Having looked at all the reviews about the Mardakan Fortress, we were very glad to see grandfather Vidadi in good health! This amazingly kind, intelligent man, the keeper of this fortress, told and showed everything! Long summer!

Very beautiful building in excellent state of conservation and above all very well maintained. It’s a shame we couldn’t find the guard to open the door for us. It’s worth the trip because it’s impressive.

Mardakan Castle still remembers the Tatar-Mongol invasion. A wonderful example of medieval architecture and fortification!

On August 14, 2023, during a tour of the Absheron Peninsula, we stopped at the Mardakan Castle. The impressions from visiting this castle were only positive. The castle, despite its rather advanced age, was quite well preserved, but my son and I were especially impressed by the conversation with the castle keeper, an elderly man who called himself Valera. He is a true expert in his field, loving the history of his country and the castle in particular. He told me a lot of interesting things about the castle. But, most importantly, in our difficult times, he believes that among every nation, 95% are adequate people who can change our world for the better. Good health and long life to this man...

The old "Great Mardakan Fortress" is a quadrangular defensive castle, built by Shirvanshah Akhsitan I, in the 12th century, as one of the watchtowers placed over the Absheron Peninsula. It consists of a tower (22 mts high), high walls and a courtyard, with 108 empty wells for storing food and a 25 mts deep water well. The outer walls have been restored, but inner conditions are quite precarious and even dangerous for visitors. Watch carefully your steps at all times and climbing the narrow staircase is absolutely not recommended. The distance between Baku and Mardakan is about 32 kms and you should think twice before going. As a matter of fact, there is not much to see. Strolling along Baku's "Icherisheher" and its carpet shops, or at the impressive "Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center", and even an afternoon at the awesome "Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum", could be much more interesting. At your own risk. Anyway, enjoy!

Средневековая цитадель. Выдержала натиск монголо-татаров. Обязательное место для экскурсий в поселке Мардакан. Рядом примыкает шахская мечеть. Директор крепости Видади, один из тех людей, который на своем месте. Он смотритель крепости около 40 лет.

Historical Azerbaijan site. located in Absheron region. inside the castle there are 3-4 museums are there. entrance fee for castle is 4manat.

We felt it was worth the trip out from Baku to experience this site.
The fortress, whilst still in some original state does require some reconstruction.
We took the opportunity to climb to the top which is 5 tiers (76 steps) above ground level. Not an easy ascent, dark and short, narrow steps.
However, the view from the top was excellent.
At ground level, the empty wells were still evident - used to store food and water.
Two local residents appeared whilst we were there. One, we think was the caretaker and the other gentleman opened his souvenir shop, indicating that the wooden replicas of the fortress were crafted by him.
As always, this is one of those unexpected but memorable moments.Lovely people, appreciative of our visit - we just had to buy a souvenir!!!
We also visited the nearby Mosque - small, but interesting.
Not a "must see" site, but for us, a nice introduction to Azerbaijan.

Этот старый замок найти не так просто. Протиснуться на машине по узким улочкам достаточно трудно, о чем свидетельствуют многочисленные следы на углах))) Но увидеть эту башню и послушать Видади (смотрителя этого исторического наследия) просто необходимо. Видади (или как он себя называет "Валера" - бывший советский научный сотрудник, человек старой закалки, с уважением и любовью относящийся ко всей истории. Бывший десантник, в его словах до сих пор чувствуется объединяющая братская любовь к братским народам бывшего Союза. Не все можно разобрать из того , что он рассказывает (в силу возраста), но то, с каким энтузиазмом и чувством юмора он это делает, вызывает восхищение и желание снова сюда вернуться. Многие из экспонатов, которые он нашел при раскопках, переданы в другие музеи Азербайджана. Сама башня достаточно древняя. На нее можно подняться, но делать это надо крайне аккуратно! Узкая витая лестница с высокими ступенями и низкими потолками - для моего высокого роста это было серьезным испытанием. Но зато сверху открывается прекрасный вид!

В целом в Мардакяне мало мест для туристов, но этот замок с великой историей, мы были в субботу и если бы не знания ребят, которые пришли чуть раньше нас, мы бы не смогли зайти, тк постоянно он открыт только в будни, но и выходные можно попасть, если зайти в домик его управляющего - мирового дедушки и попросить показать замок, он же может и повести экскурсию, рассказать, что и как устроено!
Стоимость 2 маната человек.
Можно погулять по самой крыше замка и по его стенам.
В целом было интересно, но конечно не стоит ожидать чего-то эдакого.
