Nice Small Exhibits

This is a little museum that carries a punch. It is a good place to expose children to our western expansion history. Nicely done.

Small but very well done, this place was a treat. Through light-up maps, rare old photos and excerpts from personal diaries, the stories of the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, and Lewis and Clark trail are told.

Go prepared to read. They break the stories into bite-size pieces but you still have to read.

I found it all fascinating. Loved it!

Spending time at the museum
2019年6月 • 好友
I liked some of the things in the museum and the presentation and that they had to offer. But the service was not good and because they did not tell us anything and they had a remote that does not work and with no A/C and with 3 fans and that is not good and for the people who come and visit.

Good display

They have created an unique display of all the western trails of early America. They also have an unique movie.

I have been visiting around the State to see all of the attractions (have 3 left) on the State Historic Sites Passport (can be obtained from the State Historical Society of Iowa or at any of the sites (free) We all had a great visit on Saturday viewing the Center. I enjoyed all the detailed maps (INTERACTIVE buttons to push for information) of the settlers to the State. The Oregon Trail and Donner Pass the then and now maps. The exhibits artwork and rock sculpture displayed were enjoyed by me and my family. We took many photos here. The facility has very great accommodations for all individuals and this is kept very clean and handicap accessible. Learned there are weekly events occurring here there was a Karaoke event taking place the afternoon we visited. You may do so at your leisure depending on your interests (we were here well over an hour did not tour the outside grounds). I learned on this visit about the Lewis and Clark Pups Seaman, a Newfoundland dog owned by Meriwether Lewis, accompanied the Lewis & Clark expedition. Very helpful individual (at counter where I got my passport stamped) who was able to answer my questions. This is a free will donation.

Good displays and models to see here. Parking and entrance are free.

Council Bluffs was a common (or starting) point for California trail, Oregon trail, Mormon trail and it also intersects with the Lewis and Clark path. That makes this a logical place for a Historic Trails Center. The two people working here were not very helpful, but the exhibits are worth seeing for the history background (they might not be so interesting for kids).

Happy trails to you!
It's worth the confusing trails to their doors. Anyone who pioneer stories and what happens next will have a lot of fun. Be sure to go on Thursday afternoons for some old time music.

Council Bluffs? Yes, take a day to investigate a great town!
Western Historic Trails was just one of 5 please to see the beginning of the west grow. When you ask TripAdvisor about this town, it grows into a period timeline of how it was the biggest city of the two (Omaha) to the most caring city along the river. Definitely a must see when near these border towns.

small but nice

went there on a Thursday in the late afternoon and thought I was at the wrong place because just behind the entrance where about 15 people sitting in a circle playing instruments - mostly guitars and singing.....:-)
But somebody from the Center told me that every Thursday local people are meeting there for jam sessions and of course I can see the exhbitions - which where informative- accompanied by real good country music.... very nice!

An important Museum currently underfunded
2017年8月 • 夫妻情侣
An excellent and ambitious museum covering all the Overland Trails that were associated with Council Bluffs including the Lewis and Clark, Mormon, California and Oregon Trails as well as the Pony Express.
It also has extensive grounds (over 400 acres) through which it is possible to hike down to the Missouri River. There are also Mountain Biking Trails.
Not surprisingly, the Mormon Trail is better covered than is the Oregon Trail. For example, in the detailed panels the O.T skips from Soda Springs all the way to the Dalles, thereby bypassing some of the most difficult parts of the journey such as the Snake Canyon, Massacre Rocks, Three Island Crossing, the Blue Mountains. It means as well that Fort Hall is not covered, although separate photos elsewhere in the museum do show Shoshone and Twin Falls as well as Fort Hall.
All that said - this is a wonderful museum explaining the important role of Council Bluffs in westward expansion. It suffers from lack of maintenance and updating. The state of Iowa should more fully support this treasure.
