Beautiful garden with a great history. Great place for a peaceful walk in the city. Great detour if traveling through Des Moines.

This was one of my favorite stops on my Iowa trip! While these gardens need some upkeep, the walk around the gardens was really nice. I started the walk by the Pavilion and followed the trail around to the other structures. One of the structures that I really liked was the Character Garden which had large boulders in a circle-formation (each boulder standing for responsibility, citizenship, fairness, respect, caring, and trustworthiness).
Parking is hard to find and there was some construction going on when I went but the garden is very peaceful and definitely worth a visit!

I loved the Pavillion it is amazing! I loved the Chinese Zodiac and i loved that this was located right by the water and the Womens Empowerment Bridge.It was very calming.I wish that the place was cleaner.There was graffiti,trash scattered and there were parts that reeked of urine.It was a definite must see,wish i would of seen it at night, i bet it would be even more beautiful.

The structure itself is impressive but the upkeep of this site is pretty poor. I wish I could have seen it when it was brand new. If a master gardener or gardening club would adopt this garden, they could really make a difference by simply pulling some weeds. I’m surprised that the City of Des Moines is neglecting this unique area.

I checked out the garden during my morning run. It's really small and it doesn't take more than 15 minutes to check it out. I don't think it's worth a detour, but it was along my route and it sort of cheered my up as it was such a contrast to the surrounding area.

Everywhere we looked, the Asian Gardens were in need of help. The gardens were overgrown with weeds and brush. The ponds some were dried out and others were filled. Either way they all needed cleaning as does the garden's iconic Asian building. The accent hardscapes were either broken and/or non-functioning.

This is just down from the botanical gardens and along the river walk. not a lot to do or see but the building is neat and the statues are interesting, but nothing great.
