his most famous Broadway show, and listen to a singer perform a variety of Porter's songs, including Night and Day and Begin the Beguine.

We really enjoyed the Christmas trees decorated by various institutions throughout the museum. We also really enjoyed the Madam Walker exhibit. Definitely makes us want to read more about her life and career. Well done!
