A scenic commentary was provided in all public areas of the ship. Cape Horn marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage, the body of water between South America's Cape Horn: the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and extends into the Southern Ocean. Cape Horn is half-way between Australia and England. The passage, named after the English explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake, is considered one of the most treacherous voyages for ships to make. Its strong winds, large waves, and currents caused many sailors get lost, delayed, and perished in these waters. There is a monument that sits atop Cape Horn. It is a large silhouette of an Albatross in honor of the sailors who died while attempting to go around Cape Horn. The Chilean navy has a permanent lighthouse on the island (with a resident lighthouse keeper), as well as a small Chapel.
From a distance (unless you had a large lens), we saw the lightkeeper's house and the memorial to lost sailors. We learned in this area there are some 800 ships lying beneath these waters which drop from some 300 feet to thousands of feet in just a short distance. In 1905, about 130 ships attempted the transition from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and some 50 were unaccounted for. It was the record year for such tragedies.

This is a review for a real landing on the Cape Horn island from an expedition ship in a zodiac: walking up the stairs, going to the lighthouse, and then to the monument.
Please note that there are no glaciers at Cape Horn so all those photos are irrelevant…
Actually, landing on a beautiful day is an interesting and symbolic experience after having heard so much about this place.
Note that only expedition ships with zodiacs will let you get ashore and visit the Cape. For example, check out the Australis ships that go between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia, and include a stop at Cape Horn if the weather permits.

Arrived at 6am at Cape Horn while on an Antarctic cruise. Stunning scenery
This is where Atlantic ocean meets Pacific Ocean.
Beautiful day. We were privileged to be just 0.5 mls offshore.
Noted monument to lost sailors throughout the years.
Presently inhabited by a family of 4 with cat at lighthouse.
This is a bucket list experience to see what you have only heard about previously
Feeling thankful

Speechless and proud to have sailed around Cape Horn. The seas were kind, although increased wind speed and freezing rain appeared on cue as we watched the lighthouse come into view. A family with young children were the current guardians in the house alongside. There was also a flagpole. The flag had been ripped off during recent, winter gales! Cliffs, wind chill, seas buffeting the camera wielding travellers. Exhilarating. Stirring. Historic. Calmer on the other side, as we headed for the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan. Storybook names now storybook adventures.

The Cape was amazing as we cruised around it in smooth waters. We could stand on our balcony to enjoy being at the end of the world. This was a sight to behold and embrace. A magnificent moment in our Patagonia adventure. Bravo to our Captain for this experience

A long awaited and incredible experience. We arrived via the ship Ventus Australis not knowing for sure that we would be able to make landing and take the walk up to the monument and visit the lighthouse. Fortune smiled on us. When we arrived the waters were calm, there was nothing but a light and chilly breeze and a beautiful blue sky with low sun and few clouds when we made land by zodiac. We were able to visit the monument, the lighthouse and small historic church before the darker clouds gathered and it began to rain.
On leaving the zodiac we has a steep climb up steps to the top of the island where we followed the boardwalks to avoid damage to the environment and Parque National Cabo De Hornos. The walk was so peaceful.
The low sun cast a relatively long shadow. The island is inhabited by one family who spend a year insitu. Their home, the building attached to the lighthouse looks relatively modern compared to the small and very old church next to it. It is clearly a bleak setting and feels like the edge of the world with Antarctica a relatively short distance away.
We hadn’t expected to be able to go in the lighthouse but we did and we’re able to climb the stairs to get a great view.
Fortunately for us the weather enabled enough time for us to enjoy our time on Cape Horn.
Just setting foot on Cape Horn felt surreal in so many ways, it seemed like a major achievement given the many stories of bad weather and harsh conditions. There was a clear sense of experiencing something unique and very special. It felt like a privilege.

Over the years those few who have been lucky enough to visit Cape Horn have told stories of how treacherous visiting the Cape could be. Those lost over the ages have rightly been commemorated. Walking onto deck the morning of our visit I was met with howling winds and a cloudy sky - one could not have imagined a more theatrical scene, it could not have been more memorable.
As we approached the lighthouse the winds turned aft so we had a clear and uninterrupted view. To he honest I thought too much had been made of the lighthouse as the landscape, the rugged mountains with cliffs falling vertical into the ocean and islands that seemed to compete for own attention was far more inspiring. The end of the world certainly had a landscape worthy of the name.
Years have passed since we visited The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, in a hire car, in the sunshine. This time was so dramatic and so wonderful words fail me.
Bring decent outdoor clothing, those affordable knock-offs will be embarrassed here; a camera with optical zoom and a hat - baseball caps are likely to be lost forever. The memories of your visit will be eternal.

To be at the bottom of the world was an all time high, one off the bucket list, definitely a once in a life time experience.

Cruising from Lima to Buenos Aries mid Nov to mid Dec...what kind of clothes should we pack
撰写日期:2022年10月18日
On the Stella Australis what do we wear for dinner? Is there any occasion on board requiring us to pack some smarter evening clothes?

HI. Just finished 4 nights on the cruise, it’s fabulous. Landed at Cape Horn. The guides are brilliant- watch out for the Austrian guy with a great sense of humour and say hello!
There is a Captains dinner but no effort made to dress up although my wife wore a dress as was sick of outdoor and casual clothes! Wine is excellent but if you want something better just ask your waiter but he might want a tip at the end! Brilliant experience.

We are planning on this trip in February, 2020. I get sea sickness at times. I’m frightened by the reports of rough seas. What has been other people’s experiences? should I cancel this trip?

When cruising around the horn do you want to be in a cabin on the land side or the ocean side
撰写日期:2019年8月22日
YES!
Can be rough any time, however can be calm, any time.
Can not predict weather, wind and sea conditions. There may be a season/month when it is not so rough, not sure where you find out this info. I have been there three times now and each time was calm, and was told each time it was unusual to be calm. Count on it being rough, and if calm a bonus.

ciao...andro' un mese in argentina per un viaggio in solitaria...mi puoi dire come posso raggiungere capo horn da usuhaia e quanto costa all'incirca?grazie

Cape Horn is far enough and remote enough that it is difficult to get there on a "day trip". However there are several adventure cruise companies that work in the Tierra del Fuego area that go there on 4-5 day cruises. They will get you to see Cape Horn and stop if the weather permits. Check past Forum entries for Ushuaia/Punta Arenas, or do a quick web search to find details.

I would like to find a cruise that goes AROUND Cape Horn, on the outside, from East TO West.

Star Princess sails out of Buenos Aires, rounds the Cape and ends— two weeks later, in the port that serves Valparaiso, Chile. Then, it makes a return trip.
