This is the longest existing covered bridge in the U.S. The bridge sits in an inviting location over the east fork of the White River where it crosses SR 235 about 2.5 miles from the village of Vallonia. It sits in a small park that is easily accessed from 235.
For "roadie" fans, remnants of the old alignment of U.S. 50 can be seen at each edge of the bridge. It's a great photo opportunity.
While you are in the area, one of the few remaining Indiana round barns is about a mile or so east of the bridge. Look for county road 460 heading south. The barn is about 1/4 mile down that road.

Remember the popular 1995 movie "The Bridges of Madison County" starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep that was based on the best-selling 1992 novel of the same name by Robert James Waller and filmed in Iowa? Well, there are only nine authentic covered bridges in Iowa. Indiana has 98 covered bridges, more than any other state except Pennsylvania. Thirty-one of them are located in Parke County, 60 miles west of Indianapolis, more than any other county in the United States, earning it the title of "Covered Bridge Capital of the World." Elsewhere in Indiana is the Indiana Covered Bridge Trail, a 216-mile self-guided driving route that features nine covered bridges in six counties, the Ultimate Hoosier History Lovers Pilgrimage. Five of the most significant bridges on the trail are Medora, Williams, Westport, Ramp Creek and Bean Blossom. Medora, located in Carr Township in Jackson County, crosses the East Fork of the White River and runs parallel to Indiana State Road 235, one mile east of Medora and nine miles southwest of Brownstown. It is the longest covered bridge in the United States at 431 feet, 10 inches. The roof length of 461 feet and the siding at the floor length of 459 feet also are the longest covered bridge measurements in the country. Built in 1875, Medora carried U.S. Route 50 traffic until 1935 when the route was officially moved four miles to the north. In 1968, the bridge was scheduled for demolition when the new modern parallel bridge was to be opened. But it was saved by a governor's order. In 1973, Medora was closed to vehicular traffic. In 2007, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is open for pedestrian traffic only.

This is a very nice covered bridge in the middle of nowhere. There's no charge to see it. There's a brown sign off Hwy 135 & it's just 4 or 5 miles down the road. Go past the first parking area & a much larger parking lot is on the other side. There's some information boards also.
It's supposed to be the longest covered bridge in the nation, but I Googled it & a bridge in New Hampshire has that honor. This IS a very long bridge & definitely worth seeing if you like covered bridges.

This is a place that means a lot to me.....My Grandpa discovered this bridge in 1946 and I was taken to it in the late 1960s when me and Grandma and Grandpa went on picnics there....They are gone but I still go there 2 or 3 times a year because of the good memories of years ago.....

Stop and see this bridge. We had a volunteer there tell us about the bridge. Very informative. Glad we stopped.

We made a detour to this bridge as we spotted it on the map. Glad we did. very nice place to stop and take a travel break. There was a pick nick table and easy access to the river. peaceful spot. The bridge is amazing to see and walk on. if you are a fan of cover bridges put this one on your list. if you are traveling the area and looking for a nice place to get off the road plan a stop.

Beautiful covered bridge. It is closed to traffic but you can walk across it. It was flooded west of bridge when we were there.

Northing part of ohio has thw longest covered bridge at 613ft.

Love to see covered bridges. This bridge is Indiana's longest covered bridge. It is not in working order as you cannot drive across it but you can walk across it no problem.

Stopped Nov 4 2017; there's a small parking area for 3 or 4 cars on the east side where we parked; the other side of the river has a public boat ramp with larger parking area. From the east side the covered bridge is accessible with a stroller and wheelchair, if you can get up the incline which isn't too severe. The floor of the bridge is wooden planks and may be a little bumpy; bicycles would be fun too. You can't really see much from inside the bridge other than looking through the cracks in the floor and the spaces along the bottom edge down to the water. The bridge is well maintained with a lot of the original timbers; some graffiti and a no smoking policy. Just takes a few minutes to stop and enjoy!
