A clear jewel from our past! What a great place to visit! I recommend stopping by when you're in the area. They are working magic on new restorations and are always pleased to show folks around.

This building is a testimony of a time come and gone, along with people who were "ahead of their time," but still resonates with things that remain important to our society, even today: things like equality, education, etc! Check it out on Facebook!

really no way to "review" this place...we were driving between Commiskey and Madison and passed it and so stopped to take it in and get some pics but no way to go inside or anything like that. It was actually back in Nov 2014 but didn't have that option in this review

This site was beautiful, absolutely full of historical value. The indoors area is in mid-remodeling stage, but accommodated family and friends for an elegant wedding. Even in the rain, it captured the roots of American History.

We stopped by Eleutherian College and Hoyt house on a recent visit to Madison. Although no one was around to explain the site fully, the buildings are very imposing and atmospheric. Significant to both the history of the underground railroad and the education of African Americans and women, I hope that the community and/or nearby Hanover College can develop the two as historic sites. As of now they are both good photography stops, but they could be much more.

This building is pre civil war. Was build to educate women and Afro-Americans. Someone is trying to restore this building. But when we go by there doesn't seem as much is going on. The Lyman Hoyt house is right beside the property. Hoyt moved here in 1834 and was very involved with the under ground railroad. You can almost picture in your mind how it much have been in that era. The house is really bad inside, with little being done to keep it or restore it. They say there are tours but no one around. Hope someone helps save this unique site.

I love visiting this place. You can almost "feel" the history when approaching the college. The only bad part is you never know if anyone will be there for a tour and it's a disservice to the college to not have someone there on a regular basis to give tours of the building.
