Visiting the Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail and Museum

Good trip. We arrived at approximately 2 pm and made our way towards the entrance of the museum. After paying the admission fee, we received a booklet that provided information on the various rooms inside the museum and what they were used for. There were informational plaques located in various rooms, along with old newspaper articles and fun facts about what occurred in the jail while it was in use. There were multiple cells open to the public, so that one could see how small the spaces really were. We also got to learn about how the bathroom/showers were set up, along with touring the living quarters of the Jailer and his family. The first three floors consisted of cells, while the forth floor consisted of the Jailers apartment. After touring all four floors, we made our way back down, where there was a gift shop located on the ground floor.

Tip: I recommend spending an hour here if you truly want to see everything.

Interesting unique jail

Interesting jail design. First one like it we've seen. Lots of displays and info on how the jail worked and the design of it. Was pretty harsh on all who were here it seems. Solitary confinement, even if only for hours was brutal. Only negative is seems a bit expensive and web site does not have updated, higher prices. A few $$ less would have made this a good deal. Still worth visiting as it's pretty unique.

Disappointed that it was closed on Wednesdays...we really wanted to tour it but we could only view the exterior. Seems like everyone has great reviews of the museum....

Fascinating structure, ultimately cruel but definitely worth visiting.

Fascinating but cruel. Make the effort to see this as it’s so unusual. A 3-storey high rotary jail, one of only three…where prisoners were kept in rotating cells, 2 per tiny room. Built 1885, cells are located around a central carousel which at the turn of a hand-crank, would spin so that only one inmate’s holding area could be accessed at a time via the single entryway. No longer turns due to obvious safety concerns. Allegedly prisoners would stick out an arm whilst it was rotating to get their limb broken so they’d be admitted to the on-site hospital room where there were more possibilities for escape. The most violent criminals were kept in the third storey where the prison warden and his wife also had an apartment. By the 1960s, the massive metal turntable would frequently become stuck. The jail was in active use until 1969. I can’t believe they let this operate right up to that time.

Trip to Fargo, ND

What a great tour. It is so unusual and interesting. Be sure to book on line early as they only let a couple of people in per hour. It was so cool. I had seen it on Ghost Adventures and was very glad I searched it out to visit. Don't miss this!

Must see attraction

Found this place while road tripping with my kids, wasn't too excited about going but was extremely happy that we did , interesting place and a great way to spend a couple of hours, highly recommended

Incredibly interesting

Wow! I was kind of scared when I went it but later on I saw everything and how well done this jail was and the history behind it. They have some original items and its so interesting to see all this and how it was back in the day! Very nice to come and visit all 4 floors! Yes 4! It is the biggest one from other 2 which the nice lady told me about and I forgot but this is the biggest one by far. Very interesting mechanism to rotate the jail cells around.

Fascinating

Really interesting piece of history across the river from Omaha! So glad we went there on a whim today (they are open on Sundays). Difficult to photograph to convey the interesting design of jail. Well worth the visit
