I lived in Lafayette about 10 years ago and this Museum was not there then. In going back to visit friends, we decided we had to check this out.

It is a lovely addition to the Lafayette area. We went in the evening for the opening of The Richmond Group: Indiana's First Art Colony. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The Museum has a lot of beautiful pieces not just in paintings but also furniture. It's worth looking at for a couple of hours.

Kudos to those who put this all together.

We look for art museums wherever we travel, and I didn't read much about the Haan Museum before we arrived. What a surprise to learn the fascinating history of the house, furnishings, and art collection! We were greeted by a docent who gave us a wonderful introduction and then we were free to explore. We met up with him in a few different rooms and were able to ask about the history of specific pieces, like the ornate grandfather clock that was hand carved in 1910 from one log found in southern Indiana and determined to be over 4,000 years old. Beautiful paintings and ceramics, and there's a small sculpture garden with a nature trail behind the house. Highly recommended!

Lafayette is not known for its great tourist draws. We know there are more popular spots in Lafayette that have broader appeal to all ages like the Columbian Park Zoo. However, we found the true treasure of Lafayette one Saturday in June. It was a hot day, so a cool attraction suited us well. We had driven up and down this area where the Haan Museum is located many times. We observed the large old homes in the neighborhood. We always thought these homes were beautiful.

We knew the Haan Museum was a place to see in Lafayette but had not invested the effort to go and see it. It does take planning as the window it is open is small. It is open from 1 PM to 3 PM. We arrived around 12:20 PM so we walked through the Haan Sculpture Garden prior to taking the home tour. We reviewed the garden under that listing. It was a pleasant place to wait for the main event.

As the opening time drew near, we walked to the front sidewalk and walked up the long walkway that allowed for full frontal view of the massive columns that frame this old home. The exterior of the home is beautiful and has a grandness from a long past time. We found out after we entered the home that the entryway, we walked through was from a home that was built in the 1700’s that was being torn down at the time that the Connecticut home was being built. That had our minds wondering of all the people that had walked through those doors. This home was the Connecticut representation at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. It was reconstructed for the fair and stood there for approximately a year before being purchased and moved to Lafayette. An interesting fact is that it stood on ground where the St. Louis Zoo now is located. We loved our time at that zoo, so it is funny how the two are somewhat obscurely linked.

The entry fee to the Museum/Home tour is $10 per person. A great date trip for couples without kids. It is filled with art from Indiana artists (except the grand American Indian art that adorns the stairway walls). It is also adorned with period furniture. There is great thought and detail placed into the adornment of this home. The highlights of the Indiana artists preserved here are TC Steele and William Forsyth. There are many other artists represented here as well but those stood out to us.

The docents were very informative and friendly. We enjoyed all the details and the time they spent with us. The home is a self-guided tour, but they are happy to tell you many facts about the home and the artists represented. They are especially informative about the history of the home and many of the grand furnishings that are there.

For us this was a very worthwhile couple hours of wandering and soaking up the home and its art. This is a treasure that does not get the recognition it is due. We are grateful to the Haan’s for preserving the home and its artwork.

We hesitate to mention this as it almost detracts from our home and museum review, but there is also a walking path through the woods behind the sculpture garden for bikers and hikers alike. It is not one of the best hikes you will have but it is nice to have the opportunity to hike in the middle of the city. We did not hike it the day we went to the museum, but we did come back on a weeknight for a little exercise. We were staying close to the home for a month, so we fully immersed ourselves in all the property had to offer.

My wife and I went to their special evening Christmas tour. It was our first visit there, but we will definitely be back again. Wonderful art, Christmas trees in every room, beautifully decorated for Christmas. They had several working model trains, complete with Lafayette buildings and winter scenes. We were given a personal tour by Bob Haan, who told us many great stories how he and Ellie renovated the home. Exquisite one of a kind furniture pieces. You have to see it to appreciate it. A great treasure in our home town with a world class history!

Thank you. Your visit must have been for Christmas Glow, where we turned off all the lights except for decorations and LED candles. I hope that you'll return for a full tour, and hear more stories about the Museum and its contents. The Museum has only had regular tours and special exhibitions for three years. A new Retro Clay exhibit just opened, and you might want to check it out.

Thank you, Jack. We started as a Museum because of the wonderful Indiana paintings, but the furniture is also a highlight now - especially the clocks, Wooton desk and music boxes. Some people come because of the architecture, some for the paintings, some for the furniture, and some for the ceramics. Based on the timing, I assume that you came for Christmas. We hope that you'll visit again soon.

Was traveling with some friends and we had a half day we wanted to fill. We found this just by searching for Museums close by and it looked interesting. It was much better than even anticipated. We spent a solids two hours between the sculpture garden and the tour of the house and art work. Plenty to see and justifies multiple visits.

We're glad that it exceeded your expectations. It's a bit cold for the sculpture garden now, but it's looking cheerier by the day as we get ready for Christmas tours. Christmas is a great time to bring the family - everyone loves the trains.

I got a chance to visit the museum last week and had the most amazing time. We had the privilege of having Bob Haan give us the tour, and his storytelling and attention to detail was simply astounding. The 2+ hour tour hardly felt like that long. It's amazing the amount of great artists that have called Indiana home, and this collection is fantastic.

I would highly recommend anyone in the area, either visiting or longtime residents.

Thank you, Brian. It's always nice to hear how much people enjoy the Museum. We try to customize tours to each person's interests, and you must have been very engaged if your tour took 2 hours. We're decorating for Christmas now, and that's a great time to visit.

This museum is literally down the street from us. It is packed full of lovely bits of art, antiques, and curios. I went there just before going to Paris, and this museum rivaled those quaint little French museum. I also visited this museum after Thanksgiving 2018 with family. We had a blast trying to find ALL the nativity scenes in every room. And the trees and decorations where breathtaking. Well worth the price of admission

Thank you for the nice review, Frances. We're glad that you liked it. We're getting ready to decorate for Christmas, and we hope that you'll visit again. As nice as the Museum is at other times, there's something special about Christmas (thanks to some wonderful volunteers).

On a five-star scale, I'd give this museum a 7. Seriously. My mind is still going wow, wow, wow five hours later.

I had high expectations -- this had been recommended by friends who are museum professionals, art historians, etc. So being blown away on several levels was not at all expected, given the advance notice.

If you like even one of the following, you should go, because there is enough in each category to sustain you:
Great art in general
Ceramic art from Indiana
Indiana painters, from about 1860 to 1950, with a very strong collection of T.C. Steele.
Custom furniture, especially from the 1870-1890 period.
Custom modern furniture made of ceramic
Old houses -- this is a 1904 house with a very unique history, and some much older features. It still could function as a liveable house. It is large, yet doesn't overwhelm, so you could picture living in it.
If you are into the Arts & Crafts movement (turn of the century), this is sort of the epitome of design meets function. There is almost nothing in the house that doesn't feel aesthetically pleasing, that just seems blah or neutral.
Tour guides who can link together all kinds of historical strands.

My tour was given by the wonderful Sally Carter. And I also had the pleasure of listening in on a few minutes of Bob Haan's tour.

This place is unique, to put it mildly, but it does have a loose comp, in terms of quality and type of museum. That would be the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati. It's a huge private collection assembled by people who really knew what they're doing. Displayed in a historic home in ways that both enhances the art and the house.

It doesn't have the Taft's staff, endowment, extra facilities, etc., or a big city to help support it. But it's an equal feast for the eyes, maybe even better for my eyes and soul. And for me the Haan is even better at telling art history. It's more personal.

If somehow you've received the impression Indiana hasn't had many outstanding artists, this museum will blow you away in that sense. I'm unfamiliar with most of the ceramic artists displayed, but clearly our state has had an abundance of potters who can move us with their work. I will try to attach a few photos later -- not very good ones, as I rarely use a camera. We were allowed to photograph pottery and furniture. (This museum does not allow photos of paintings, to protect from unscrupulous copyists who look online for famous art.)

I've given a lot of museum tours at another historic house that features an artist. Based on my experience there, I'd say this will work very well for children over nine who like art museums. If you've taken your children to the IMA, and that didn't work all that well in the galleries aimed at adults, this might fall into the same boat. If your children like art museums, this may become their favorite. The art really lives in this setting. Some of the ceramics are big and bold, like five feet tall.

I'm told that at Christmas season (Friday after Thanksgiving to New Year's), the house is decorated to the gills with things children can touch. So that might be the time to visit the Haan as a family if your family gets bored in art museums.

I will be back. Bringing friends. There is no way the eyes and mind can absorb what this museum has in three hours.

Best part about this long review is I've left so much untold. Interesting surprises and twists await you.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Most people are pretty surprised when they see inside. Some people love the paintings, some are enchanted by the quirky ceramics, some focus on the furniture, and others concentrate on the architecture - but most people like the variety. It was decorated as our home, so it's not a typical museum. Christmas is our favorite season, and it's a great time to bring the family. Everyone loves the trains, and the bonus is that the buildings are replicas of historic landmarks from England and the US. Kids can play in a gingerbread house or ride on a (stationary) sleigh behind two reindeer. There are trees, lights and garland everywhere, along with animated decorations that the kids can activate. We can even arrange a special tour for families or groups. We look forward to seeing you again soon, along with your friends - the more, the merrier!
